“My dad, as you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico … and had he been born of Mexican parents, I’d have a better shot at winning this. But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. He lived there for a number of years. I mean, I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino.”

The Republican presidential nominee’s joke came with a dire warning: “We’re having a much harder time with Hispanic voters, and if the Hispanic voting bloc becomes as committed to the Democrats as the African American voting bloc has in the past,” he said, “why, we’re in trouble as a party and, I think, as a nation.”

John
And yet he must not have thought Marco Rubio would have been as helpful compared to Ryan.

Pro-life Democrats were almost all voted out last election. Thank you, Tea Party. Pick on the most vulnerable.

And party platforms are generally worthless; they certainly aren’t binding.

But Republicans appointing more judges to overturn the mostly Republican-appointed Supreme Court which gave us Roe vs Wade in the first place? Good luck with that.
Given that ya’ll claim the Tea Party is rabid right wing Republicans, I have a hard time understanding how they voted out the pro-life Democrats. The fact is that the party abandoned them long ago to curry favor with the abortion lobby and big feminism. The pro life movement supports the Republican party because the Democrat party has become virtually 100% pro abortion. Did you watch the Convention? It was an abortion celebration. It seemed every speaker from Cecile Richards to some minor league Congressional candidate trumpeted their support for abortion. Now they’ve even extended it to the idea of taxpayer funded abortion “regardless of ability to pay…” Remember that.

Anyone who claims to be pro life and also a commited Democrat is deluding themselves. Pick one and I hope you choose life over party.

A problem with this Ishii is your party no longer has a center. It is far right extreme. Look at Romney. He never has moved to the center for the general. Still pandering to the far right and Tea Party in fear of losing their support. This is why I’m not convinced that Romney if elected will govern from the center. He’ll be too afraid of upsetting the Tea Party and far right and will fear a primary challenge in 16 or loss of just enough of his base to cost him a 2nd term if he is even elected to a 1st.

OTOH this is why those who speak of Obama having a Democratic controlled Congress early in his 1st term miss the point. As another poster said, Obama made the left unhappy at times in his first term either for being more centrist or moving too slowly. Besides the Senate 60-vote threshhold allowing minority Republicans to block bills, one of the reasons for instance the country did not have single payer on the table nor even a public option in the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare is because centrist and conservative Democrats and liberal Democrats don’t always agree.

IOW a bigger tent. But it does seem united now for this election. God bless and peace.
Only socialists view the GOP as “far right.” When you have decided that the government’s role is to provide basic needs to the people, then you are so far from the ideals this country was built on, that anything less than cradle-to-grave government looks “extreme.”

He’s also a former Democrat who “converted” to Republican after meeting George Bush with whom he developed a personal friendship. He quit the McCain campaign because he didn’t want to criticize Obama. He describes himself as a Progressive and founded an organization called “No Labels” because he does not want to affiliate with any party.

So calling him a Republican is uh…very generous? But if it feeds into someone’s narrative about what the Republican party should be (squishy) so be it. I am sure it will receive praise and honors from the Left.

Lisa
Calling Al Moritz’ post “very generous” is very generous of you. 😃

Do you think you’re the only person who’s experienced a room without air controls?

While you’re busy posting on here and supporting Obama, American taxpayers who paid for the illegal democrat-induced war you participated in are now paying for your veterans benefits.

Meanwhile, the left wants to make our military useless, cut us down to size so that we can feel what’s it like and they were the ones who spit on your and your pals when they came home.

Today in some places they pretty much shred the ballots of our boys and girls abroad to help their cronies get re-elected.

Even if you were drafted, tell me:

Did you serve so that moochers and anti-American, God-hating secularists could cut this country down to size?

If serving in the war has been detrimental to you, then you need to seek medical assistance, and** I’m sure you’ll get leaps and bounds of support on here regardless of your political views,** but know this:

I am not going to sit here and let people wave his/her military service around as an excuse or a credential to screw up my country. That same standard applies even to my family and friend.

