Regardless of what he had done in the past or who Zimmerman perceived him to be, Martin did not commit any crime that night. U.S. citizens including teenage black males have the constitutional right to move about freely without molestation!

Shooting Murder of Trayvon Martin
Obama Files Federal Charges Against George Zimmerman Following Acquittal in Shooting Murder of Trayvon Martin

Just when we thought the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin case was over after Zimmerman’s acquittal, the Obama Administration has taken the steps needed to file federal charges, thus sidestepping the well established double jeopardy, against Zimmerman. Unidentified sources within the Administration have confirmed that Obama, and Justice Eric Holder at the Department of Justice have filed charges against Zimmerman for “violating Trayvon Martin’s civil rights”.
He just can’t help himself, can he?

Couple of questions as an outsider from Canada:

If Martin had killed Zimmerman could he have used the SYG rules as a defence?

Wasn’t Martin standing his ground when Zimmerman approached/attacked/interacted with him?

How could Zimmerman use the SYG law when he was the one who approached/followed/stalked Martin in the first place?

Zimmerman was told not to follow Martin and that police were on the way – that was an opportunity to retreat.
It’s apparent you have no idea what “duty to retreat” means. Be glad those that do run the legal system, because you never know when you might end up in a situation where you are being attacked and have to defend yourself.

Duty to retreat does not require someone to know the future. There had been no confrontation at that point so nothing to retreat from.

Heh you caught that too eh ? Its alright for that crowd not everyone else ? 🤷
Wait, you mean the pacifist crowd that doesn’t think we should be able to defend ourselves is calling for blood? Oh the irony.

No. My point was that in the wake of SYG laws, killings of blacks seem to be more legally justified. I accept the Church’s teachings on self-defense. But retreat is a viable option of self-defense, as well.
I’d say that retreat is the FIRST option as a Catholic, and in Martial Arts.

It’s only when you’ve turned the other cheek and your life (or the life of another) is still in danger that a person should turn to violence.

huh? Since when is it not a crime to punch someone, knock them to the ground and then repeatedly slam their head into concrete?

I dont believe this story. Not even Obama is that stupid.
If he does do this or this is true, there will be such a huge backlash against him. I don’t want to see Zimmerman put on a show trial.

Martin was probably in fear of Zimmerman and was “standing his ground”. Unfortunately we can’t hear his side of the story. I’m not saying the prosecution proved their case. I am saying that when Zimmerman decided to leave his car an follow this young man who had done nothing wrong the dynamic changed completely.

Agreed.

I concur with this.

Hopefully this guy gets a charge… if I was Zimmerman I would sue…

another sickening tweet from last night.

If people want to be ticked, be ticked at the prosecution for building such a weak case that from what i’ve seen, experts agree that the prosecution’s witness’ was HELPING the defense.

As far as i’m concerned, justice was served last night. Zimmerman was tried before a jury of his peers and was found not guilty.

Perhaps GZ pulled his gun out and a fight pursued. TM slamming GZ head to the ground could easily have been in self defense.

Defend yourself by any means neccessary IMO.
A good plan would be to avoid situations that might put you in harm’s way. It’s not a good plan to follow around your own perceived suspects and frighten them so much they could be possibly afraid for the safety of their own lives. Especially dangerous if you feel they are "on drugs: and “suspect”. I can’t imagine any police officer telling anyone in any Neighborhood watch training to follow such a person.

The acquittal is no surprise to me for that was predicted from the beginning by most defense attorney experts. It was even said by Jose Baez that a first years law student could win the case because TM is not here to give his account of the incident.

The wrongful death suit has been settled by the association in Zimmerman’s neighborhood.

Just let the police handle it next time. That said I do believe that police officers have a definitively different “job” than citizens that’s why they are trained to handle such situations.

And knives… and bats… etc. Sad but true… Chicago has the toughest guns laws… with the most gun violence… see the connection ?
There are also people killed and injured from gun shot every day as well.

Retreat, avoidance is the preferred option. However, the issue really arose because inevitably in self-defense cases the monday morning quarterbacking of whether a person could have retreated or not varied considerably from jury to jury.

A woman in a parking lot being told she could have ‘jumped’ over one of the cars next to her. Or folks being told they could have turned and run away from an attacker. Well, how do you know you’re faster? You’re vulnerable with your back turned etc. etc. etc.
