The Catastrophic American Response to the Coronavirus

This might have been mentioned earlier, but I thought this catastrophic. In New York people that tested positive for COVID were being returned to nursing homes. Nursing homes is where the most vulnerable people are for this virus. About 95% of deaths have occurred to older individuals with other medical conditions that were 70 years of age and up. These individuals that tested positive should have been quarantined at the hospital. I hope New York is smarter in the future.

Forcing nursing homes to take coronavirus patients is just insane — and evil

except:

"Of all the missteps in the early days of the coronavirus crisis, New York state’s Health Department may have committed the worst: ordering nursing homes to accept residents who tested positive for COVID-19.

Instead of quarantining the folks most vulnerable to the disease, the state encouraged its spread: 85 percent of the state’s confirmed deaths from the bug are people over 60, with nearly a quarter of all corona fatalities coming in nursing or adult-care facilities — and at least 2,210 such deaths tallied in the city.

And when asked why these residents and workers weren’t better protected, Gov. Andrew Cuomo answered Wednesday, it “wasn’t our job.” It was up to privately run homes to keep infected people isolated; if they needed help, the governor magnanimously offered, they should’ve asked.

No. It was up to the state to contain the spread. That’s why visitors have been banned from nursing homes since the start of the outbreak.

Sadly I’ve read that in the UK similar policies are in place, of returning people that test positive for the virus in hospitals back to nursing homes. A bit on that can be read here:

Care homes and COVID19

excerpt:

The government’s disregard of care home residents – old, sick people, acutely vulnerable to COVID19 – has been scandalous.

As a GP, I regularly visit care homes. At one I visit, they recently had eight residents who died in a week, probably from coronavirus. But there’s no testing, so who could possibly know…

It is not called fake news I have to disagree.
One aberrant president in all of American history called it fake news because it is the classic method of leaders seeking to avoid scrutiny to discredit watchdogs. Trump has fired and attacked every single person whose job it is to watch him. From law enforcements, Federal Judges, IGs, FBI, CIA, US ATTORNEYS, CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT. Attorney General,MEDIA now Doctors who criticize Trump’s medical opinions.
TRUMP has said fake news means news negative to me.
Tell me, why should I not believe him and all I see?
Please don’t try to sell me the tale of fake news.
150 years and over 120 Pulitzer prizes later the Times is fake news overnight?

America has one. Some day they will say America had one.

feel free

but when they change the story to fit their bias, it is fake news, no matter who calls it

but go ahead and defend their actions

if you stop looking at everything through the trump lens you may see where some of us are coming from.

If I go to a history book and research fake news, I find out that these same century plus year old media institutions somehow " boom" became fake news one day when Trump called them that. It is like you waking up one day, look in the mirror, and you are black, or Asian( something you were not the day before) and 123 Pulitzer awards vanished.( The Times)
The coincidence in your mirror…Trump is president.
I can believe the institution morphed overnight or Trump had a media plan to discredit news to eliminated accountability.
Which is easier to accept? That is easy to answer . Right from the institutional attacks from day one. The introduction as legitimate news of something new:
Kelli Ann Conway’s ," alternate facts." Hannity and Fox became full on SYCOPHANTS, and an arm of the regime. Hannity got up on stage and took a bow during campaign rallys. (Do you know the line crossed over at that moment, or is it just chalked up to," how nice." Trump tweeted his unhappiness whenever a Fox news story was almost like real news. The government veto of news.
What other Trump firsts:
“So called Judges”
“Enemy of the people”( first autocrat to coin that phrase was Julius Caesar did you know that?).
Prior president’s never used these terms.
Use of Enemy of the people last century were : Stalin, Pol Pot, Castro Mao, and a few two bit African dictators among others. And Donald Trump in the 21st.
Am I deranged for exploring history books for objective facts?
You ask that I strive for ignorance? It’s to late. 50+ years to late. 30+ years in the Bar and in and out of government. To late for me. I have been shut out of the alleged bliss of " Trump Lens"
I ask, how many First Amendment Appellate decisions bear your name? Do you know the nation’s Constitutional rapid news dissemination policy and it’s interplay and ballance of interests involving accuracy? Do you care? "

Could you lay off the ad hominem for just one day maybe? We are all aware of how much you loath this president. They are your personal opinions only. Please refrain from the constant bashing every which way of Sunday. This forum is becoming a most unpleasant site for this reason.Thank you!

I responded to a claim about the Trump words," fake news."
Responded!!! I am sorry you felt the need to attack me personally for responding. I won’t ask why personally attacking me is OK.