Thank you for your service.
“The left wants to make our military useless…” Really? Maybe you’re thinking of the libertarians. There have been more drone attacks under the Obama administration than under the previous Bush administration. Further, the military had been ill-equipped in Iraq under Bush and Rumsfeld, but not under Obama. If anything, the Democrats with Obama in charge are too hawkish. The old Republican notion of patriotism and a strong military doesn’t play too well anymore. It did once when Reagan was in charge, but not now. However, intelligence in foreign policy is another matter, and Obama can rightly be criticized for that; but Romney so far doesn’t sound too promising in that arena, and that’s putting it mildly.

There is a great deal more in that tape than the 47% comment…how about his comments on Latinos and blacks? I think the analysis is correct…it shows a deeply cynical man playing to his audience in some very offensive ways.

John
The “secret video” was held for 4 months, so it could be released closer to the election. This is nothing but pure politics. I’m not worried though. I think the majority see right through it and recognize what Romney meant and agree with it.

I still say a serious issue is these wretched low life scum bags who do these ‘secret videos and pictures’ (eg Michael Phelps, Prince Harry and Kate, etc.) I don’t condone vigilantiasm but I do believe in a high degree of self governance. People shouldn’t do this stuff becuase they should know better, they should know that everyone would consider them scum bag prostitute sellouts. We should collectively as a society have that type of intimidation to suppress bad behavior )and conversely condone good behavior). Our moral compass is spinning out of control…

Think Sonny in the Godfather, although that didn’t work out so well…

Third, thanks for your thanks for my service, don’t bother,
?
when I got home I was greeted with signs saying sailors and dogs keep off the grass.
I wasn’t around then. Missed me by about 15 years.

But, those same people are around. They’re called democrats. You know, the ones you’re defending on here while they find new ways to demonize you.
I am truely sorry for you,
I highly doubt it.
In fact, just because you can write this trash, you need to thank a vet!!!
I just did and wasn’t I told** “don’t bother” **by you?

The thing to understand about certain elements of the R establishment is that they are in it for their own power and selves and if they have to vote for Obama to keep it, they will.

Sidenote: These folks are part of “the poor” that all the liberal posters on here are so determined to help (whether they want to or not) that private charity just can’t cut

I remember looking at exit polls showing that Reagen got 96% of the base in 1984, but what really stood out to me was the 3-4% that voted for Mondale. I mean, Mondale was so transparent about his taxation agenda and he was pretty hard left on the issues…how could ANY republican benefit? Especially after everything Reagen did to turn that economy around, kill inflation and put our enemies on their heels?

Then Rush Limbaugh recently put it brilliantly:

Some in the RNC will vote democrat if it means saving themselves and their own positions.

There’s little doubt in my mind that the MSM has a rolodex of establishment republicans they can go to and call up for interviews to offer criticism on things like the TEA PARTY or any semblance of real reform because, goodness forbid, someone is going to lose their government goodies, and the media and the left has these RNC personalities convinced that if any shred of that happens, independents and Reagen democrats will flee and the left will take over everything.

Agreed. However, that said, I think both campaigns should allow press into their campaign meetings. There is no reason to make them “secret” events. Full disclosure is better.

My point Cmatt was to show that because America is still a center-right country ( I think), the conservative Republican canidadate has a natural advantage. Reagan was pretty conservative - he challenged Ford from the right in 1976 and beat the centrist Bush in 1980. What you’re forgetting when you accuse the GOP of being “far right” is that the economic/fiscal situation has become more dire. Medicare and SS are threatened - doing business as usual won’t work anymore. And you are also forgetting what helped bring the tea party into existence, which was Republicans That Act Like Democrats. Bush was a big spender, e.g. also Obama, in as much as you say he’s a centrist for not ramming down our throats a single payer system, did bring us much closer to that eventuality by passing Obamacare. He is an unabashed proponent of “income redistribution.” He’s a leftist.

But the biggest mistake you make, Cmatt, is in not understanding the incremental approach to bringing about a Euro-style socialist state. It is a gradual process - the left, and Obama know that to do what you would like - ram single payer, socialized medicine down our throats - would be to invite a huge backlash - bigger than the one in 2010! So, since they are incrementally installing their programs, you say " see, they are not leftists, but centrists." This last point I have been making to you for a while, Cmatt, but you have never really answered it. Why?

Yes - transparency is good but it is still voluntary at private functions. The better part of valor is discretion. That one seems to have been tossed aside… People need to be able to “let their hair down” when in a setting of (what they believe are) like minded confidants.

