How about Canada, Germany, all of Scandinavia?

Have you ever been to ANY medium sized city in Europe. Well, you don’t need a car because public transportation is sufficient or even superior to owning a car.

In the US you can really only say this in NYC or Boston.

It is ridiculous to think that this is a solution for the majority of the US. Remember the
“fly-over country”? El Paso is probably a medium-sized city, but with our terrain and
natural and international borders, it would be impossible and or super expensive to set
up public transportation.* But with the Obama focus on dissing the suburbs, it is the
poor in the majority of the US who suffer with the results of the “green energy” initiatives.
All have wasted vast amounts of money and the regs. have just increased the cost of
gasoline, and all the expenses of living like food. Even with food stamps, they are
paying more.
Public transportation of the type you’re talking about, Europeon style.

I used to take the bus to work until I moved out of the city a couple of years ago because I couldn’t afford my house any more. Property taxes in the city and Energy prices were to high, and I’m not getting any raises.

I get more bang for my buck in the burbs.

THe suburban explosion in the 40’s and 50’s and the phenomena of “white flight”, in the 70’s and 80’s have certainly caused enormous problems in the American landscape.

Yes, there are cities where a European style of mass transit couldn’t be executed at present, but there are opportunities out there- including some locales which could be greatly improved by such initiatives.

As a visually impaired person I depend on mass transit to do many dat-today activities. My wife and I needed to move from Boston to Buffalo as a good job came up.

I personall like living near other people and appreciate the heterogeneity of the city. I find the burbs to be. . . blah. . . .

Sure, but I think that fewer people would need them if there were different economic policies in place. We have more people on EBT now than every before: why? Because there are more people who *cannot *find jobs than ever before. That’s not a good thing!

You know that poor are the ones most hurt by illegal immigration? You realize that illegal immigration provides a cover for actual criminals to go back and forth?

I agree our immigration policies need to be overhauled, but simply ignoring the very real problems that accompany lack of enforcement will not help.

I believe that government can help to build a more just society.

I believe that government has a role to play in building a more just society, but that a more just society will not be built by increasing the number of band-aid solutions and division within our society, but instead by considering what true social justice is and then working on the sources of the problems which prevent it.

Living downtown was great, until I had to worry about children, crime, and the public school system.

In Christine and my native St. Louis, the city has an additional 1% income tax, and additional taxes to gas, groceries, etc.

We many be a little unique in that respect, as St. Louis City and St. Louis county are separate entities. Only Baltimore has a similar setup.

I shouldn’t complain, because I choose to work for a company that pays me a lot less than most accountants coming out of school make. My company cares about the poor. We give them jobs.

I do not believe the Catholic Dems who post in these forums do so in defiance of Catholic teaching. It has already been said that we do not agree with President Obama’s position on the abortion issue and other issues mentioned above.
I note that very little is ever mentioned in these political forums about the social justice work the Government does for the common good of our people.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that St. Louis is rather small, surrounded by umpteen small towns without any real separation between them. Still, it’s a fabulous city - so many free municipal attractions and great food (especially Italian). I’m looking forward to going up there again soon.

I was talking with a man who sells used cars for a living, and he said that Cash for Clunkers destroyed the really inexpensive cars that the poor are able to buy. He is in a place which is very spread out and which has very little public transportation. Yet another example of green actions hurting the poor.

the reason you don’t hear a lot about social justice in these forums is the term social justice has been co-opted by the left and is used to justify abortion, homosexual behavior, same-sex marriage, affirmative action, excessive regulation and excessive taxation. They, of course, ignore the fact that no amount of social justice is adequate for those denied the right to life.

But, you work for a small company, Christine. How many jobs can they offer the poor? They’re not an auto plant.
