Can someone explain the scandal argument in mire depth? If we start living our lives based on what we assume others might assume… I can see some mental health problems starting…

Great link. However the definition in this assumes the couple is engaging in sexual interactions. I think this is where the confusion for the OP lies. I’m not advocating for cohabitation in any way for reference.

That’s why i covered both in the two previous posts as well as Fauken in post 32, At its core is this teaching:

Mk 9:42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

Through ones example, as cited in 1 Cor 8 above, causing someone else to sin is scandal, and itself a grave sin.

I think it is important to always be our brother’s keeper. Everybody doing something gives the impression that it is okay and living together in some cases, does lead to sin and to pushing boundaries. We are called to give example and sometimes it is hard, but it is a sacrifice we’ll worth it and we need to be a light in the world, I personally would not want to put myself or the other person in danger. For me it is common sense and good advice.

I 100% see your point. But we can’t completely throw responsibility to the wind, either. If it’s pretty darn reasonable that folks will see us as condoning serious sin… we ought to rethink our choice. For ex, I have some Catholic mom friends coming over tomorrow. I think it’d be a sin of scandal if I bought a box of condoms and left it out in the bathroom. Even though we’d never use condoms and I’m outspoken about NFP in my parish… it would confuse these ladies and perhaps cause them to think “see. The Church talks about NFP but no one REALLY follows her direction! I guess I can cut corners too.” See that? Scandal.

Ok so the underlying root is to cause another to sin. I guess my question would be the extent of cause. If I shop at Home Depot, even though I’ve heard they give to planned parenthood, would that extend to cause? At some point culpability has to diminish… To be clear again I’m in no way advocating for cohabitation in any form. I think we have to be clear and accurate about doctrine, nether too lax nor too constrictive.
Edit:removed also.

True. But there could be potential benefits of knowing how another person lives or deals with domestic issues before one marries right? I suppose you dont need to live together to do that but how can having more information about the other person be a bad thing?
If only that were true. Cohabitation doesn’t prepare anyone for marriage. There’s no evidence of cohabitation having benefits.
Even if there were, Christian morality and living isn’t based on consequentialist lines of thinking. Nor is it based on what trends are popular in wider society.

I should point out that apparently people who live together prior to marriage are statistically more likely to get divorced after marriage. So… that’s a factor to consider.

I wouldn’t think so but id as a priest if you are unsure. However as an example I used to be an avid Disney fan. Now I don’t buy any of their products, watch their shows or any of their owned networks due to their current moral stances which are against church teaching…but that’s more a protest against them than anything since they aren’t a catholic organization but a secular one and I will tell Catholics why. I find them morally bankrupt myself.

Again, up until fairly recently, respectable people did live their lives so as not to give other people the idea that they were doing something they shouldn’t be doing. They avoided scandalizing the community.

For instance, let’s say that I am seen going into and coming out of the local “house of ill repute” every weeknight. It’s all perfectly innocent — you see, the madam and I have become close friends, and we’re both big fans of Jeopardy. She has a big screen color TV and gets lonely for someone to talk to, ever since her husband died. She pops popcorn, I stop by A&W on the way over and get a couple of fountain root beers, and we kick back and enjoy the show. I’m cheering James on and she hopes someone will break his streak, Emma, Francois, whoever. She knows the literature and sports questions, and I’m better at history and geography. All good clean fun. It’s become my routine. I don’t approve of what goes on there, but I try not to be judgmental.

And when I leave there about an hour later, nobody should have an issue with that… right?

You tell me.
Because I know of a couple who lived like brother and sister and were celibate for over 10 years. Very devout people
That’s lovely, but you know people thought otherwise. Did they tell people they were living celibate?

Thanks for letting us know. I like Lowe’s better anyway. I needed a wooden dowel the other day that only HD had, but aside from that, I typically don’t go there, and now I’ll make it a point not to.

Servant31 For mind boggling irony, this from the Disney cite:

Life

Walt Disney matches gifts] to Susan G. Komen, which helps fund Planned Parenthood, Accessed 4/17/17.

Huh, you have a company geared towards children yet give money to kill children…now that’s kinda shooting yourself in the foot. Oh yes  , definitely kid friendly.

Thanks for the response, appreciated. I completely agree on the condom example. However with a condom there is realistically only one use. Living together could be out of convenience, financial need, etc etc. Again, I’m not advocating for cohabitation in any way, and I don’t want to get legalistic. But at some point everything becomes sin… We can’t do something because the neighbors might see it and think that it’s ok… At some juncture, in the society we live, I think it’s on the neighbor to take responsibility for their own choices and knowledge. If your a youth pastor then it might have more potential to impress upon others.

Edit:I’m asking this is to improve my understanding as well

There are certain things in life we have to buy. We have to maintain proper living conditions for our families, ensure our property is up to code for legal purposes and the good of the community etc. etc. sometimes we have to obtain the goods needed for these things from places that are secular and have differing stances than the Catholic Church. Whereas in the case of the original topic YOU are the source of scandal and sin brought on by your direct decisions and actions. You are the one who is responsible for the the direct actions. You have the choice to not be in that situation which is causing scandal.
I for example shop at a local home goods store that sells everything HD and the other stores have. They are run and operated by a local catholic family. This is likely the case in a lot of places. Therefore they get my business and I know they aren’t promoting things contrary to church teaching.

Lol. Ok just to be clear I Heard that… I would need to research it more to sat that definitively… it was more for the point. If anyone knows for sure however please pipe in.

There’s actually a very important psychological reason that cohabitation before marriage is a bad idea.

If you’re living with someone who’s sharing your bills, you’re going to be less inclined toward communicating well when there’s a conflict. Conflict is avoided out of fear that half your rent will walk out the door if you have a disagreement. So you grin and bear it and never confront what needs to be confronted.
Um, Father, I know marriage is not a part of your life, but why would you think this situation is changed by marriage? You are still, as you put it, sharing bills, and Mrs FiveLinden is as free to walk out the door as she was several decades ago after we married following a time of what you call ‘cohabitation’,

I realize that you and Mrs FiveLinden aren’t Catholic, but if you and your wife take the position that either of you are “free to walk out the door” after several decades of marriage, you’re already so far outside the Catholic view of marriage that it’s hard to even have a discussion with you.

Father has told you the truth, so please be prudent and accept his advice.
The only reasons I’ve seen is Edward george making the argument that people will hide things from each other. I disagree but at least it was an argument!
As a Catholic, are you not going to show a priest some respect? Someone who has studied at seminary for 6-8 years knows a lot more than you about these things!
