I don’t know. I have heard mentioned that one of the issues is that he has business partners, so their information would also be public record. If you were a business partner with someone, would you want all of your personal data made public just because your ex-partner’s political opponent wants to highlight that you are part of the 1%…something everyone already knows?
She was talking about why is Obama hiding his transcripts.

This has been beaten to death but please don’t get the idea that Mitt’s millions are in gold bullion stored in a safety deposit box in the Caymen Islands. Money is fungible and many countries that have operations in the US have and use capital from overseas.

Further, do you hold yourself to the same standard? Those who complain that Romney has overseas bank accounts probablly have products in their homes from China. Why not buy ONLY American products? Why not help OUR economy Joe?

Lisa
When I was studying abroad, my parents had me open a bank account so I could pay my bills.

My parents used to put their money in foreign bank accounts because a lot of their business was in foreign countries.

It was all perfectly legal.

I do think it is illegal to have money in an Iranian bank though, among others.

Yes, I agree with you, and have said numerous times that I am opposed to the HHS mandate since it curtails the religious freedom of Catholic institutions. I was not aware of the Lutheran church controversy. How is it possible that the State can determine who Lutheran ministers are?
Well, that’s what the Supreme Court wondered too, in the Hosanna Tabor case, decided within the year. It was exactly the Obama Justice Dept who argued that, while the Lutheran Church is immune from requirements of the EEOC when it comes to “ministers”, the government has the power to decide who are Lutheran “ministers” and who are not when it comes to applications of the law, regardless of what the Lutheran Church thinks about who its ministers are.

The Supreme Court decided in favor of the Lutheran Church, unanimously I believe.

So, taking into account the HHS mandate as well, I think we pretty well know what this administration’s approach to religion is.

There is a Bermuda-based entity called Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd., which has been described in securities filings as “a Bermuda corporation wholly owned by W. Mitt Romney.”
Bain capital has at least 138 funds organized in the Cayman Islands, and Romney himself has personal interests in at least 12

The article is full of hearsay and anonymity.

If you don’t like our tax laws vote in a new Congress.

You do not know that he has “tax shelters” in the Cayman Islands. He has paid every penny of every tax he owes. The IRS makes sure of that.

You are judging his heart. Mr. Romney has given millions to charity. Something most of us are unable to do.

Here is some more of Mitt’s generosity.which byt the way he never brags about
According to this article Mr. Romney has tax shelters in the Cayman Islands. If this article is misrepresenting the facts, then I stand corrected and sincerely apologize to Mr. Romney, his family and those who are supporting him in this election.

Is it illegal? Do you know what a tax shelter is?

I take tax shelters too when I deduct my charitable contributions and my mortgage interest.

Mitt Romney does not get a charitable tax deductions from his donations to the Mormon church, because they are not a 501c.

Deductions are not the same as tax shelters, but I am not a tax expert. I never said that tax shelters were illegal. My only concern is that Jesus said that we were not to store up treasures on earth, but rather treasures in heaven. He then goes unto to say that we can not serve both God and mammon at the same time.

Maybe Mr. Romney is storing up his wealth in the Cayman Islands because someday he plans to give it all to the Mormon church, so I should not presume, should I?

Note the cagey language used…this COULD…this MIGHT…Note the use of the term “tax shelter” with regard to IIRAs. Bet Joe and Mabel didn’t know they were in “tax shelters.”
WaPo is very Left of Center and not going to give Romney the benefit of the doubt but portray his investments as shady and mysterious.

As was asked before, do you understand a “tax shelter?” Is this evil? I posted Justice Learned Hand’s famous quote in which he said there is nothing noble about paying more taxes than you owe. People are perfectly free to arrange their affairs to benefit their family’s financial situation including such ‘shelters’ as a home mortgage, child care payments, donations to charities.

Of course WaPo used the charged language to make it sound ever so much more frightening…

The offshore arrangement ***could have ***spared Romney a form of U.S. tax that can apply even to individual retirement accounts, experts say.

