**PRAYER TO ST. MONICA

Dear St. Monica,
troubled wife and mother,
many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime.
Yet, you never despaired or lost faith.
With confidence, persistence, and profound faith,
you prayed daily for the conversion
of your beloved husband, Patricius,
and your beloved son, Augustine;
your prayers were answered.
Grant me that same fortitude, patience,
and trust in the Lord.
Intercede for me, dear St. Monica,
that God may favorably hear my plea for

the conversion of my husband and the strong faith of my son, the conversion of all sinners in my family and of the spouses being prayed for here by CAF members,**

and grant me the grace to accept His Will in all things,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

I’ve read really wonderful things about this woman, isn’t she a candidate for sainthood? How many pages is the book? I’m wondering lately if it would take my death for my husband to convert. It’s a sobering thought, makes me contemplate where the priority is, is it for my own peace of mind and happiness that I pray for his conversion, or is it for the health and wellbeing of his eternal soul? Much of my prayer for him is really for my son, but even that is in my own self interest. Purity of intention is a serious challenge.
Yes, she is a candidate for sainthood, but I don’t know how to check on the status of the “investigation” or whatever it’s called. :o

I’m sure that you of course want your husband to convert for the good of his eternal soul. I think the secondary reasons (including so your child’s upbringing will be one of strong faith, and so that you and he can share in the beautiful, wonderful gift of marriage in a shared faith) are fine.

I’ve thought about these same things, and I’ve come to the conclusion that even if I want him to convert for “selfish” reasons, it doesn’t change the fact that I know the Catholic Church is the one true church and I want him to be part of it. Know what I mean? My mom shared this with me (I don’t know where she got it from):

“If I love you, I want heaven for you, and I’ll do anything I can to get you there.”

While I pray that my DH will convert before he’s on his deathbed (for pure and “selfish” reasons like wanting him to go to Mass with us), if he waits until then, I’ll be happy nonetheless. ❤️

Belle,
I love that quote!!! It just says everything this thread is about. I am going to put those books on my reading list–so many books to read so little time.

An update on St. Monica statue: I decided to put her on the mantle in my den. I also have a small stuatue of the Virgen of Guadalupe. That way everytime I see them I will say a prayer.
What do you guys think?

Novena 2: day three:thumbsup:

Sounds like the mantle is a great place. I’d also make room for a crucifix…perhaps the other two statues can go on either side. 👍

The great thing about reading the two books I mentioned is that you don’t have to read each of them all at once (though they are hard to put down!). Since they’re diary entries, you can read a little here and there when you have time, even just reading one entry a day if that’s all there’s time for. Also, if you’re reading something else (like a novel) at the same time, you won’t get confused on plots since these are pretty amazing and unforgettable. 😃

((((((((Diana)))))))

I also wanted to share this with all of you: I’m reading a book called The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur. It is excellent! She was a devout woman whose husband was an atheist. After her death at an early age (after a life of physical, spiritual, and emotional suffering) her husband read her diaries and was so moved by her love and prayers for him that he became a Roman Catholic priest! :clapping: Her view of suffering is so amazing – that it might be used for the redemption of her husband and loved ones.

May God bless all of you today. :grouphug: Despite our sufferings, we are truly blessed…there are so many people with the same problems as us, but they have no faith and no hope. Thank you Lord Jesus, that we know you!! ❤️
I have read this book. It is wonderful! I like to read her conversion prayer for my husband that’s in the book.
Miracles attributed to her may help towards her canonisation!

((((((((Diana)))))))

Thank you for your prayers. :hug1: You know, the funny thing is, I never knew he was an alcoholic until I was in college. Now it’s very apparent of course 😦 but growing up, I idolized him as so many daughters do with their fathers. He was never abusive, never mean, not a “typical” drunk at all…he’s a “functioning alcoholic.” He always went to Mass, always had a strong faith, and he and my mother raised us that way, thank God. I honestly believe that Satan is very unhappy with that, and so he uses alcohol as a wedge between my parents, between my father and us “kids,” between my father and God. It’s very disturbing.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe I read that St. Monica’s husband was a nasty alcoholic, and so it’s just another reason I’m drawn to her and trust in her intercession for us. I’m also drawn to St. Joseph lately (I’m drawn to a lot of saints!) because he was so instrumental yet there isn’t one word of his recorded in the Bible. (Not to mention that my DH is something of a carpenter, so I’m hoping he picks up other traits in common with St. Joseph 😉 )

I also wanted to share this with all of you: I’m reading a book called The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur. It is excellent! She was a devout woman whose husband was an atheist. I of course also highly recommend the Diary of St. Faustina (see my signature for a link). What a blessing it is.

