My dear Estesbob, I know where you’re coming from, but take a tip from an old timer. Next time one of these types ask you what religion you are, tell them you’re a Papist. It’s fantastic!! It totally knocks the wind clean out of their sails. If you say you’re a Catholic, or even a Roman Catholic, then even these bigots might give you some line about one of their best friends great granny being a Catholic, but still, she baked lovely scones or some such baloney. But when you tell them you’re a Papist, it’s POW!! There’s no comeback. You fired the bullet first and it’s true. Papist only comes from the word Papish or Popish, meaning one who adheres to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and those in communion with her. In Scotland the (unenlightened) Protestants call us " Papes" or “Wine grapes” (rhyming slang) and we’re proud of it!

God bless you my papist friend

Jimmy two Guns.
What you say is correct. But that is because the P-word is so grossly offensive to many people. Many people, myself included, react in the same way as we do when we hear the N-word applied to black people.

Of course it takes the wind out of their sail. That is because it is a punch in gut.

Thank you Jimmytwoguns! You’re my kinda fella! I think I’ll try it on the next obvious “I’m out to save you from Rome and Hell” type. Hee hee hee! 😃

To those who feel offended by this kind of name-calling, they say it behind our backs so why not confront them to their faces? Bigotry is an ugly thing. If they call me papist, then I’d better be proud of it. If I am correct it is a blessing to be called names on account of our being Christian, as per the Sermon on the Mount. I think being called a papist is wonderful. Gee, do they know we are getting a blessing by their name-calling? and if they did, would they stop? hmmmmmmm…

Peace,

Gail (papist and proud of it!)

RPP, I hear what you’re saying, but listen to all that Gangsta rap they keep playing on MTV. Black guys call each other ****** constantly as a term of affection and respect and most importantly, recognition. They adroitly turn a term meant to be derogatory into something positive, with more than a little edge.

I’m not suggesting we all run around and call ourselves papists, (Am I?) But what if we did? Would that be wrong?. People would at least know where we stand! We believe Christ built His Church on the Apostle Simon, who Christ himself renamed Peter, “the rock”, and that’s where these heretics, despite overwhelming biblical and historical proof, disagree. So, as far as I’m concerned, nowadays, I’m more than proud to be called a Papist.

God bless

After reading the whole thread, this is all the same things that I was taught about the Catholic Church from the time I was about 2, and in Sunday School, not nursery. It’s amaizing how righteous they think they are, how offten they contradict themselves, and how they just basically disregard all the Scripture that they don’t agree with. A lot of the Baptist, (I’m not 100% sure as for the rest, but I get the feeling that they’re the same way) just compleatly disregard the entire Old Testament, except for Psalms, Proverebs, and whatever other one’s that perticular pastor actually likes. Usually just the ones with prophesys about Jesus in them. My mother is really big on puting down the Catholic Church. When I told her I was thinking about joining, she retorted with all Catholics go to hell, and if you join them you will, too. I told her I can’t posibly go to hell, I’m Saved, and that’s something that never goes entirely away. She said it does after you join the Catholic Church. Also, here’s one I haven’t seen mentioned on here, “the Catholic Chuch is a cult.” She just keeps reapeating that over and over… kinda sad… if she wasn’t so abusive I might feel more sorry for her… So I went and got her her book on cults, (it has a list of them, & it’s by a Baptist preacher) and guess what? Catholic isn’t in it! She said it was in a different book. I asked her which one, she said she didn’t remember. Then she handed me a pamplet by John R. Rice that’s a published letter he wote to a Catholic man, listing all the reasons the Church is against the Bible, etc. I read it (again, she made me read it after my very Catholic/misslead [she practicaly worshiped Mary…😦 ] grandmother died when I was 13) and I found a poor soul seriously misslead as to the teachings of the Church, with a strong hatred of it, who while trying to prove his point, couldn’t help but contradict himself over, and over again. If anything, it just made me pitty Baptists and such who actually believe everything he says. I told my mother he contradicts himself, and she retorted with “so your saying the Bible contradicts itself?” And that’s what a lot of them will say when you tell them they’re favorite anti-Catholic preacher contradicts himself. They poor misslead people seem to think that anything a preacher says from the pulpit is the Word of God, when infact, a lot of it actually doesn’t have any Biblical basis. They all just assume it’s in the Bible. And I know that Baptists are taught to studdy they’re Bibles, heck, mine’s starting to fall apart after 3 years! But what they’re not taught is how to interpret them properly. They don’t ask God to show them what the text means. They ask they’re pastor to tell them. I was forchinate enought to have a youth pastor (Pastor Dave) when I was in highschool that taught us from the Bible, everything he taught, could be found in the Bible. Infact, he sounded a LOT like all the Priests I’ve heard. He told us that inorder to get the proper meaning, you have to pray to God so He can show it to you. Also, he used more of the Old Testament than anyother preacher I’d ever known/heard. He actually wasn’t predjudiced again the Church, he just had a personal dislike of it, which he didn’t wanna pass down to anyone else. God bless him… Anyway, I’m gonna end this now. I’m very L-O-N-G winded, incase you didn’t notice…
Awww… welcome to our little ‘cult.’ 😃

