Thank God for you.

Not everyone gets the same breaks in life.

I know women working at MacDonalds part time for $8. Without food stamps and rent assistance, they’d be homeless and starving.

Jim
That’s quite an ignorant statement. What break did my mom have? That she had to raise three boys alone? That her youngest was born with a birth defect that required several surgeries? Yep. Lucky, she was…

Your mom probably had a far better economy to work in than many single mother’s today have.

Imagine yourself with two kids, and you just lost your job because the company moved to China.

Now, your unemployment ran out and you still can’t find work.

What would you do?

Jim
I’m not going to play your hypothetical games. There are too many factors involved and to many different solutions. I’m sure whatever I answer, you will say, “well, not everyone has ________.”

My family has adapted to layoffs and financial hardships. My sister-in-law is going through worse than you describe right now. She is moving, relying on Church and family, etc.

Jim wasn’t saying your mother was lucky for having being stuck alone or with a disabled child. He gave his example as that your mothers era most likely wasn’t how ours is today or was a few years ago. Which I agree with all his statements. Like you said she had a job some of us have applied everywhere and even Mc donalds wouldn’t accept us because of no food service back ground. (true story). Sometimes there is just no work. You said your sister in law is going through heck right now I’m sure it’s as bad as I was going through. She should get on assistance she needs it right now. You said shes moving and depending on church and family. See there’s another thing. Some of us have NO family at all. None, because of being adopted to an eldery couple who have now passed and who had no other children. Your angry because Jim isn’t considering your mother a hero although she is, she raised her babies and did it with no spouse and had a disabled child to take care of. That makes her a hero not becasue she was on aid or not.

I’m not angry, I’m just not going to play his game. The fact you said my sister-in-law should “get on assistance” when I said she is relying on family, friends and Church is example #1 of what is wrong with our country.

Oh, and thanks for filling in Jim’s “not everyone has” blank exactly as I predicted. Now, he won’t have to do it. 👍

Btw…your scenario is almost identical to one of my salesman’s background. No experience required in car sales, so he made the best of his situation. I’m sorry for your experience and I don’t deny that some people have a tougher time than others.

I’ve also never claimed that there shouldn’t be a safety net to help those in need. All I’ve said is that Romney’s call for providing some daycare, so welfare mothers could have the dignity to work is not hypocritical. I’m wholly against increasing the Welfare State for mothers to stay at home with their children. It is contrary to human dignity.

That’s your opinion and I respect that. But you seem to come down hardest on the least of our brethren. I don’t feel Romney has a clue as to what the middle class struggles with, let alone those who fall between the cracks. He still claims his dog loved riding on the roof. Seamus’s reaction was not one of pure joy as far as this dog lover perceives.

I do? Show me where.

Look at the context of Ann Romney’s comments

Yes I love we’re talking too about the challenges of women less fortunate than Ann Romney and I was glad she wasn’t actually offended and that must also mean there isn’t an Obama war on moms if she’s counting it as a birthday present. 👍 Another part of the interview which troubled me more though was what seemed to be a lack of humility to me on the Romneys part when, since we’re talking about entitlements, Mitt told the Constitutionally elected President of the United States of America to pack his bags. And Ann informing Amerca it’s Mitt’s and her time now as if they somehow are entitled before anyone has voted.

:rotfl: That’s quite a stretch CMatt. :rotfl:

Indeed. I never said they did. Are there any more “not everyone has” blanks you’d like to fill in. We could go days with that one.
You seem to be mocking us… Why?. I am just wondering because my husband pointed it out. He asked me why people keep bashing each other harshly if this is a catholic site.

I am new to the site and already was shocked to some of the hurtful comments made to each other. If we are all of God and believe in him and love each other why are we bashing each other? Isn’t there a nicer way to say “I do not agree” and explain why then to make people feel hurt?. I’ve already felt hurt already to some of the comments everyone has made to each others comments. I’m just curious because I would expect this from non believers of God but not from a catholic site. I came here because I wanted help in my growth of being a catholic to know what God would want of me from other catholics.