May God bless all of you today. :grouphug: Despite our sufferings, we are truly blessed…there are so many people with the same problems as us, but they have no faith and no hope. Thank you Lord Jesus, that we know you!!
Thank you Belle! I’ve added both of these diaries to my “Books to read list” I’m looking forward especially to “The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur”.
I thought I had read somewhere about Augustine’s alcohol problem as well… not 100% sure either though.
May God Bless you too Belle, and may he keep watch over all of us, especially on those rough days. 😉

Lord, I commend all husbands and wives
represented in this thread to you this day,
That you would raise us up to be men and women after your own heart.
That you would cause us to grow in wisdom and in knowledge of you
and that these husbands become holy and spiritual heads of these homes,
and that these wives become and remain vessels that shine your light continuously.
Keep us all obedient to your will and humble in mind and action.

Amen.

the perpetual sobriety of my father and my parents’ marriage,
and for all the marriages represented in this thread

and grant me the grace to accept His Will in all things,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

That’s what I was thinking! Which prayer are you referring to (there are several…)? I haven’t finished the book yet (I’m in the middle of the Daily Thoughts journal).
It’s on page 205. Litany to obtain a conversion.
I finished the book a couple of weeks ago. I read it slowly as to take it all in and now I just can’t find a book to read that is similar to it. Maybe I should read it again.
But she was SO good, it makes me feel so…well… bad.
I complain, I whinge, I don’t want this suffering. SHE never even mentioned any specific suffering that her husband Felix put her through, although I think he was a very good man that loved her very much and treated her well, which is totally unlike my situation. (not that that’s an excuse for me to be less holy!)
She was a beautiful person. Doesn’t she look saintly in the picture on the cover?
I named the baby I lost last year after her.

I am only on day 8 of the first novena. I’ll never catch up to you guys!
I have been praying it a couple of times a day. My husband has been very nasty. He sends me horrible messages and I am just trying to pray for him every time I get one and I don’t answer. It’s a real stab in the heart and I think it’s best to combat evil with prayer.
Please pray I stay strong and not end up retaliating. God has been so good to me. I feel at peace and I am generally happy. Thank goodness, the children need a mother who is together. They have endured so much.
I am praying that God will soften his heart and for his healing and conversion. He goes to Mass each week (different one to me) but I do not think that he takes any of it into his daily life. He is so mean to me and the children. I feel so hated by him.

Wow, that is really really beautiful, thanks for sharing that. “If I love you, I want heaven for you, and I’ll do anything I can to get you there.” I was told by a rather devout fella who attends my church that I need to enlist my husband’s guardian angel in the prayer brigade, because his guardian angel is Catholic ~ all guardian angels are Catholic! Isn’t that funny?!? My husband’s birthday is on the feast of the archangels, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. I should read more about them and definitely beg their intercession. Sometimes I think that my husband is seriously meant for God, and maybe evil forces work harder to keep him than they would others because he is such a prize. I wish I could somehow communicate that to him without him thinking I’m :whacky:.

I’m not up to page 205 yet, but I peeked ahead, and that’s beautiful!
I highly recommend the Diary of St. Faustina for your next selection! It’ll change your life. 😃
Don’t feel bad – I don’t want this suffering either. None of us do. When I’m really starting to feel down about things, I somehow “randomly” 😉 come across a quote from a saint or something that reassures me that this suffering is bringing me closer to Jesus on the cross. In remembering His agony that was caused by me, it helps me get through these sufferings.
Sending you a PM… 🙂
I am only on day 8 of the first novena. I’ll never catch up to you guys!
I’m on day 4 of I-don’t-know-what-number-novena. Once I finish, I just keep starting it again. No need to catch up – I’m sure St. Monica has a great little calendar in heaven to “keep track” of all of us. 😛
Wow, that is really really beautiful, thanks for sharing that. “If I love you, I want heaven for you, and I’ll do anything I can to get you there.” ** I was told by a rather devout fella who attends my church that I need to enlist my husband’s guardian angel in the prayer brigade, because his guardian angel is Catholic ~ all guardian angels are Catholic! ** Isn’t that funny?!? My husband’s birthday is on the feast of the archangels, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. I should read more about them and definitely beg their intercession.
That’s awesome!! I totally agree – try this prayer if you like:

Angel of God, who are my guardian
To whom Merciful God entrusted me
Enlighten and keep me this day
Guard and lead me, Amen.

