How about Canada, Germany, all of Scandinavia?

Have you ever been to ANY medium sized city in Europe. Well, you don’t need a car because public transportation is sufficient or even superior to owning a car.

In the US you can really only say this in NYC or Boston.
It is ridiculous to think that this is a solution for the majority of the US. Remember the
“fly-over country”? El Paso is probably a medium-sized city, but with our terrain and
natural and international borders, it would be impossible and or super expensive to set
up public transportation.* But with the Obama focus on dissing the suburbs, it is the
poor in the majority of the US who suffer with the results of the “green energy” initiatives.
All have wasted vast amounts of money and the regs. have just increased the cost of
gasoline, and all the expenses of living like food. Even with food stamps, they are
paying more.
Public transportation of the type you’re talking about, Europeon style.

uuuh, look at my sig. 🙂

American cities are also more spread out and farther apart than in Europe

I used to take the bus to work until I moved out of the city a couple of years ago because I couldn’t afford my house any more. Property taxes in the city and Energy prices were to high, and I’m not getting any raises. 😦

I get more bang for my buck in the burbs.

THe suburban explosion in the 40’s and 50’s and the phenomena of “white flight”, in the 70’s and 80’s have certainly caused enormous problems in the American landscape.

Yes, there are cities where a European style of mass transit couldn’t be executed at present, but there are opportunities out there- including some locales which could be greatly improved by such initiatives.

It depends on how one defines “socially progressive”.

I do not support SS marriage, abortion, and the contraception mandate-
y.
Of course you do. You are voting for a man who has made it crystal clear he would do everything in his power to continue to force these positions on the american populace. There is absolutely nothing he can do that mitigate his support of these abject evils-nothing.

Sorry didn’t notice your signature. 🙂

Weird. Here in Buffalo the taxes are cheap in the city and expensive in the burbs.

I cant stand the burbs myself.

I have been to may cities, in and out of the US.

Couldn’t stand to live in a city, essentially on top of one another.

And thanks but no thanks to mass transit. (And yes, I have been in both, Europe’s and ours.)

What? He’s been doing this his whole life. Must be Obama you’re talking about.
No, it was Paul Ryan at a St. Vincent de Paul Center a few weeks ago.
I’m sure most of the “biased right-wingers” here on CAF could tell you. 😉
Do they know what kulebiak or caldo gallego or pollo trastavere or pierogi or pot au feu or “petits pâtés a la sage” are? 😛 😛

You would of course know, but I’m speaking of the others. 😃

I’ve made everyone of those dishes!! And they were delicious!!

As a visually impaired person I depend on mass transit to do many dat-today activities. My wife and I needed to move from Boston to Buffalo as a good job came up.

I personall like living near other people and appreciate the heterogeneity of the city. I find the burbs to be. . . blah. . . . 🤷

A country girl to be sure!

Give me New York City with its smells and tastes and crime and crowds and Subways and Metro North any day! 😃

I don’t know but I certainly support every single person who needs them to receive them.
Sure, but I think that fewer people would need them if there were different economic policies in place. We have more people on EBT now than every before: why? Because there are more people who *cannot *find jobs than ever before. That’s not a good thing!
It depends on how one defines “socially progressive”.

I do not support SS marriage, abortion, and the contraception mandate- though I support socialized medical coverage.

When I say “socially Progressive” I am referring to actual maternity leave consistent with the rest of the civilized world not a bastardized system which is basically short-term disability,
What about a system in which mothers can choose to stay at home with their children *all the time? *What about an economy which allows families to have a reasonable standard of living *without *taking both parents away from the home?
paternity leave,
Why?
a living wage,
From RerumNovarum, ¶46. If a workman’s wages be sufficient to enable him comfortably to support himself, his wife, and his children…
increased support for social programs- especially aimed at pregnant teens and young mothers,
The best way to avoid childhood poverty is for the parents to get a high school diploma and wait til marriage to have children. Talking about spending money to help those who become pregnant before marriage without discussing all the social encouragements and pressures to have sex before marriage is *not *social justice, it is madness.
affirmative action
Which is not really helping anyone except those who still feel guilty… is it really helpful to put someone in a position in which they lack the resources to succeed? Does discriminating according to race ease racial tensions? Again we are looking at the easy, feel-good band-aid action rather than looking at the real sources of the problem and dealing with them.
and hate crime legislation,
Absurd…
immigration reform that doesn’t include “higher fences”, etc. etc.
You know that poor are the ones most hurt by illegal immigration? You realize that illegal immigration provides a cover for actual criminals to go back and forth?

