Ryan is a very pro Israel, which seems to be the one non-negotiable belief of the Republican party. He likely has appeal across the left of middle to middle of right on the spectrum, which is the target. He talks conservative enough to attract Republicans but is big government enough to attract, or at least not discourage, moderates. He speaks more against abortion but the president and vice president are irrelevant to the issue since the Supreme Court has ruled it a fundamental right and this from several Republican controlled courts.
Voted for NDAA… Voted for Tarp, and auto bailouts. Supports the Patriot Act an continued overseas wars.
Oh yeah, color me excited.
Don’t forget the Medicare Prescription Drug Act, the largest increase in socialized medicine prior to Obamacare. The Democrats will falsely claim he is going to end big government. The Republicans will claim the same thing. Both will try to convince their base that he is not his record.

Babyboomers put us in the situation we are at due to big spending. Now that they are getting old they want the younger generations to pay for their SS/Medicare, this does not include the pensions and 401k that most will be getting from their former employment, it’s the typical selfish mentality that they have grow up with. The younger generations are far less than babyboomers, with less jobs and prices going up how in the world can we continue paying for it? I say that if you have retirement savings then you shouldn’t receive SS.
:bigyikes:

Baby Boomers getting OLD??? Ha! Not as long as they have botox, face lifts, hair transplants, and Viagra!

:rotfl:

Yea, those deadbeats that made minimum wage all their life should be ashamed.

Those people who worked to have a home, can sell that home and move to the streets.

What you’re espousing is every person for themselves. That dog won’t hunt in this race.
:amen:

As my friend’s late Sicilian uncle used to say about politicians as he turned off the television: “It’s all-a bulls–t.”
Personally, I believe focusing on just the “politics” is just scratching the surface. I believe there is something deeper and bigger going on that we need to start putting our energy and focus into.

:rotfl: I’m not sure you realize how much some homes are worth nowadays in comparison to what medical bills could add up to. And some can’t afford to just sell their houses and make a move in this environment or not only have medical bills but be homeless too. Their children have concerns too for themselves and their children making ends meet. And charity can’t do it all alone.
Actually, if you look at the data, households in the US own about $16 trillion in real estate and have about $9.7 trillion in mortgage debt. So we still have quite a bit of housing equity in the aggregate, and seniors possess a large share of that equity, which can be used for medical bills.

Republicans do not play race politics
LOL! As in all those Southern whites who suddenly turned Republican when the blacks were franchised?

Ever wonder why black people stick to the Demorats and have no use for the Republicans? (Of course, there are a few like Alan Keyes.)

I like the pick. Paul Ryan is a serious politician, one that hopes to help the country. As both sides of the political isle have mentioned our entitlement programs are broken, heading toward insolvency. Something needs to be done to fix them. Ryan has bravely put together a plan to address the problem. Not all agree with the fixes he has presented. I’m guessing some will demonize him once again as “throwing grandma off the cliff”. That was going to happen anyway to Mitt Romney, as undoubtably Obama’s camp was going to bring up the Paul Ryan plan at some point during the campaign.

Our nations debt problems, run away entitlement costs, will now be even more discussed during the campaign. The GOP has the Ryan plan to address the debt problem, and now selected him for the Vice President slot.

As was recently mentioned by our Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, the Obama administration has not wanted to address the debt issue.

“COMMENTARY on Paul Ryan”

snippet:
…But three years into Obama’s presidency, his economic point man, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, was reduced to telling Ryan the following at a recent House Budget Committee session: “We’re not coming before you to say we have a definitive solution to that long-term [entitlement] problem. What we do know is, we don’t like yours.” Geithner’s favorite aphorism is “plan beats no plan.” Yet here he was admitting that the administration had no plan to avoid a future debt crisis by reforming entitlements, even though the sooner you begin dealing with the problem, the cheaper and easier it is to correct…

Minimum wage was worst case scenario. Many that moved up, didn’t move up to 401ks or elaborate retirements. Then the people who lost money through health, or other tragedies, what about them?

Some ‘unmotivated’ never had other choices, but to work for what they could earn.

What you suggest would put people on the streets, or worse. Does that not bother you in the least? Did Christ teach every person for themselves? Show me where please.
Christ taught us to care for the less fortunate. Christ did not tell us to subsidize the middle class.

So people can give up everything they’ve worked for to have healthcare, if they can’t afford it or their healthcare goes beyond what they can afford, what then? And what about all the money those people paid into the system?

I saw multiple people of colour in the crowd but why does it matter. What has race got do with it? Republicans do not play race politics
Republicans do not play race politics? Is that why there is the current false Romney ad which states Obama has increased welfare without work, leaving out the state waivers provision, which Romney himself has favored? The ad which also states that Obama has negated the Bill Clinton initiative (triggered by Gingrich), which Clinton has denied? And why Gingrich has made it a point of endlessly repeating that Obama is the food-stamp President, which is not even true, when one compares the number of people on food stamps under GWB? No racial overtones, no race politics here?

Healthcare for the aging can devastate one way below ‘middle class’. Christ taught to love one another as He loved us, and He gave everything for us.

This is the myth: In 1964 and 1965, southern Democrats were racist segregationists. 1968, southern democrat racist segregationists became Dixiecrats. By 1980 all Dixiecrats had become racist segregationist southern Republicans.

Truth - most Dixiecrats did not become Republicans. They created the Dixiecrats and then when the civil rights movement accomplished, Dixiecrats returned to the Democrats. Much later, younger Southerners and the thousands of Northerners moved to the South and Republicans began to make gains

Until recently I had no idea how many Catholics were in government.

The Vice President is Catholic, Nancy Pelosi is Catholic, a lot of the governors are Catholic, 6 of the Supreme Court Justices are Catholic.

Wow.
You actually think Pelosi and Biden are Catholic??? lol

They did not pay enough into the system to cover the cost. Today’s current workers just cover the cost of Medicare part A. Part B and Part D (prescription drugs) are heavily subsidized by general tax revenues. In addition, medicaid covers nursing home care for many elderly, which is also paid for out of general tax revenues.

Also, if people are worried about losing everything they’ve worked for, maybe they should buy insurance?

If one is in the middle class, this is not necessarily a permanent thing, unlike the caste system. There is downward as well as upward mobility. Some previously in the middle class have become the working poor. Life doesn’t always work out the way one chooses.

I’m sorry, but you’ll not find the support from seniors for your proposals.

Christ told the man of means to sell all he had and give to the poor and to follow Him. There was no teaching similar to what you propose.