I am sorry you feel this way.

I am profoundly insulted by the use of this term. I grew up in the Midwest USA and people spat as they said that word.

It is filthy and grossly denigrating and is never, ever, proper to use.

Continued use of this word in posts directed at me or on threads which I have posted on can only be interpreted as a direct, personal and intentional insult against me and the large majority of Catholics who find that expression of base bigotry filthy and sickening to their core.

Hi Gail Mac,

It’s time to nail our colours to the mast. To get off our knees (unless we are in the presence of God) and stand up and shout from the roof tops what we believe. Yes, we’re Catholics, yes, we’re Roman Catholics, Yes we’re Papists -

Then, ask the question, which one of the myriad of non or anti - catholic sects are you from? The so called Anglo Catholic Church of England ( a contradiction in it’s own name, which does everything it can to mimic the Roman Catholic Church) the High Church of England, Middle Church of England, Broad Church of England, Low Church of England, Anglicans all over the world, Episcopalians, high and low, Church of Ireland, Church of Wales, Welsh Chapel, Presbyterian Church of Scotland, United Free Church of Scotland, Free Church of Scotland (not united) which wouldn’t allow the former Lord Chancellor of Britain (one of their members apparently) to attend the funeral of a fellow judge who was a Roman Catholic (although he attended to his great credit and provoked more contoversy, in fact, I think he was kicked out of his church) Lutherans, Baptists, Southern Baptists, all kinds of Baptists and Anabaptists, Plymouth Brethern, Closed Brethern, Open Brethern, Exclusive Brethern, Calvinists, Puritans, Congregationalists, Quakers, Shakers, Methodists, and a whole bunch of snake wrestlers somewhere in the US of A… ad infinitum

St Matthew’s Gospel, Ch16 v 17 Christ said, to the apostle he knew would deny him thrice (before, always having been referred to as Simon) “And I say unto you, you are Peter (the rock) and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it”

I think I’ll settle for Papist, What about you?

God bless,

It’s one in the morning in Bonnie Scotland.

I know I should love people like those. But I feel most sorry for all the souls that they lead away from the church. Oh, and then there’s Fred Phelps. He lives in the same town I do. I have to shake my head in wonder everytime I see some of his signs. Even on the side of his “chruch.” It reads: www.godhatesamerica.com. sad, isn’t it? 😦
Hi, Christy Beth!

…I think that many have gotten so involved in judging others that they’ve managed to ignore the Word of God–specially those passages where Jesus calls us to “be one,” to “love one another,” to know that we will be held accountable “for every ill-spoken word.”

It is no wonder that Satan continues to hold the pulse of the world as he unites his minions, both demnos and humans, in quest to usurp Yahweh God’s Authority, while Christians spend more and more time ignoring the Holy Scriptures, in-fighting, and attacking (mostly the Church) other Christians.

Jesus’ sadness is revealed in our (Christians) inability to Stand as He Commanded!

I have updated my ignore list to avoid seeing the profanity anf filth one exceptionally crude member insist on posting.

That person is a very poor Catholic witness. Arrogance, insults and baiting is for the mean-spirited, not humble.

