Today at Mass, when it was over, a woman came down from the rafter seat and i was on my way out of the church. She was wearing the most appalling attire i have ever seen at a Mass, NO Mass or TLM!

she had on the tightest pair of pasted on pants that i ever seen! i was deeply unahppy about it. i politely took her aside
and told her she should not wear such attire to Mass.

the guy who was with her told me she did not speak english, so i told him to tell her that she should wear more appropriate
attire to Mass, and in our church, you must if you are a woman, wear a long skirt/dress and a head covering.

i demonstrated to her when he told me she did not speak english, that she should wear a skirt and not skin tight pants and a head covering. the head covering thing was not what had offended me, it was the pasted on pants.

he only smiled when i told him what the girl ought to be wearing. it was like she came in her personal self if you know what i mean, without me getting blunt here.

i have never been so offended in my entire life. all the people who saw her were shocked to say the least. when i politely pointed to my skirt and my head covering i told her this is the attire we wear to Mass, she just laughed it off like it was no big deal.

i can’t believe she wore the hooker pants to Mass! i never seen such a disgusting attire at Mass in my entire life! not in the NO and not in the TLM!
I applaud you!
Well done. Don’t worry if you think you were heavy handed. It’s quite obvious she had never even thought about what type of building she was entering. I will pray for her.
Well done again. We need more strength like this shown to our youth.

i left a voice message on fathers machine, as my hubby needed to know when his catechism lesson was, and father called me back, we spoke about this incident and he told me i did the right thing, and he thanked me for politely taking her aside and speaking to her.
some of us never doubted this…but I am glad that you got the same answer from Father:thumbsup: 🙂

I wasn’t aware that 1st century whores wore skin tight pants… And how do you know Jesus didn’t enforce it? She must have ended her prostitution and repented otherwise she wouldn’t be a saint now, would she?
So Mary Magdaline was a WHORE!!!

👍
but then that is just my humble opinion
I read all the post and I can tell you I am in shock from some here. Maybe I shouldn’t be though I was afarid that we would get attacked by people wanting to shut down our new forum here.

I can’t believe any of you would chide Marilena, as if what she did was bad. I am appaled that some here think it doesn’t matter how they go see our Lord. Sickening, just sickening and a Protestant attitude to boot.

If we believe Christ is the King of Kings then we should want to dress in our best. Sure some may not have three piece suits and I don’t see anyone asking for that. But are people so dense to think they can dress any old way.

It all comes down to the fact that this culture doesn’t know respect and wouldn’t know it if it bites them in the tush. All MHO

It is not mentioned in Sacred Scripture. St. Gregory the Great identifies her with the woman who wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair. Even in the Traditional Matins where she is celebrated as a penitent, it is not specified what her sin is though from the Gospel homily it *could *maybe be inferred,

😉 thanks that is what I thought

What say I now? I still maintain that it was rude and arrogant. Regardless of what Father might say.

Sorry - rude is rude.

Well, father rules the roost in his own parish.
I personally would rather be told from another woman than by Father himself!

This post has been eye-opening for me. I’ve always wanted to attend a TLM, but I never realized that it has a required dress code. I usually wear a skirt to Mass but occassionally I wear slacks. I don’t own any headcoverings. What happens if you show up at a TLM, are not wearing the proper dress and someone notices before Mass? Are you asked to leave or are there clothes there that you can borrow?
I think the OP attends an SSPX chapel. The SSPX are the only ones who require such a rigorous dress code for women.

I used to attend an FSSP parish. We had a dress code, but it was mainly no bare shoulders or exposed midriffs, no shorts (men or women), no sleeveless, dresses should be at least knee-length. Pretty basic stuff. Pants for women were certainly allowed.

Veils for women were encouraged as “more respectful” but not required. We did have a basket of extra veils in the narthex for those who wanted to borrow one for Mass.

Makes you wonder how different our sacred tradition would look if Jesus had enforced “the dress code” on, say Mary Magdalene, instead of welcoming her with compassion…just a thought.
We don’t know what Jesus said if Mary Magdalene was dressed immodestly back then. We do know that St. John the Baptist publicly chastised Herod for adultery.