As far as the welfare topic goes, God is love shouldn’t we be caring about each other and helping each other survive in this world? not make them feel like they can’t accept help or that they are worth less then someone else for accepting help? I hardly think God will tell me at the gates of heaven that I am better to enter then my neighbor because he accepted food stamps. I just don’t see how God would want us mocking each other or making others feel low or not as good as the next person. God is not of being prideful. That used to be one of my biggest problems. I have learned not to be prideful. I have learned to love everyone and have compassion for everyone.

I don’t know, maybe I’m confused as what this site really is.

There is a lot of rudeness on this site. You can see that one of the threads can no longer be posted on because posters couldn’t be civil. One has to determine whether iy is better to respond or step away on a case-by-case basis.

I’m sorry you feel that way. It is not my intent. If you are judging CAF and it’s participants based on a few posts in one thread in the News fora, you will have a skewed view. I hope you stick around.

When it comes to welfare, the Church teaches that the Welfare State is a not a good thing. While I believe in a safety net, I don’t believe the net should be too big, nor do I believe it is best handled from the federal level. If people feel some shame for being on the public dole, I view that as a good thing. They certainly shouldn’t hate themselves, but they shouldn’t be comfortable living off the fruits of other people’s labor.

Now, receiving the loving charity of the Church, family and friends? That is a different thing.

See, this where I’ll strongly disagree with you. There are and always have been people who work their tails off, get as much work as they can…and just can’t take in enough money. I’ll go back to my great-grandmother-what more was she supposed to be doing? She was doing all the work she could, and there just wasn’t enough to keep the house warm and food on the table.

Why should she have felt ashamed?

She was a remarkable woman, no doubt-but she wasn’t a unique woman. Her story is not all that uncommon. She was working harder than a lot of people who weren’t on relief (and that’s not meant to be an insult to anyone, but she cleaned movie theaters for a living; it wasn’t the most comfortable or pleasant of jobs).

You could have put anyone in her shoes, or the shoes of an Okie fleeing the Dust Bowl, or the shoes of a migrant apple-picker today…and they’d still end up on relief for at least a time. How can you ask people to be ashamed when they do all they can?

If anything, it is those who have who should be ashamed that such poverty is continued to be allowed to persist in our society; the most ashamed I’ve ever been was about five years ago seeing homeless men sleeping by heating vents on a December night in downtown Washington D.C.; the capital of the most powerful nation the world has ever seen and there’s still men without a warm place to sleep on a cold night.

What does that have to do with the welfare state?

As someone that spent a lot of time with my children going to work would be a relief  Looking after children is hard work a lot of the time & the parents have to pay for baby minders which swallows up a lot of their income.

The dignity of work ? what about the dignity of not separating a child from it’s mother for long hours ? I think it’s one of the reasons society has went down the plug-hole with both parents away from their children for long hours.

I know he’s on about people on welfare, but if one partner was paid a decent wage maybe one income would suffice, and if we didn’t live beyond our means.
THAT right there should be the moral of this whole story.

My goodness, Matt. I thought you were well versed on campaigns and elections. This kind of statement comes up every time we have an election. I remember the Dems telling Republicans to pack. Lighten up.🙂

What does that have to do with the welfare state?
Nothing, of course. I broke a cardinal rule for liberals by even mentioning the idea of a little shame being a good thing. It would hurt someone’s self-esteem to feel that way. They may never recover.

That’s quite an ignorant statement. What break did my mom have? That she had to raise three boys alone? That her youngest was born with a birth defect that required several surgeries? Yep. Lucky, she was…
Your mom had the break of having a job that she could support her family on, in an economic time that was better than what we have now.

As far as ignorance goes, I know the women working at McDonald’s that I mentioned.

Do you or are you ignorant of such people? 😛

Jim

I know and work with people in many, many difficult situations. I’m not playing along, so you will have to continue your game alone.
