Political Correctness

There is a difference between hate speech and being politically correct, unless one is so tightly wound that you don’t know the difference.

There are strict laws but I’m not fully versed in them. I will add though that political correctness is on the rise, but more so in the public arena. The Zwarte Piet issue did hit a peak just few years ago.

But you won’t find it on a everyday conversational level. In fact it is completely acceptable to especially trash Christianity, refer to Christians as idiots and morons. This is all being indoctrinated at the university level as a part of a leftist agenda, which means sexual orientation, gender issue is more so off-limits.

It’s perfectly fine to trash Christian here in the US, extra points if they are Catholic. That’s not really considered political incorrectness because it’s the traditionally dominant religion.

Do people speak the same way about Muslims, Jews, etc.?

Jews no (just aren’t many here), Muslims yes though there is a PC backlash against it. Geert Wilders is a controversial Dutch politician that touches upon the subject.

Well, I’m glad that there is at least some consistency.

For some reason, a lot of people in the anglosphere will call you racist for criticizing Islam or Muslims even though it’s not a race.

Some of political correctness is ridiculous, some of it is common courtesy and decorum
This basically sums up my opinion on the concept. As Catholics, we are called to be charitable while sticking to our faith.

Yes. Virtue policing. Because it’s bogus that my saying “Merry Christmas” to someone who takes offense is somehow my fault and I’m meant to be able to read their mind - or just say nothing.

To put it blunt, it’s stupid.
“Christmas Mubarak” … Merry Christmas in Urdu.

The Muslim local people humored me.

Ended up sending out Christmas cards with greetings in many languages.

No, it’s not because Christianity is the dominant religion. It is because Christianity is the most tolerant religion and the world is anti-Christ. You can’t insult the dominant religion anywhere where the dominant religion is not Christianity.

True. I wouldn’t recommend going to Riyadh and start trashing Islam.

I always figured that familiarity breeds contempt. But it certainly helps that Christians don’t blow people up or ram trucks into them.

I’m sure that’s Evangelicals not Catholics.
Frankly, even on CAF, there’s quite of bit of prejudice and hate towards Evangelicals. Not on theology but because of politics.

I guess it depends on what part of the country you’re in. But it is interesting that anti-Catholicism is the one historical American prejudice that is still socially acceptable.

Some of that is due to fundamentalists and prejudices among some Protestants but they aren’t attacking Christians in general. Except for some ‘progressive’ Christians, who in essence side with anti-Christians on practically everything.
Those who attack Christianity attack both Evangelicals and Catholics simply because we hold onto orthodoxy instead of caving into secularism. I should have wrote this instead of the above response.

About the politics, is it American Catholics that seem prejudiced towards Evangelicals or Catholics from other countries?
