… a woman can demand celibacy for the duration of the
term. ?
Who fixed this rules & regulations ? In married life , a wife must not say ’ No ’ to husband unless she is sick or has some genuine problems. During all her married life , a young woman will keep her husband away ? huh …why married to him then ?? 🤷

If one is very old , needs protection , then she can urge a man to give shelter / protection by marrying her but why a young lady proposes a man to live with her for a fixed period but keep away from her ? Those women who were given the good news of paradise during their lifetime , anyone did that ?

They will keep fasting regularly , lower their gazes , keep a safe distance from the opposite sex . Moreover they must fear God to avoid the major sin.
It is not up to us or to Umar to forbid something that has been made permissible, Historically it is well known even in your books that the companion Ibn Abbas was a strong proponent of Temporary marriage, even explained that quran 4.24 was revealed about temporary marriage and he criticized umar for banning it.

i think you are confusing temporary marriage with permanent marriage, I was referring to the former.

MM and Planten, you speak about how temporary marriage is forbidden and people can fast ect… then why is it necessary for your scholars to come up with creative ways of temporary marriage under a different name? a good example is Misyar marriage. Another one is marriage of a student male muslim living in the west.

I read a fatwa issued by the late Bin Baaz on his website which stated that **a muslim man living in the west as a student is allowed to marry a non-muslim woman with the ****secret intention **of divorcing her after his studies are over.

disguise it any way you like, this is the sunni version of temporary marriage in a cold and cruel manner.

I think the important thing to realise is that every rule can be abused.

One only has to look at the religious rulers of Saudi Arabia, or the Antipopes to see religious rules abused.

Frankly Mut’ah seems like a practical way to date in this day and age.

No one is suggesting that it should be undertaken lightly.

As well, from a theological position I see more support for the shia position than the sunni position.

It seems clear that the verse 4:24 supports ‘temporary marriage’ if you contemplate it carefully.

I have found this to be the case with a number of issues with shi’ism, including the concept of ‘imamat’ that sunnis reject.

But that is another topic.

… quran 4.24 was revealed about temporary marriage .
I am requesting you again to read all the verses regarding marriage & try to understand why God told us to get married , why Prophet (pbuh) encouraged us & told us that marriage is half of the deen . U did not tell me if marriage for 30 minutes is okay ??

And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves,
that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between
your hearts. Undoubtedly, in these are signs for those who reflect."
(Quran 30:21)

Does not matter who issued what , if that goes against the teaching of holy Quran , must not be accepted to any Muslim . Pl. read Quran & try to understand that marriage is not just for fun .

In what way Muslim Woman does this verse abrogate the verse allowing temporary marriage?

No one is suggesting temporary marriage is for fun either Muslim Woman.

** Sorry. I do not agree that it is a good way of dating. There is another very good way of dating in Islam, much better and far better than what is being done in the western countries.

That could also have a shade of a temporary marriage in it. But it is a beautiful and best (pure, legal) way of dating, if any one could practice it. There is room for it in Islam. I may describe it in detail some day. if requird. But it is not Mutah.**
No one is suggesting that it should be undertaken lightly.
Then Mutah should be discarded seriously?
As well, from a theological position I see more support for the shia position than the sunni position
.

I do not know what good you had seen in Mutah. Not to offend you but since your wife is a shia. Did you confirm before your marriage to her that she had practiced Mutah before meeting you? Did she ever do Mutah? I asked because it is a part of the Shia belief and considered a high level virtue amongst Shias.
It seems clear that the verse 4:24 supports ‘temporary marriage’ if you contemplate it carefully.
** It is not clear at all that verse 4:24 refers to Mutah or temporary marriage. There cannot be conflicting orders in Quran. In one place Quran is telling strictly against any secret marriage. At the other place it cannot recommend a secret marriage i.e. Mutah. .**
I have found this to be the case with a number of issues with shi’ism, including the concept of ‘imamat’ that sunnis reject

Thanks for enlightening us. It is good news that you are a convert. Have a good time. There is another important question that i would like to ask the Shias and may ask algebra too. Is a married lady also allowed to do Mutah? Such as the wife of algebra,. is she allowed under Shia belief to do Mutah now that she is married? If not then under what verse of Quran and under what clause? Please do not mind these awkward questions. Let us discuss them all while we are at it. thanks. No bad feelings.

It’s called misyar “marriage” for Sunni’s. Here’s an article in the Arab News about it in Saudi Arabia.

Whatever you want to call it, it is not marriage. There is no such thing as marriage as we understand it in the West within Islam and shariah. Though islamic “married” couples themselves may indeed enjoy a faithful and loving relationship as per the Christian definition, that is not a result of Islam.

Islam is about SEX - anyway a man wants it, whatever age a man lusts for, both on earth and in the islamic mythical little whorehouse in the sky called jennah.

My wife is sunni 🙂

ithen why is it necessary for your scholars to come up with creative ways of temporary marriage under a different name?r.
Okay, you are confusing this nonMuslim. You and Muslimwoman are both Muslim so why do you have different scholars?

Is there a ceremony associated with the Temporary marriage? It there a set time period that the couple has to be married? When the man and woman leave the marriage is it considered a divorce? Does entering into a temporary marriage hurt the woman’s chances of a permanent marriage later? Does the couple have to sign a written contract? Are women who enter into temporary marriages seen differently then those who wait for permanent marriages?

I read the article. It was very interesting. Although the Op seems to have entered into a temporary marriage with the intent of being allowed to court his wife, the Saudi men in the article seem to be only looking for easy sex. There were Saudi’s in the article who do not like this practice for many of the same reasons that Muslimwoman gives.

Am I to understand that it is called “misyar” in sunni, and “mut’ah” in Shia?

And if I read the previous posts correctly, if it’s banned why is it still practiced like in Saudi Arabia based on the article Crissie provided… ?

They are completely different things. muta is a temporary marriage proper, understood to be temporary at outset.

Misyar from what I understand is not for a set time.

However like all marriages in islam it could end at anytime if the man so desires, if the woman desires it is possible but much much harder.

We must read our holy book , try to undertand it . If find difficulties , then for explanation , we can seek answers from scholars. Anyone is allowed to give his/her opinion . It’s not a must for us to follow the opinion of any specific scholar.

If one gives opinion that marriage is allowed for fixed hours / days , others have choice/freedom to reject his opinion. Because this goes against the main goal of the marriage , goes against the commands of God Almigthy , examples of God’s Final messenger. Not a single believing woman who recieved the glad tidings of paradise during lifetime ever encouraged any woman to do so.
