I do not believe it should be legislated. That would be counter to fighting the spread of the disease.
Could you expand on this? I am interested in what you mean regarding this, because most people I have heard from (and i know this is just anecdotal) have said that if they forced by law they will comply, but otherwise will not.

No one. I don’t think American governance allows for this type of mandate.

You’d have to give me some examples, I look at them on a case by case basis.

As for why I don’t think this mandate is justified, it’s because I don’t think there’s sufficient evidence for the efficacy of masks for their use to be mandated. To be clear, i do think everyone should wear them as a matter of caution, I just also believe that people should have the right to make the decision for themselves.

This is in contrast to something like vaccinations, where there is an objective causal link between not getting a vaccination and potentially spreading a disease. I’m mostly in favor of mandates for vaccinations because of that demonstrable link.

Unfortunately, the mask question has become so politicized, and there’s so much competing data, that it’s hard to say whether or not an explicit link exists.

Would it be, if someone were to convince that masks effectively reduced the spread of Covid?
Don’t know.
I still see a lot of people relying on the mask and being otherwise efficient spreaders of whatever.
People in this country generally do not practice good hygiene. The mask makes people feel safer when they really are not.

Hypothetically, wouldn’t the answer then be not to jettison masks completely, but to educate people that they aren’t perfect and they still need to social distances, wash their hands, etc.

Courts have frequently upheld rules that limit constitutional rights if they are in the name of safety and are limited in scope. Two examples would be seat belt requirements and public smoking limitations.

During a pandemic, it is challenging to secure the evidence you would prefer to have. There is just not time to run human experiments while people die and get sick. They present a scenario where it really is wise to err on the side of caution.

I feel pretty strongly that if everyone wore the dang masks, we would already be able to do many “normal” things and the economy would be in much better shape. The degree of seriousness one gets COVID19 appears to have correlation with the amount of virus they take in. Masks certainly place a part in reducing the amount of virus ingested.

It’s like saying “seat belts don’t guarantee you won’t die in a car crash, and they make people think they’re invincible so they drive recklessly.”

Even if that were true, it would be an argument to guard against complacency, not ditch seat belts altogether.

Those are valid points to which i don’t have an answer. Perhaps my issue with it stems from the fact that is has become so totally politicized.

No argument from me on that. Many to blame , but one person stands above all others when it comes to the influence they have had on people to be on one side of it and I think we all know who that is.

In a perfect world.
If someone does everything they should, properly, the mask may help.

Of course, we do not live in a perfect world.