I am asking you to stop with the incessant rants against ourcPresident . They are beyond uncharitable and making any sort of meaningful dialogue impossible. The tone of your posts are incendiary as well.

Is calling what I write ," incesent rants" charitable?
That is two posts in a row where you attacked me personally. Maybe you don’t know you are doing it.
If I AM critical within a subject involving Trump using the words Injection and disinfectant, I am writing on an OP subject lots of people find fault with. Not just me. To say what he said was presidential is an opinion I disagree with. I don’t call the author a rant-er.

I went 2 months isolating myself and did not see my son or grandson. I went 6
weeks without seeing my granddaughter. This was done partly to protect myself as well, but I have to trust my son and daughter-in-law are doing what they can to
keep themselves and the children healthy. Both my son and daughter-in-law have to continue to work. My daughter-in-law has an administrative job with a major airlines and my son is a supervisor at a plant that makes medical products used in hospitals and surgeries.

I have lived selflessly as a parent and grandparent.

I have yet to see you post anything Trump relatedthat isn’t filled with a litany of grievances you hold towards him.You never miss an opportunity to say how he is the most incompetent ,etc etc this that or the other thing, fill in the space. It’s getting real old.

Maybe consider a site other than a Catholic one where your views will be more widely accepted .

Additionally across the nation majority of those deaths were in nursing homes
That is interesting. Do you have a link to that information?
My grandson already missed out on the last 3 months of 7th grade and
was simply passed on to 8th grade.
Why was there no remote learning to complete the course?
Will the missed material be remediated in summer or fall?
I was shocked that he and the other students were promoted to 8th grade
without anymore remote learning! I thought there was a state law that a student had to spend so many hours in the classroom. He had a week of spring break that was the second week in March and that extended into 2 weeks and then the decision was made to cancel the rest of the year.
I have no idea how the 8th grade teachers will arrange their material in the fall or
other teachers of other grades. My granddaughter is supposed to start kindergarten in the fall.

I am shocked too. At the veruy least there should be a plan to incorporate this material into the next grade at the beginning of fall classes. Or make up over summer.

Ok?
Mr Sachs, if he is so distressed and concerned, qualified, etc., maybe ought to mobilize some of his resources to help us instead of blathering on with yet another incompetent news outlet.

Anyway, u posted the article link without comment or question. Do u have either?

Your story is not unlike mine. I try not to get offended when people characterize you negatively regarding working vs staying in. I just assume they are not considering other people’s thinking.
Thanks for the post. I can tell you understand the nightmare thought of infecting and them dying alone, or leaving them ( I still have two teenagers) to grow fatherless. That began haunting a few weeks ago when you think of it. Occasionally it got insulting. I appreciate your post. Honestly, I have trouble remembering what it was like when that kind of decision would have only involved me

If I go to a history book and research fake news
the media changed stories to something they weren’t. they made stuff up.
it was fake news no matter who called it fake news.

NYT’s changed a story due to the criticism it got, you figure this is how to arrive at the real facts?

go for it…

Changed a story?
You will have to remind of your example.
The Times made many retractions over the years.
SCOTUS has a long history of decisions, as do the states, involving retraction statutes.
The purpose of each state retraction statute begins with a recognition of why it exists. It’s purpose.
The purpose derives from a Constitutionally based 1st Amendment information dissemination system of ," rapid news dissemination." This goal of rapid news dissemination is considered vital to our freedoms and the Republic.
Problem is, fast is recognised to create mistakes.
So the law ballences the national interest in rapid dissemination vs the harm to people who have inaccuracies printed about them. Both interests are important but the ballance tips in favor of society generally when a case presents and both issues are at stake.
There is the retraction statute which creates a procedure for retractions. If the person claiming harm is right, the retraction takes place theoretically, or the person can sue.( For damages essentially justifying bringing a suit.)
Over time many scenarios of inaccurate stories( not fake) have arisen. Eye witnesses tell an inaccurate story, the news story is inaccurate. The reporting of what witnesses said is accurate.
The duty of reporters recognise “good practice” within a world where SCOTUS recognises, if it isn’t fast, it is no longer serving the Press function.
It is within this universe I bare bones describe, that Trump barfs," fake news."
Which ignores all reality of news reporting, the first Amendment, everything. The law furthur creates seperate rules for private and public figures. PUBLIC FIGURES accept this system VOLUNTARILY, the day they choose to be public figures according to SCOTUS. What does fake news tell you about Trump’s acceptance?
All I want is context. Context creates truth in this scenario

You would think! I asked if there would be some kind of summer school and he said, no, they just promoted him. Hopefully, a second wave won’t come along
during the next school year and they have to close down again. They will already be behind. @dvdjs