There’s no question that if certain parts of the R party don’t wake up from thinking its 1952 (in the demographic sense only), the party is doomed.

But by the same token if the democrat field organization loses out on voter fraud and on the notion that the straight, successful able-bodied white man of Nordic/Gaul/Anglo-Saxon descent has fixed the system against all else, then its big-time trouble for the D’s.

It really is amazing at how dense the Rs are at demographics and and the Ds at voting bloc trends. Some of the political class really are out of touch.

But I don’t think that Hispanics will vote in perpetuity against republicans like African Americans currently are. Neither will Asians, Arabs, East Indians or Native Americans. A lot of those folks are conservative small business owners.

Romney should be able to get at least 43% of the non-Black minority vote.

For you and all the other hard-right-wingers here who still cannot get out of their insulated bubble and face reality:

The right’s many attacks on Mitt Romney:

dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=3EF9C70C-59D1-4337-B28E-25DA46E22C7C

Wow.

So, let’s see how this works. The claim is that 47% of American are dependent upon government, are victims, doesn’t take responsibility, believe themselves entitled to health care, food, housing etc. Now, the number 47% refers to federal income tax. How does not paying federal income tax imply those things? It doesn’t. Nice logical fallacy, Mitt.

Actually, most of those 47% work (paying payroll tax), but are given exemptions and breaks that were largerly endorsed by Republicans. So, not only making logical fallacies, but deriding the expected and intented results of Republican policies. Great job shooting yourself in the foot there, Mitt.

But what about the people voting for you, Mitt? Oh, would you look at that. The red states, where your support is greatest, receive the highest amounts of government handouts, exemptions and breaks. The elderly and disabled, good old Republicans still loyal to the party, getting handouts like medical care so they can survive another day. What are they, do you say? Dependent victims that don’t take responsibility for their own lives. Nice going spitting your supporters in the face there, Mitt.

What a joke. Mitt Romney should be ashamed of himself.

Undeniably, government dependency is out of control. It’s not like Romney said “you didn’t build that” or call for the redistribution of income let alone vote for things like Infanticide. Romney didn’t do anything too shameful.

Bill Krystol, Republican strategist and Fox News contributor:

"It’s worth recalling that a good chunk of the 47 percent who don’t pay income taxes are Romney supporters—especially of course seniors (who might well “believe they are entitled to heath care,” a position Romney agrees with), as well as many lower-income Americans (including men and women serving in the military) who think conservative policies are better for the country even if they’re not getting a tax cut under the Romney plan. So Romney seems to have contempt not just for the Democrats who oppose him, but for tens of millions who intend to vote for him.

It remains important for the country that Romney wins in November (unless he chooses to step down and we get the Ryan-Rubio ticket we deserve!). But that shouldn’t blind us to the fact that Romney’s comments, like those of Obama four years ago, are stupid and arrogant."

*My husband and I are, I believe, one of those 47% who struggle to stay off of Government assistance. It is a constant struggle in todays economy. We would so love an economy that offers us an Honest days work for an Honest pay verses having to depend on government hand outs…This is the main difference that I see between what Gov. Romney and Paul Ryan are offering verses what President Obama is offering…
The President just wants to keep giving me something for nothing while Gov. Romney wants to help me earn it and at the same time get better take home pay…He wants to help people stop being dependent on the government and to help us take care of ourselves and each other…so even though we are one of the 47% as it stands right now we will be voting for Gov Romney and Paul Ryan no matter how anyone tries to demonize what he is trying to do…

As always just my two cents…hope it makes some sense*

I also think Romney was implying something about 47% of the people might not connect with his tax plan because they don’t pay taxes.

Also, folks, please let’s not forget the rest of this story. Aren’t they saying they found the tape and 2+ minutes are missing?? I don’t know this whole story well because it may not merit all that much attention. What a surprise, a politician is not easily understood in something he says or misspeaks. Happens to all of us.

And yes, I’m one of those who gets a refund usually when I pay taxes as well.

A refund simply means that you gave the government a no interest loan. Now, if you pay no federal taxes, if your tax liability is zero, that is a different story. But to get a refund is meaningless.
