The Catholic faith defines what heresy and what a heretic is. That isn’t my opinion but a teaching of the faith. It is my right to speak the truth and in fact it is my duty. If one is a heretic then its no longer just an opinion but fact.

Secondly, many people throw that word around on this forum like a spear. If somebody doesn’t agree with a particular teaching, some here automatically feel they are guilty of heresy. We have a lot of “unofficial” judges that hang out on this forum. I assure you, God doesn’t need any help, and he may be taking note of folks who try to assume that role for him.

If you feel these folks are wrong, fine, but don’t start throwing accusations around, pray for them instead. It may help them, and it puts you in a better light as well.

God doesn’t need help but he has commanded us to spread the faith. Part of that is to admonish the sinner and instruct the ignorant.
 
I’m gonna bow out of this discussion as I have strong feelings being a new convert, and seeing someone that I held in high regard trivially treat his faith like Sean did for show ratings sickens me.

Maybe Sean didn’t get the memo?

I agree with lovingly showing the way home. But with due respect, if people are not told the truth–even if it isn’t what they want to hear–they aren’t even going to be able to take the first step toward home.

How can you stop doing wrong if nobody tells you it’s wrong in the first place? Why would you stop doing something that is wrong if you think you’re right?

Too many people equate being told, “this action is problematic for this reason” with “you are a stupid fool for doing this so stop or you’re going to hell”.

Obviously people who really said the latter (even if it is true in the final analysis one cannot be sure of the state of the soul of the person who is ‘doing’ the wrong and so we cannot judge)could have phrased truth in a more Christ like matter.

But. . .it is far more often the case that people hear the former kind and gentle words from their friends and family, but being human, becoming defensive, will internalize that what was said, or was ‘meant’ was the latter. This is certainly sad, but it is not the fault of those who tell the truth. . .it rests most squarely on the shoulders of those who choose not to listen to truth but to persist in wrongdoing, in putting their thoughts, and their desires, and their ‘reason’ above that of Almighty God.

We cannot allow this state of affairs to go on much longer. In the name of ‘tolerance’ Christians are being so muzzled by the ‘idea’ that, if a person screams, “you’re hateful for saying this”, well, then, you had better not say another word lest feelings be hurt. The greatest sin today is to 'hurt someone’s feelings through intolerantly claiming that what they do is ‘wrong’. Don’t you know it might not be ‘wrong for them?’:rolleyes:

All I can do is shake my head. :nope:

There is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Instead of finger pointing and feeling it’s your personal responsiblity to admonish and instruct, just try living your faith and provide a good example for others to see. Telling people they are heretics and giving admonishments does not accomplish much except make people angry.

Think about what your goal is. Is it to help people understand the Catholic faith and bring them closer to God through kindness and example, or is it to shame and put down those who either disagree or don’t understand the Church? If it’s the latter, then you are liable to run off more than you bring in. This is the tactic that priest used with Sean. Didn’t work too well did it?

Think about it.

Calling somebody a heretic and trying to shame them publically isn’t the way to accomplish it. Sorry.

The most loving thing that Fr. Euteneuer could have done was to publically correct and admonish Sean Hannity for his very public, heretical and scandalous views as a self-proclaimed Catholic. Fr. Euteneuer all but pointed out to Sean hannity the way home to faithfulness and unity with the Church. We all saw the self-indignant, rude and defensive posturing by this self-relishing public commentator. This mantra stream of Fr. Euteneuer not being “loving” is a misnomer of what true love is.

I agree with both. It seems every hypersenstive person is justified in sin by simply claiming the truth teller is mean or uncharitable.
 
not to mention how many times Fr E asked Sean to “be honest”

and he should have been reminded to be fair and balanced too,.

Interesting how the tables get turned to where the primary focus of concern is on how folks are offended by the truth than in how the truth is offended.

That’s why Sean Hannity should not be constantly portraying himself as a knowledgable and devoute Catholic when he so obviously is not. If 96% think he is right then someone needs to tell those 96% he is not.