I agree our immigration policies need to be overhauled, but simply ignoring the very real problems that accompany lack of enforcement will not help.
I believe that government can help to build a more just society.
I believe that government has a role to play in building a more just society, but that a more just society will not be built by increasing the number of band-aid solutions and division within our society, but instead by considering what true social justice is and then working on the sources of the problems which prevent it.

Heres (name removed by moderator)ut from Cardinal Ratzinger :

*Cardinal-designate Burke said Catholic politicians who support legal abortion were perfect examples of “scandal” – leading the faithful into moral confusion or error.

Catholics who would betray their Catholic faith in political life, legislators or judges or whatever it may be, leading other people to believe that abortion must not be the great evil that it is, or that abortion is in fact a good thing in some circumstances."
*

You, evidently, would have us believe that it’s okay to vote for the people Burke mentions but not okay to take positions you elect them to carry out. you have yet to post a quote from a single member of the magestrium that indicated there were proportionate reasons that would allow a Catholic to vote for a pro-abortion candidate whose opponent is less proportionate and they are.

Living downtown was great, until I had to worry about children, crime, and the public school system. 😃

In Christine and my native St. Louis, the city has an additional 1% income tax, and additional taxes to gas, groceries, etc.

We many be a little unique in that respect, as St. Louis City and St. Louis county are separate entities. Only Baltimore has a similar setup.

I couldn’t either. Being able to put a little into a retirement fund every month made like it though, plastic siding, carpeting and all. 😃

I shouldn’t complain, because I choose to work for a company that pays me a lot less than most accountants coming out of school make. My company cares about the poor. We give them jobs.🙂

I do not believe the Catholic Dems who post in these forums do so in defiance of Catholic teaching. It has already been said that we do not agree with President Obama’s position on the abortion issue and other issues mentioned above.
I note that very little is ever mentioned in these political forums about the social justice work the Government does for the common good of our people.
When it is commented on , you are almost certain to hear one of you scream Socialism!/U] Social Justice is not Socialism!
Peace, Carlan

Mine too! Before Obama tried to force us to fund evil we even provided them with health insurance.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that St. Louis is rather small, surrounded by umpteen small towns without any real separation between them. Still, it’s a fabulous city - so many free municipal attractions and great food (especially Italian). I’m looking forward to going up there again soon. 😃

I was talking with a man who sells used cars for a living, and he said that Cash for Clunkers destroyed the really inexpensive cars that the poor are able to buy. He is in a place which is very spread out and which has very little public transportation. Yet another example of green actions hurting the poor.

Of course they are:

“No, you can never vote for someone who favors absolutely what’s called the ‘right to choice’ of a woman to destroy human life in her womb, or the right to a procured abortion,” he said.

“You may in some circumstances where you don’t have any candidate who is proposing to eliminate all abortion, choose the candidate who will most limit this grave evil in our country, but you could never justify voting for a candidate who not only does not want to limit abortion but believes that it should be available to everyone,”

Cardinal Burke

the reason you don’t hear a lot about social justice in these forums is the term social justice has been co-opted by the left and is used to justify abortion, homosexual behavior, same-sex marriage, affirmative action, excessive regulation and excessive taxation. They, of course, ignore the fact that no amount of social justice is adequate for those denied the right to life.

But, you work for a small company, Christine. How many jobs can they offer the poor? They’re not an auto plant. 🙂
