Retreat, avoidance is the preferred option. However, the issue really arose because inevitably in self-defense cases the monday morning quarterbacking of whether a person could have retreated or not varied considerably from jury to jury.

A woman in a parking lot being told she could have ‘jumped’ over one of the cars next to her. Or folks being told they could have turned and run away from an attacker. Well, how do you know you’re faster? You’re vulnerable with your back turned etc. etc. etc.
Retreat is the first option, but if not prudent to attempt retreat then it’s not a viable option.

Common sense really.

Perhaps GZ pulled his gun out and a fight pursued. TM slamming GZ head to the ground could easily have been in self defense.
Yes that could very well have happened. I do believe Zimmerman would have liked to apprehend his “suspect” and the record shows he did want to be a police officer.
We don’t need this to happen again.

Not when they are trying to beat someone to death. Plus tm was loitering around houses that he wasn’t staying at. Also they found neighbors jewelry under his bed. Give me a break.
Regardless of what he had done in the past or who Zimmerman perceived him to be, Martin did not commit any crime that night. U.S. citizens including teenage black males have the constitutional right to move about freely without molestation!

If I were an advocate for Trayvon, you know what my beef would be???

There were no males, there were no blacks on the Jury. I think that would be my problem.

12 or 6 person jury, that can go either way. 12 persons is generally going to be more diverse.

I find it disgusting how racism got into this. Clearly not many read or viewed the trial and evidence. The verdict was just. THIS WAS A DAVID AND GOLIATH CASE. David won! I wish them peace. Although I have the feeling that Zimmerman won’t get peace. I pray that something good can happen to both families. My heart is broken.

I think I read that somewhere where the HMA shelled out $1 mil. Nothing like a money grab. Disgusting.
A good plan would be to avoid situations that might put you in harm’s way. It’s not a good plan to follow around your own perceived suspects and frighten them so much they could be possibly afraid for the safety of their own lives. Especially dangerous if you feel they are "on drugs: and “suspect”. I can’t imagine any police officer telling anyone in any Neighborhood watch training to follow such a person.

The acquittal is no surprise to me for that was predicted from the beginning by most defense attorney experts. It was even said by Jose Baez that a first years law student could win the case because TM is not here to give his account of the incident.

The wrongful death suit has been settled by the association in Zimmerman’s neighborhood.

Just let the police handle it next time. That said I do believe that police officers have a definitively different “job” than citizens that’s why they are trained to handle such situations.

I think Zimmerman was going back to his truck, he lost sight of Martin, that is on the 911 call.

So if one is going to call “molestation” following someone and is talking about confrontation.

I believe it is Zimmerman’s word per the interviews and not sworn court testimony that he was going back to his truck, Martin says to him “You got a problem?”, Zimmerman says “No”, then Martin says “Now you do” and then according to Zimmernan, he gets punched.

People really should read the 911 court and know the basic narrative here.

I dont care what they found under his bed. At that moment he was walking home and doing nothing else. George Zimmerman fulfilled his duties when he called the police.

Agreed on avoidance and de-escalation. However, the evidence doesn’t support Zimmerman having continued to follow M. And although you couldn’t imagine it, the neighborhood watch coordinator for the SPD who worked with Martin said there was nothing wrong with following from a safe distance.

A lot ofl lawyers with experience in self-defense cases said it should never have gone to court at all because of the complete lack of evidence to support the charges in the first place. As well as the charging affidavit being faulty in leaving out considerable information. Dershowitz, McDaniel, Jacobson, Branca, Reynolds etc. etc.

According to Zimmerman, he was trying to get the police officers to handle it. There is no evidence to support him trying to confront, much less detain M.

The way to avoid this is to disband NW organizations. As I said before Mary, this case has convinced me to never be associated with assisting in my neighborhood lest it be portrayed as some kind of vigilantism or thirst for blood and confrontation should I ever be attacked.

Or perhaps it was because Martin was a racist (the “creepy cracker” racist comment he made) and being high on marijuana (the autopsy results found THC in his system), he wanted to test out his MMA fighting skills. Just as some whites are racist, so are some blacks. And blacks who are racist are known to beat up random whites they see. I know because it happened to me when I was a kid. I’m only half-white, but they mistook me for white. I used to know of some all black neighborhoods that if a white person walked through it was a guarantee they would get jumped and beat up just for being white.

Zimmerman was told not to follow Martin and that police were on the way – that was an opportunity to retreat.
At that point, Zimmerman did not yet know that possibly lethal force would be used against him.

David won??? (Throws up hands)

And Z was justified in shooting tm… and tm WAS loitering around homes that weren’t his dads.

Except with all the time in the world in court, you will be second guessed. Avenues weren’t even aware existed will be shown to be obvious choices. No account for your focus on an impending attack, etc. You will be judged by people with all the time in the world to consider your actions in a situation where you may have had seconds to make your decisions.

Common sense is different to different people with different life experiences.
