For those of you who are condemning the Generals words, have you ever thought about what kind of mental gymnastics it takes to live with yourself after killing on the battlefield? You have to ‘enjoy’ your work. You have to stop thinking of the people you kill as people, and see them only as targets to be plinked. If you don’t, you go crazy. :whacky:

War is hell. It is not murder. It is most definately not like abortion. If an innocent dies in war, it is accidental (at least on our side anyway). If you blithely think that you can just ‘get used’ to killing people and be totally normal, you’re wrong. If you compare a soldier who does his duty for God & Country to an abortionist YOU need the counseling…and a severe knock upside the head.

Even Jesus got enraged when people were selling goods in his father’s house. Religion is not all about peace. I am sure a soldier regrets doing what he has to do, but he does it anyway, with a just anger inside of him that someone is hurting another.
People deal with hard things by joking. He’s a marine, not a child.

No, but then again, for the people doing this kind of work, it is probably very difficult, and I’m just saying cut them some slack on these comments. Under the same pressure, would everything WE Say be 100% PC and Christian? Or would we have some defenses up that help us cope with our job. But the Holy Father also must see the need for people to defend us, and that defense just might also included deadly force if necessary, and that’s why there are snipers around.

There’s a very big difference between taking out the trash, and hurting innocents. A big, big, big difference.

You must be able to disassociate your conscience from your actions. It’s part of the job. If you don’t, you get people on your side killed. ‘Enjoying’ your work is the easiest way to do this.

Matt25> There is a very big difference between someone acting as a sniper in a police/security role and that of a military professional ‘on the job’. Most police snipers have never, or very rarely taken another man’s life. Military snipers rack up many many kills over the course of a war. It requires a very different mindset that that of the cop.

I’m not saying that everyday people do this, but it is psychologically necessary for soldiers in battle to ‘demonize’ their enemies. If you think of your enemies as people, you won’t be able to kill them. It is because a soldier has a well formed conscience that this is required. Remember, these are career soldiers who do this for a living. This is their trade…‘Killing is our Business, and Business is Goooood!’

As to a culture of death, I think that it has more to do with selfishness and birth control than anything else…

Amen, and further, if you have never personally experienced the horror of armed conflict, I suggest you keep your opinions on the matter to yourself (I am not speaking directly to you Isaac, I mean anyone who has an uninformed opinion on the matter). Everyone has theories, some of us know the real deal. Until you’ve had to crawl through mud and blood and body parts on 3 hours sleep over 4 days, had one cold meal a day from a plastic bag, and had to hear explosions and bullet whiz past your head and hear human suffering all around you, you have no idea what it is like to be in the predicament of having to shoot another person who intends to take your life.
