Fine. Let’s talk about how the Dems blocked anti-lynching bills, how KKK was Dem, how ot was Dems who promulgated Jim Crow laws…
In the late 19th/early 20th centuries… Wouldn’t it be more relevant to talk about the Democratic Party today? Or even over the past 80 years…

Once people start to believe they have all the facts needed and don’t need work on anything, that’s an illusion.
Just because people used to be or even are still unaware of certain things doesn’t mean an exaggerated formulation with a lot of baggage attached is correct.
Most of us aren’t fully aware of the genesis of white supremacy (scientific racism coming out of the Age of Enlightenment) but what we do know is that it was an exaggerated formulation that went on to fuel dreadful genocides. It was never going to be a principle that was easy to correct bar radical means cleansing multiple generations.

Out of curiosity, since you implied personal guilt here, how much have you paid in reparations?

I support use of my taxes to that end. My penance involves defending against the racism that happens everyday still and praying for the victims, and also the perpetrators. I would love to see the movement at St Xavier’s take off in all Christian Masses and services.

Why not just freely give your money? Why wait for taxes?

I do that as well. I don’t walk past anyone in want especially on the streets of NYC.

Sure, if you like the profanity of it, the desecration of the altar, and the abuse of the holy.

Sad to say but one mans ‘profanity’, ‘desecration’ and ‘abuse’, is anothers love, compassion and commitment to racial equality and justice.

This again is the Holy sacrament of the mass and really, it is not a time to get political
Why is this political? I thought neither party supported racism.
It is politicl because "white privilege " is a political term. Does Jesus talk about white privilege?

Again repeating myself. The mass is the Holy sacrament of the Catholic Church. Do you realize that? The liturgy is very important.
And yet, Cardinal Dolan has not cited him for liturgical abuse. And it’s certainly not up to us to make that call for him.
I don’t think Cardinal Doln wants to get involved in every liturgical abuse but he may talk quietly to the priest.

I’ll start

a vote for a democrat supports more than just abortion.

by voting for a Democrat, you enable the entire LGBT agenda, euthanasia, embryonic
stem cell research, transgenderism, identity politics, the destruction of the family, contraception, socialism, breaking the seal of the confession, federal funds to pay for abortions, forced abortions in Catholic hospitals, the selection of liberal judges who will uphold these policies, paying for abortions around the world, etc

I have seen a lot of announcements added to the end of the Mass that were mundane, even silly. I do not see where a prayer for racial justice would be worse than a sports update, if the parish was in need of this. Again, this priest was not making a national broadcast. He was addressing his parishioners.
Yes once the altar has been cleared and the last blessing has been given, the priest may make a public announcement but it is usually in regard to somethin taken place such as there are cupcakes for sale in the back of the Church to to benefit the CYO

Very rarely do priest even make announcements at the end of mass and they are usually short and to the point.

This priest was using his position to take on a political charged issue “white privilege”. He should be reprimanded because he now has divided his Church followers. Look at this thread and how many posts over one priest .

Has he? Priests should not even have followers. Is there evidence his parish is divided?

Publicly.

You are right. We do not know what Cardinal Dolan thinks. However, it is he who gets to decide if this needs addressing, if it is an abuse, if it is imprudent, etc. At least he is familiar with the parish, something we lack.

Yes he has. Look at this thread, how many posts. He is a priest and his role as a priest to save souls not create division. I hope that his parishioners blew a lot of what he said off but there are many on this thread who have said they would walk out. That is not a good thing.

He chose to disregard the liturgical rules and create his own version of the liturgy.

I am not from his parish. Are you? No one here has said they are a part of his faith community.

This is the very reason why the Catholic Church follows the principle of subsidiarity. It is not possible to judge what is best for a parish over the internet, by looking at snippets and listening to talking heads. Has anyone here even taken the time to go back and explore where his parish is, what his sermons are like, etc., besides me?

He may be imprudent. I do not know. But I do know people here are not representative of Catholics that I know. So it is likely that you may not represent this parish.

I was writing in response to the comment made by ConcernedAmerican.

It does not matter if I am from his Church. I have been to many church services in New York City and none have been like this. Still, that is unimportant. All Catholic Churches follow a certain rubrics for the liturgy.

In the past and in the future, he may have done great homilies or will do great homilies and maybe a great pastor but this time he failed. Whether people here are representative of the Catholics you know is not important either. The mass is a sacrament in the Church where the wine and bread are changed into the body and blood of Christ. Every Catholic Church in the world does this same liturgy.

I will simply have to disagree. The Church operates by subsidiarity.

There are two issues, and you just switched again. The first is whether what was said was divisive. The second is whether it is illicit. The first one, it is my belief, cannot be adjudged over the internet. The second is a matter for the bishop.

I assume everyone knows this was done at the end, right? I went to a parish once where they said the St. Michael prayer at the end of Mass, not after the recession. So, I know something like this happened at least once.

People on this thread certainly see it as divisive if they would have walked out of Church.

It was not done at the end. It was after communion and prior to the final blessing not after the mass.

On a rare occasion, a Catholic prayer such as the Saint Michael prayer will be said. That is not what this priest did. Cardinal Dolan may have spoken to him, we will not know.

I would encourage anyone who wants to know the truth of this to go to the Church’s website. It is interesting. For one thing, communion is not distributed during Mass, but after as people recess. I do not know what legal restrictions they face.

One poster stated it was after communion. I will look at the mass. What recess? Why would communion not be distributed during the normal mass?

But so is “abortion”. Jesus didn’t talk about abortion either.

As someone earlier in the thread said, I’m not a liturgy scholar, just a life long Mass attender. I’ve been part of the pledge for recommitment to end abortion at prolife Masses. Pledges of solidarity with victims of genocides, with refugees and with persecuted Christians, that have occurred in my world during my lifetime. All cases dripping in politics.

Hand on heart I’ve never heard of post Mass push back against such causes. It is new to me and doesn’t fit in my Catholic soul.