IRAs are widely used investment vehicles that allow people to save money and postpone paying taxes on it until their golden years. But even within the shelter of tax-exempt entities such as IRAs or nonprofit organizations, some investments can trigger taxes by throwing off profits known as “unrelated business taxable income

BTW Micah, most shelters simply DEFER taxation to a future period. Very few provide permanent tax savings.

He said that in response to the man building a barn. The focus of the man was on his treasure, so much so, that he didn’t have any family to leave it to.

You are judging Mitt’s motives. His actions and the way he lives his life show that he is a decent and honest man.

It is not sinful to be rich.

Stop twisting Bible verses to demonize Mitt Romney, please. You are making ad hominem attacks.

Perceptions are everything when and if a person decides to vote. Tax shelters in the Cayman Islands give me the perception that Mr. R is serving mammon. You know what?
I could be wrong in my perception. Thankfully, I do not vote.

God’s peace

What tax shelters are those?

Prove to me that WPost misstated the facts, and I will apologize.

My issue was not whether tax shelters were illegal, my issue is more with the storing up wealth on earth which I have already addressed. No need to further our discussions, as they are differences of perceptions of Mr. Romney, and of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Views on what? National security? The economy? Life issues? Social issues?

If you were voting for Parish Priest, Mitt Romney’s religious affiliation would be relevant. You aren’t and it’s not. While his faith informs him you cannot know his heart, what he believes or doesn’t believe. What you can observe is the way he’s lived his life. He has consistently been a servant, to his family, to his country, and to God. Would we have more such individuals in our government I think it would be far less corrupt, wasteful, and anti religion as it is now.

Your prejudice against a particular faith seems to be the over riding principle in your decision. That sounds not only bigoted but in opposition to the specific prohibition AGAINST a religious test in our government.

While I wasn’t Catholic at the time, apparently the same things were said of JFK. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. But hey you’re right, it is your right to vote for whomever you wish.

Lisa
Thank you. 👍

Some people don’t seem to understand how important investments are to a free capitalist society.

I thinking it’s because Obama thinks tax and spend are investments.

The Obama’s are very well off. Why is there no criticism of him?

Oh that’s right, he’s a Black, Liberal Democrat…

People are free to store up wealth here on Earth. There is nothing wrong with that.

Since you made the allegation, what facts do you have that Romney is serving mammon rather than God?

If you’re issue is simply that he is using tax shelters and deductions to avoid paying taxes, shouldn’t we do away with shelters and deductions?

it is not rude to proclaim the truth. It is rude to assume one is ignorant, bigoted, pro choice, take comments out of context and to disregard ones opinions as insignificant or question ones faith because they may not adhere completely to your views or even the majority. There is a way to disagree while still showing respect. I do not ask you to agree with me, I ask for your respect. Do you think I should vote for someone who’s views I do not agree with?
People are merely pointing out that the reasons you have stated should not any bearing on a Presidential election. There is nothing in his past that would indicate that he would force everyone to convert to mormonism.

As Lisa pointed out, people were making the same bigoted remarks about JFK. He is regarded by many historians as one of the better presidents of the 20th century,

Prove to me that Mitt Romney worships money. I already posted some of his altruistic endeavors.

Stop defaming a man for being rich.

Elizabeth, I am not silent on moral issues. As I’ve indicated,** I protest any and all religious restrictions**. .
So, to be clear, if an Aryan cult beileves in killing Jews or Satanists want to sacrifice virgins, you would oppose a government’s interferance into their actions because there shouldn’t be any religious restrictions, correct?

It hasn’t been the norm for presidential candidates to release their college transcripts but GWB’s were leaked to the press. The interest there was that he nearly failed high school and bombed out of a community college so some people wanted to know how he managed to get into Yale and what his GPA was. I believe Kerry’s transcripts were also leaked. The demand for Obama to release his Columbia transcripts is the new face of the birther movement; started by some random guy who claims he never saw Obama on the Columbia campus.
But, what could possibly be in Obama’s transcripts that would compel him to keep them sealed? He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard, right? One would think he would be proud of his accomplishments and publish his transcripts to inspire millions of children who want to be president some day.