Is it your contention that only SSPX care about modesty? I surely hope not. I know they don’t. Sin is sin and while we don’t know what is in her heart we do know that her attire can cause others to sin.

Marilena handled herself well and a TRUE GENTLEMAN would never publicly criticize a Lady who valued modesty enough to bring to her attention (note bring to her attention not drag her to the public square and flog her).

We also have to remember that Jesus told the woman caught in adultery “To sin no more.” He did not send her out with a glib, “Okay as long as your heart’s fine, that alright with me.” He did correct her in a gentle way. Which is what Marilina did.

If there is a dress code then there is no reason why someone shouldn’t gently suggest that it be enforced.

My church doesn’t have any dress code so it would be rude for me to speak about others dress but if I chose to go to Marilina’s church then I would certainly expect someone to correct me if I broke the rules.

If a person doesn’t like the rules in Marilina’s church then they have the freedom to attend a different church. That is fair.

i wasn’t “heavy handed” at all. i was VERY polite to her.

this OP does attend an SSPX chapel indeed. We are not the only church to appreciate modesty in dress either. iam quite sure there are others out there that require modesty.

Do I sense a hint of jealousy, or envy? Remember that the prodigal son committed sins of the flesh, and the good brother committed the sins of the heart which were worse. Church is the best place for sinners! Remember that head coverings are a thing of the past and they are not required or even recommended anymore. you should not be humiliating this woman, especially in front of other people. I find it hard to believe that you were doing it for her sake and not your own, do you realize that you are still mad about a pair of pants? Ive seen worse in my day! What she was wearing is certainly disrespectful, but why do you think that you can cast the first stone? You were sinning in your heart being openly sanctimonious and disrespecting her as a daughter of Christ! I cant see anyone not fitting in and not realizing it! I dont think you can call someone a hooker and still call yourself a christian! Do you see why so many people leave the church to go to more accepting ones? Im sure the girl was not wearing them to be scandalous. For all you know… Well for all dont know I should say… You dont know what the reason for it was! SO STOP CASTING STONES!

you have got to be kidding right? jealousy? if you knew me you’d never even think of that let alone state it. i wasn’t mad, i was disgusted and disappointed. and i was not “sanctimonious” as you so richly put it. does that make all the other women and men there who openly were shocked sanctimonious as well? or am i only santcimonious as you put it because i went up and politely took her aside and spoke to her? umm where is the sanctimonious act in that? do you not think that her giggling as the men gawked at her a little sanctimonious on her part, and complete disdain for our Lord?

do you think our Lord would’ve called my actions sanctimonious? hardly! i wasn’t casting stones friend, i was trying to tell her as politely as possible our dress code. For the record, i took her aside AWAY from people. One more thing, i NEVER called her a hooker, so get your facts straight.

The OP didn’t call the woman a hooker, someone else on this thread jokingly made that reference.

What ever does the OP have to be jealous about? I don’t even understand that comment. Are you suggesting that if a woman is modest that she is somehow jealous of women who are not?

I will say this again, Jesus didn’t send the woman caught in adultery on her merry way. He told her “TO SIN NO MORE.” He corrected her in a gentle way.

Besides I fail to see how correcting a woman’s dress in a church that has rules(didn’t the OP say that her particular church had rules on dress?) is equal to commiting homicide through stoning.

.

i have never been so disgusted in my life.
Really? It’s funny. I’ve been trying to think what had disgusted me most in my life. The AIDS pandemic I think - and how people respond. Or maybe that a child dies of poverty every six seconds. I can’t say it’s how someone dresses. But then I worked on a project with prostitutes a few years back, and it’s funny how, when I looked into their eyes, and heard their stories, I saw Christ there, in all his brokenness.

This isn’t a forum I post on, and I respect that you have different understandings of the Mass and worship, but I was drawn by the title on the main list. I just wonder, who did God see when he looked at her? Someone dressed disrespectfully? Or his kid who hadn’t come to visit in a long time, and he was delighted to see?

i was disgusted as i stated before because of the way she dressed and the complete lack of respect for our Lord. The people that saw her were shocked and she giggled about the guys gawking at her. that is complete disdain for our Lord, so you tell me, do you think Christ was happy about it?
