You can see that this was the case as many Catholics did join Infant of Prague in Bay City and St. Dominic Savio in Freeland (both SSPX) in response to the decidedly un-Catholic atmosphere in most of the diocese.

Thankfully that atmosphere is beginning to change now.
Oh yeah…a catholic population of well over 100,000…and about 500 of them went to SSPX churches…that’s a real sign of discontent.

How much do you people really think is different? The utter fascination with misinformation about Saginaw is laughable.

So many are obsessed with nothing but lies and innuendos…but hey…why pay attention to what was really going on for the past 50 years when you can make stuff up to fit a divisive agenda.

“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.”

Luke 15:1-6

I don’t disagree that we should seek out the lost…but there are those who would say ‘liberals should leave the church’…they don’t seem to want to apply the same biblical verse.

The only lies and innuendo I see on this thread are in your posts.

Please…all these threads about Saginaw do is offer zero evidence of anything happening that broke unity with the universal church…but they do a great job of throwing up smokescreens by saying things about how ‘feminist nuns’ were too involved…or they use that grand word ‘authentic’ or ‘orthodox’ to describe what is happening now.

I continue to put the challenge out there…show me where something was out of alignment with the universal church…somewhere that a real break in unity happened…but no one can.

That’s funny, no one on this thread claimed that the diocese broke unity with the Universal Church. All that has been claimed is that many parishes were not following the GIRM and numerous examples of that have been presented. When exactly did you put your “challenge” out there? Was that before or after you questioned the quality of the seminarians in Saginaw?

Looks like the diocese now has 24 seminarians. They all look like faith-filled men to me.

How many were there before the new bishop came in 2005?

I believe there were two, but I could be wrong on that. I know Pope Benedict XVI requested an Impromptu meeting with Bishop Carlson during a trip to Italy to discuss his amazing success with vocations.

When did Frommi question the quality of the seminarians in Saginaw??

I questioned the bishop’s methodology in seemingly taking potential priests from every diocese but his own…and yes, I do question taking in candidates for the priesthood that are rejected by other dioceses.

Nonsense. Did you ever question the methodology of the previous bishop regarding vocations (i.e. the methodology that resulted in essentially zero vocations from either within or outside the diocesan boundaries)?

What does essentially zero mean? Because there were vocations during the 23 year episcopate you are referencing. The two vocations you are celebrating this year did not start with Robert Carlson.

This isn’t nonsense…what’s wrong with questioning a bit what is happening here?

Your lack of a response…that’s nonsensical.

OK frommi,

Go ahead and question.

Which specific seminarian’s vocation are you questioning? If you are questioning the vocation of multiple seminarians, what is your specific difficulty with each one?

How many priests did Bishop Ken ordain during those 23 years?

I don’t know, but this might help fill in some info. From a news release from the diocese’s website, dated June 8, 2007: “Since 2000, the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw has celebrated two priestly ordinations and a total of four priestly ordinations in the last decade, since 1997. The last time two priests were ordained here within the same year was 1995 and the last year more than two were ordained was 1982.”

A current news release says that five will be ordained to the priesthood next year.

Also, I recall that Saginaw’s first permanent deacon in a quarter century was ordained just last year.

It is nonsense because you only question the actions of Bishop Carlson, while ignoring the problems that were there before he arrived. There were 2 seminarians when he arrived, now there are 24. That is an astounding success. Yet you criticize him because they are not from Saginaw and have offered an unsubstantiated rumor that an unspecified number have been “rejected” by another unspecified diocese for an unspecified reason. This is a lame attempt to diminish the obvious success that Bishop Carlson has had in fostering vocations. And by the way, look at just about any diocese and you will see they have seminarians from outside the diocese.

**Let me tell you how NOT to have vocations:
Disobey the Church. Do not accept the teaching of the Magisterium of the Church. Badmouth the Pope and send them to lousy seminaries…you will have NO vocations! Kiss 'em goodbye!

It is absolutely fatal to play fast and loose with faith and morals. Things are getting better but we’ve gone through a very dry period in the Church. I can give you example after example of religious congregations and dioceses that are doing just great with vocations. Why? Because they’re faithful. Period.

Because they’re faithful. They don’t play games with the Doctrine of the Faith. They don’t try to promote in seminarians a kind of attitude of liberal dissent. That is the kiss of death and I can prove it time and time and time again that wherever that is done, there are no vocations. And there won’t be. There won’t be.

Where things are done properly, there are vocations. It’s not hard. It’s not rocket science.**

Let’s be clear about something…anyone right now who is interested in the priesthood is being publically called a ‘seminarian’ by the diocese. The number who have actually received the rite of candidacy is far lower. It is however higher than the last years of the previous episcopate.

I’m not offering unsubstantiated rumors…even Brendan pointed out that one candidate was rejected by Detroit due to age…so there’s fact for you.

My main issue is that bringing priests/candidates for the priesthood into an area who are simply cultists for a particular bishop does not change the culture of vocations in an area. It glosses over the larger problem and simply makes it look good on the surface…look at all these priests…most of whom won’t be able to connect pastorally with the people they have to serve because they don’t know them.

When you offered it, it was unsubstantiated and no explanation was given. It was a smear tactic. Brendan clarified the reason, thankfully. I’m not taking anything you post at face value as you clearly have an agenda that is opposed to this bishop.

That sounds pretty unsubstantiated to me. I think Bishop Carlson and the Diocese of Saginaw know the difference between a seminarian and someone who is just interested in being a seminarian–if not for the simple reason that the diocese is paying for their education.

If someone enters the seminary, they are considered to be a seminarian according to the categories of the church. Candidacy usually comes around the second or third year of theology, meaning that a seminarian could have been studying–as a seminarian–3-5 years before he actually becomes a candidate.
