The poor Archbishop is in a state of shock:

Williams ‘shocked’ at Sharia row

All this is very silly when religious courts are already in use in Britain:

Religious courts already in use
By Nick Tarry
BBC News
It seems odd to me that a country can have one court for religious people-even Jewish- and one for secular citizens. Wouldn’t this eventually cause chaos? Can any religion get its own court system in Britain?

’Resign,’ clergy tell Archbishop of Canterbury
Call for Williams to quit part of backlash over sharia comments

A senior clergyman in the Church of England is calling for the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, because of his comments promoting Islamic sharia law in Britain.

The comments were reported by the Times Online, which said the reaction from the “long-standing member of the church’s governing body, the General Synod,” was just a part of the backlash against Williams over his comments.

WND has reported that Williams, chief of the 70-million strong worldwide Anglican Communion, has advocated for establishment of Islamic law, drawing a rebuke from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, among others.

what a little girl. anglicanism is a disgrace.

To be frank The Archbishop should resign. A form of Sharia law akin to the Beth Din (the Jewish courts in the UK ) would be one thing, but looking at the blogs today, the effect of what he has said is to offer encourament to those who are simply interested in taking over and imposing their own views on the UK. If his idiotic speech has a positive it is that he has finally woken up the non-Muslim UK - even more effectively than Muslim bombs. I speak as a former member of his church who converted to RC, Thank goodness I converted!

What happens if the Shari’a imposes a death penalty? (Public stoning, for example.)

Can the relatives then have the Shari’a tried for murder under British law?

The Beth Din has been around for a long time. They deal with orthodox Jews who consent to their use. Divorces still have to be formalised by the state even if recognised by the Beth Din. Re “Can any religion get its own court in the UK?” Apparently not!
(See huge furore in UK (prior to imminent resignation of certain person)

They can’t actually do that yet! (though most of us seem to be under impression that it is only a matter of time.), I think Archbishop envisaged Muslims dealing with own minor civil disputes rather than stoning apostates and adulterers to death in provincial towns.

Incidently St Paul advised Christians to settle their own differences before going to court.

Come to think of it maybe stoning to death not entirely stupid (where are you Archbishop?)

Shari’a Law is not for “minor disputes.” It’s kind of like the Ten Commandments: it’s all of those things that are considered gravely sinful by Muslims, that take either the death penalty or the chopping of limbs. Now, to our Western Christian eyes, the items on the list may seem minor - the wearing of beards (mandatory for adult men) and the flying of kites (forbidden) and of course the famous burkha, which is required for women - these things seem absolutely trivial, to us, but the penalties under Shari’a law are quite severe.

If one has Jewish courts for Jewish marriages, and Muslim courts for Muslim marriages, isn’tit time that the diocesan tribunals become law for Catholic marriages?

Archbishop, with sharia it’s all or nothing

“But in a way, he is right. Sharia does not “demand” domination; it assumes it. The law of Islam is radically different from the law of Judaism, which is the law of a minority that accepts the authority of the majority, non-Jewish state. Islam, like Christianity, is a religion of conversion. Its sharia, unlike the teachings of Christianity, is a programme of law to be turned into a political reality, if possible everywhere.”

I think that is what Archbishiop was trying to say in ham-fisted way.
ie some king of devolution to religions from state.

These were interesting points from the above article.
  • **Men get a presumption when it comes to custody (it should be an issue of best interest of child). **
  • **Child support ends after three months (it should be as in US law where children “share in the good fortunes” of their divorced parents). **
  • **Boys get more in inheritance than girls (should be equal). **
  • **Men get bulk of marital assets (should be equitable distribution). **
  • **Apostasy automatically ends the marriage (yeah, I’m sure this one won’t be abused by evil in-laws). Think of how easily Muslims accuse one another of kufr. **
  • **In a divorce, a parent revealed to be (or more likely accused to be) a homosexual has no claim over the child (”your dad’s a fag, kid, you are fatherless!”). I mean, jilted women have never been known to demonize their exes like this. **
  • **A man can divorce in one sitting but a woman needs the permission of a religious authority. **
  • **This list is endless, please feel free to add to it. **

I still would like to know how this would work and not be chaotic.

Why must a Muslim man have a beard?

Why must a Muslim man have a beard?
Because it’s Shari’a law … 🤷

I have no idea what the reason is, but they receive the death penalty for shaving it off, or for not growing one. It can’t be a little one, either - it has to cover the whole lower part of the face, and be at least one fist in length (about four inches) below the chin.

This man is a disgrace! How can the Anglican church tolerate him? I guess there’s nothing they can do about it, though. I grieve for our mother country.
That’s right Archbishop - just roll out the red carpet and prepare for the future arrival of the antichrist.
I think the Arch Bishop is only advocating that Muslims have the same rights as Jewish people in the UK who can choose to use the Beth Din? He sees it as promoting the rights of faith in general against the secular world?

RIIIIGHT… as per usual I think the media took it out of context before it even hit our ears. We must remember he’s prepared a great paper upon this, so it’s more complexed than the headline that’s hit our papers.

I do believe that England should keep its Englishness, but now I may seem to contradict my self by saying that I also believe in equal rights. This is why: WE would be and frequently are outraged if Christians are persecuted under other religious laws eg. Sharia law in an Islamic country. We expect (to a sensible degree) for our faiths to be able to lived out where ever we are. So to should Muslims expect the same. Some Sharia law should be allowed, for consenting Muslims just as is possible for the Jewish.

I am Anglican, and I’m desperate to get a chance to read his papers… or at least do more research on the matter than I have been able to; I don’t think we can really flame the Archbishop since he does have some very good points… in the end of the day, only one ultimate will can win anyway.

Christians are taught compassion, love and care, this has to extend outside of our faiths.

Who cares what the Arch Bishop says? Nobody ever listened to him before! Anyway, he is from the Church of England, headed by the Royal family. The same royal family that has a law that does not allow Catholics to be in it. I have less respect for the Royal family and anything it heads up than I do for an earthworm. It is against the law for Catholics to be royal and for Catholics to be prime minister in England. Of course, they don’t have such laws against other religions as far as I know.
