Some Christians Still Denounce Harry Potter as Dangerous

There is no evidence whatsoever that reading HP makes one very likely to dabble in the occult.
Agreed. Possible? Yes, of course. Some kids develop a fascination with the spells and witchcraft. This is where parents are supposed to come in and guide them. My kids have not fallen for such nonsense because their consciences are being properly formed.

I can see the sarcasm dripping above.

But I fail to see anything diabolical in the above merchandise.

At any rate, one can certainly allow one’s children to read the books without going into a frenzy buying the above items.

No. That is a logically invalid argument. It is possible that HP could lead some kids to dabble in the occult and not lead other kids to dabble in the occult. There is no reason to believe that a cause results in the same effect 100% of the time.

For example: sending a text while driving is a cause of car accidents; however, not every text while driving results in a car accident.
Very true rlg, also, not every person that reads the Bible becomes a Christian. However, as Christians, whether Catholic or otherwise, we should be guided by the Scriptures viz.:
“**There shall not be found among you **any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, (11) Or a charmer, or consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. (12) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord:.” (Deuteronomy 18:10 -12 ). Plus it needs to be pointed out that modern Wicca pushes the idea that there are two types of Witches, i.e the white witches that practice “harmless” white magic, and those witches that practice evil black magic.A bit like Darth Vader of “Star Wars” going over to the Dark Side. It needs to be explained to these kids that ALL magic is evil, and that there is no such thing as a GOOD WITCH.

The supposed magic of the books I can give or take. I get no more excited about that than the witches in the Wizard of Oz.

But having the supposed hero of a book use torture as a means of revenge and not experience either remorse, or recieve due punishment, means it is not a book I would recommend for children.

Well obviously if it’s from a sound orthodox catholic perspective that would be fine :)…if its taken by a new age nun or Richard McBrien/Matthew Fox then it would be more

Why’s she taking it? Is she into prayer ministry? Just seems quite unusual
It’s part of her program. I think (don’t quote me on it. I’m an engineering student, I honestly don’t know anything about how humanities students have to structure their schedules or how many credits they need in certain areas or something. In engineering, we have a list of courses and we’re told to take them and even which semesters).
I wish I could help my brothers and sisters in Christ see the damage that these books and movies have done to our culture. Lenin - yeah that communist guy - once said, “Give me one generation and I will change the world.” Hasn’t this generation of kids been greatly affected by all this Harry Potter mania, and in a negative way?
Yes, damn those kids and their new fangled obsession with reading!

(FYI, this would also include me, as I wasn’t much of a reader until I read HP)
Are there kids who read CAF and then dabble in the occult as a result of doing that reading? VERY UNLIKELY.

Are there kids who read Scripture and then dabble in the occult as a result of doing that reading? VERY UNLIKELY.

Are there kids who read newspapers and then dabble in the occult as a result of doing that reading? VERY UNLIKELY.

Are there kids who read Harry Potter and dabble in the occult as a result of doing that reading? VERY LIKELY.
[citation needed] (and yes, I am being serious. I did call for a logical debate, and I get real sick of the unsupported conjecture that goes on).
**Questions for all:

Do you believe the Devil exists?

Do you believe Demons exist?

If you believe in either: do you believe that the Devil/Demons have the ability to tempt people away from Christ and towards bad actions?**
Oh oh! I know! Let’s throw some loaded questions out and we’ll call that debate. :banghead:

You’re creating a false dichotomy, and a pretty obvious one at that. People can believe in all 3 and also believe that HP is not satanic. They’re not mutually exclusive.
I don’t think some of the movies are a problem as they are clearly fantasy type things and action movies, but I began reading the books, and they definitely emphasize occult type things and take it for granted that these things (spells, etc.) are okay. I was amused to see that “dark magic” is forbidden, where all of the magic things they are learning are definitely not okay.

Now, if she had written these books as children learning to be magicians (and there are plenty of tricks in these) she could have made them just as interesting, but dabbling in the occult definitely is not.
Except it’s not occult magic. It’s basically genetic-based magic (like someone above said, superhero like). Not everyone has the ability to do it (not because they haven’t “sold their soul”, but because they just simply can’t. It’s genetics, not supernatural).
The question I posed before was what those outside of the Church would think of us (faithful Catholics) raising HP up, not criticizing it. They would be even more confused, wouldn’t they?
If you’re so worried about PR, then you should be much more worried about they think about us if we all think it’s the spawn of Satin, because that would completely discredit us.
If you haven’t had the chance go listen to Lino Rulli. Every once in awhile he will poke fun at other Catholic shows by speaking in a low monotone voice for a few minutes. I don’t know how many ex Catholics and non Catholics he has attracted to his show by his change of pace/humor. He may push the limits sometimes, but you can not expect everyone to listen to some of the other stuff, even on his radio channel.
Lino. That’d be the one with the big nose, right? 😃
I love his show by the way.

I dunno if I’m drawing a blank, or just don’t know. But what does PR stand for?

Edit: Other than public relations obviously, but someone had PR in their name and the way they were talking it sounded like something different.

Lino is hilarious. There are a couple of shows on the Catholic channel that I really enjoy.

No, public relations.

He’s great (and has 3 Emmys for his work in Catholic tv). There’s a lot of people who’ve come back to the Church after listening to his show.
I am not aware of any chanting spells in the books. Could you tell us where we might find them?
:yup:

All the spells are some combination of faux latin (or some kind of pun) and vague wrist actions (which pretty much stopped being described after book 1). There’s no chanting at all (unless you count that weird Christmas choir from the one movie that existed just so Warwick Davis could have a part). Even look at Potions, it’s pretty much chemistry but with magic items (and vague stirring actions).

The excorcists didnt read the books.

I suspect Exorcists don’t have to anyway-they already know Satan’s Signature…

Why would anyone listen to someone’s condemnation of something* that he has not even read?*

I would never accept Pres. Obama’s condemnation of a health care plan upon knowing he’d never read it. I wouldn’t accept his condemnation of a senator’s immigration policy, knowing he’d never read it…even if he “already knows” someone’s “signature.” 🤷

**Questions for all:

Do you believe the Devil exists?

Do you believe Demons exist?

If you believe in either: do you believe that the Devil/Demons have the ability to tempt people away from Christ and towards bad actions?**

[strange that not even one person has bothered to answer those questions and I would say they are quite fundamental to the topic at hand…perhaps the fact that no-one has responded explains much]

**Let me add two:

Do you believe there is very real evil in the world and what is its source?

Do you believe that the Genesis accounts of the fall are real or simply a fable or metaphor?

Is that right? (How you know that-you didn’t specify or give links)

Nice cut n paste but what excatly is this supposed to prove?

Wow. Sometimes it takes me a while to catch-on. It seems to me that there are a lot Harry Potter fans on this thread, Catholics who really love reading the books. A few of us have tried to rain on your parade and THAT is why the topic becomes so quickly contentious. People do not not want others even hinting that what they are reading might not be wise.

Wow, that took me a long time and yet now it seems so obvious.

I suppose that since people react so emotionally against those who hold a different view about HP, there is probably very little (really probably nothing) that anyone could post to convince HP fans to turn against their reading love. No argument, no challenge, no facts, nothing from the faith, nothing from the Catechism, nothing from the Bible, nothing at all will steer people away from something they love–no matter what!

Seriously, what a waste of a thread and our time. 🙂

Got it–finally. 🙂