(I change it so instead of “my” I pray “my family’s” and “entrusted me” changes to “entrusted all of us.” You could also just put one person’s name in or whatever.)

I also recommend the St. Michael Prayer.

I was looking for something else and came across these wonderful words from (St.) Padre Pio:
“Remember that God is within us when we are in a state of grace and outside of us when we are in a state of sin; but His angel never abandons us. . . He is our most sincere and faithful friend even when we sadden him with our bad behavior.”
“Our present life is given only to gain the eternal one and if we don’t think about it, we build our affections on what belongs to this world, where our life is transitory. When we have to leave it we are afraid and become agitated. Believe me, to live happily in this pilgrimage, we have to aim at the hope of arriving at our Homeland, where we will stay eternally. Meanwhile we have to believe firmly that God calls us to Himself and follows us along the path towards Him. He will never permit anything to happen to us that is not for our greater good. He knows who we are and He will hold out His paternal hand to us during difficulties, so that nothing prevents us from running to Him swiftly. But to enjoy this grace we must have complete trust in Him.”
“Our Lord sometimes makes you feel the weight of the cross. This weight seems unbearable but you carry it because in His love and mercy, the Lord helps you and gives you strength.”
“Keep your eyes fixed on Him who is your guide to the heavenly country, where He is leading you. What does it matter to you whether Jesus wishes to guide you to Heaven by way of the desert or by the meadow, so long as He is always with you and you arrive at the possession of a blessed eternity?”
Also from Padre Pio:
“The proof of love is to suffer for the one you love.”
Believe me, I keep asking for my sufferings to be eased too, but we just have to keep trying to embrace them as best as we can, right? I really think God sees us struggling, sees us trying to do His will, and gives us the Holy Spirit to help us with the task. He doesn’t expect it to be easy for us, doesn’t expect it to happen overnight. Continuous, honest, humble effort is a good thing.
Sometimes I think that my husband is seriously meant for God, and maybe evil forces work harder to keep him than they would others because he is such a prize. I wish I could somehow communicate that to him without him thinking I’m :whacky: .
Evil does attack where it sees weakness, whether in a weak person or a strong person (the lukewarm are much easier to sway, so they’re not attacked as much, at least that’s what I think). For example: my Dad has endured many heartaches in his life, but has always had a strong faith. The one place he is weakest is alcohol, so evil digs in with the bottle and won’t let go.

Thankfully, we have the weapons to fight evil. :knight2: :crossrc:

:grouphug:

So, I think I’ve mentioned that you can get various talks and prayers on CD for free from www.CatholiCity.com. Well, I get a monthly email from them, and here’s part of the one I got today (I had to share it with you guys – bolded emphasis mine):

"We’re with you, and your fellow Catholics reading this message and indeed all over the world who are committed to their faith are with you. We recall the wisdom of a wise priest who, during Confession almost three decades ago, reminded a discouraged sinner that it was no coincidence that Jesus fell three times while carrying the cross. Before the end of his climb, he needed another man to carry it for him.

Resolve to take up your cross and rise again. You are carrying it for Christ. You are carrying it for all your brothers and sisters. And they carry it for you. Remember, always, that the coming Resurrection is not an ending, but the beginning.

LET US PRAY TOGETHER
Tens of thousands of CatholiCity Citizens are receiving this message.
Let us pray with each other, to Jesus…

“Dear Lord,
In place of our death, Your life
In place of our comfort, Your cross
In our eyes, Your sight
In our desires, Your holy will
In our sweat, Your tears
In our works, Your love
What is ours, be Yours, in all things
And in everything and in everything beyond
Everything, forever, Amen.”

My dear Jules, May God have mercy on you, and grant you strength to endure this pain with grace and humility. In his love for you, may he never let you forget how amazing you are, his precious child!

Jules, please know that his hurtful behaviour is not a reflection of your worth, but of his painful view of his own worth. In his pain, he looks not to God to heal him, and has not found the strength to cope with his suffering. His weakness only adds to his suffering, and all he can do is lash out in pain. I pray for God’s healing grace for your husband, and his devoted protection to you and your children. May he watch over you through each and every day. Lord I offer up my suffering and prayers to you on behalf of Jules and her family. May you have mercy on them, and offer them repreive from their suffering.
