Seeing some photos of the interior now. I realize there are structural integrity concerns, but it honestly doesn’t look that bad in there. The altar cross was still standing.
Some pics of the inside here…

See inside the fire-ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral
In a way, it looks “sort-of” okay…

I mean, if you look at the altar, it’s like some of the candles weren’t melted… One would think the heat would have warped or liquidated them…

I’ve never seen it in person, but the highly ornate old wooden ambo or lectern (or whatever they call it over there) appears to be unhurt, although the picture of it is small…

So at least some of it still remains… especially and particularly the altar and the relics… for that really is the heart of any and every church…

It appears that all is not lost! From The Notre Dame Cathedral website;
Aftermath:

Thankfully, our prayers have at least been partially answered. The Facade and towers were not destroyed. The roof and cathedral will be rebuilt.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking from the scene, described the fire as a “terrible tragedy,” but added the “worst had been avoided.” He noted that the cathedral’s facade and two main towers did not collapse during the fire.

Macron just announced that, starting Tuesday, he will launch an international fundraising campaign to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral.

“I’m telling you all tonight — we will rebuild this cathedral together. This is probably part of the French destiny. And we will do it in the next years. Starting tomorrow, a national donation scheme will be started that will extend beyond our borders,” Macron said. “Paris without Notre Dame? Madness”.

I know this is probably a pipe dream, but I wish Macron would offer a buy-a-brick program. Would love to put some of my near and dear ones on a stone for Notre Dame

I loved the cathedral ever since I watched the hunchback when I was 2 I saw the beauty in the church. The sat looking at the tv speechless I started to pray the rosary and before I could finish the 1st decade I just cried. I almost felt as if it were a dream and that I would wake up and it would still be there. I credit Notre Dame and God to my love of Gothic Architecture and knowledge that I have learned from researching the Gothic style. I have drawn Notre Dame numerous times over the years in fact I just recently drew a picture of it a few weeks ago. I saw a picture of it yesterday and really this past month I began to fall in love with it even more. It makes me so sad that I may never be able to see it in person as I have wanted to do I am still in so much disbelief. Pray the Memorare ask Mary for her help in rebuilding the cathedral just as it was the day it opened. So many saints have walked in the midst of this cathedral my soon to be confirmation saint Pius X beatified Joan of Arc there. Thomas Aquinas was in Paris when it was constructed. It’s the most devastating thing I’ve seen and the only time I have cried while watching the news. It is sad it is in a way a metaphor for the faith Satan tries to destroy it but those big gothic vaults and soaring buttresses defend we may be battered and beaten but we must never give into him we must fight and defend our faith.

Thank you Rob2 for posting the last Mass from Notre Dame. The whole Mass was absolutely beautiful. That Notre Dame was engulfed in flames is more than heartbreaking.

A fantastic start. However, I’m sure that rebuilding costs will be well into the billions in USD. Still, a great start. I’m sure the money will come in.

I went to bed last night with a heavy heart and did not sleep well .

My first time in Notre-Dame de Paris was in 1961.

This morning I am thinking that if that was how I feel , how must the Parisians and the regular worshippers at Notre-Dame be feeling ?

Some are saying that it will be rebuilt .

It cannot be rebuilt .

You cannot with all the money in the world rebuild Notre-Dame de Paris with its 850 years of history . That is irreplaceable .

Perhaps it is wise now to share the experience of Parisians as last night they turned to prayer as they watched their beloved cathedral burn .

Notre-Dame de Paris, priez pour les Catholiques de Paris et pour tous ceux qui aiment la cathédrale dédiée à votre honneur.

Please pray for Archbishop Michel Aupetit , Archbishop of Paris for just over a year , who for many years before entering seminary was a doctor in Paris , for his auxiliary bishops , and for priests and deacons at Notre-Dame .

I look forward to a unified funding web address to which I can contribute. Whoever finds it first, please post it here.

This is the only charity one I’ve seen so far, there’s loads of Go Fund Me ones but I don’t know where they are sending the money. Hopefully they will get enough money to at least start on the rebuilding.

I don’t think it will be rebuilt with the next 10 years if not longer, at least because of the restoration they should have the knowledge of who can do the work.

Good morning 🌞

It is 9:24 am in Paris. Emmanuel Macron is expected to speak from Notre-Dame at 9:30. Perhaps he will announce the official collection for reconstruction of the cathedral; if so, I’ll post the relevant info.

Note that there are already two other non-crowdfunding collections in progress, one set up by the Ministry of Culture and the other by the Notre-Dame Foundation. The latter already existed to solicit donations for the planned renovation work. I’m holding back posting info on those because both sites are exclusively in French.

The firefighters are on-site, assessing the state of the remaining structure.

A spokesperson for the Paris fire department has just confirmed that the fire is out. The vaulted ceiling is largely intact except for where the spire fell on it (nave). Inspections by firefighters continue. No specialized inspectors (architects, civil engineers, etc.) will be allowed in until the firefighters declare it safe for them to do so. That will take at least a day.

You would be correct. The planned renovation was expected to take 20 years so rebuilding on this scale will surely take much longer than that.

Anything more about what or who was responsible for the fire? Someone is in BIG trouble.

The investigation is currently treating the fire as an accident related to the renovation work in progress. They don’t believe at this time that the fire was deliberately set. (BFMTV, around 10:15am CEST [Central European Summer Time])