I’d heard this one before, but the reason I was given was because we put Him on the Crucifix instead of having an empty cross.
Hi, Linda Marie!

This has been my experience also… I guess they never read any of St. Paul’s writings… he bosts of Christ, and He Crucified!

This thread reminds me of an experience I had when I was in college talking with a young woman who was Catholic. In our discussion I mentioned the fact that Jesus was a Jew. She became irate at this and yelled at me that Jesus was Catholic. I tried to explain to her the truth… but she could not get her mind around this fact. She continued to insist that Jesus was Catholic, as well as Mary. Misinformation and ignorance is sad.
Hi, Catholictrain!

…I must concur with her, Jesus is Catholic!

…in the Old Testament it is foretold that the Messiah will come and in Him the Gentiles will find Hope; Jesus also Commanded the Eleven to “go onto all the world…”

…so it is evident that Jesus was born a Jew (under Judaism) and became Catholic (we could say the First Catholic)! 😛

Hey RPP get a life.

You grew up in the midwest you say. So what? I live in Scotland, where the difference bvetween Catholic and Protestant is only equalled in parts of Northern Ireland.

Where we come from, your first and second name tell people what religion you are. A few miles from me, after a football match a group of supporters of a team who until recently did not allow Catholics to play for them (We’re talking about a Scottish Premier League Soccer Side which plays in Europe, and because Europe is full of Catholics, in order to compete, now require to sign Catholics) grabbed a Catholic boy on his way home, cut his throat and stuffed his rosary beads down inside him! They call us papists, (A) because they know no better and (B) because originally it was a term for those who believed in the position of the Pope.

I do believe in the position of the Pope, therefor I revel in being called this name. If I was called a XXXXXXX Papist, then I would object. You Americans have no clue as to the fight over here in Scotland against bigotry. But if someone calls you a Christian because they hate you, will you object? Then why should I object to being called a papist. I am one! They cannot hurt us with the truth

One day I’ll tell you why they call me Jimmy Two Guns. (or not)

Hey RPP,

You state - “I have updated my ignore list to avoid seeing the profanity anf filth one exceptionally crude member insist on posting. That person is a very poor Catholic witness. Arrogance, insults and baiting is for the mean-spirited, not humble”

If you’re referring to me then why not say so? In Scotland, we’re made of sterner stuff. I used no crudity, profanity, nor filth when addressing anyone, and ask the mediators kindly to note this and acknowledge they have.

If you were referring to me, I don’t accept I’m "a very poor Catholic witness, nor am I arrogant, As apparently you can’t stand up to the opposition of the enemy, and they are the enemy, then I feel genuinely sorry for you and hope your cowardice will be overcome.

We Catholics get on your knees to Christ, but bow to no man!

Your Roman Catholic crucifiers reminds me of a story in an evangelical paper published in Vancouver which illustrated an article on the Crusades with picture captioned something like “Roman Catholic crusader looting Jerusalem.”
Its far closer to the truth than your example but conveys a falsehood: during the Middle Ages such a designation had no meaning. There were no Protestants and Catholics, just Christians.(Some) Protestants like to distance themselves from the Crusades, as if the Muslim were a just a type of Unitarian. Of course, there is at other whopper, that Protestantism is a direct lineal descendant of the Early Church that went underground until Luther, Hus, Tyndale et al.
Hi, Scoop!

…yeah… this one has come my way in one form or another… I agree with them, and I tell them that it is true because I know that the Catholic Church has more power than God… so we mighty Catholics kept the Holy Spirit imprisoned for about 1500 years…

These anti-Catholics are so steadfast in their erroneous beliefs that they ignore that it is the Holy Spirit, the other Paraclete, who is in charge of Christ’s Bride!

Won’t all the Catholic haters be surprised when Jesus returns as King and re-establishes the rightful place of His Church? I wonder if they will be able to accept the truth then?
Hi, Olivermax!

…would these not be those whom Jesus spoke about, “not all who call me Lord, Lord…?”

my #1: “Catholics are Christians?”
Hi, johnnydigit!

…well… ya… 'cause first there was the early Christian Church which Catholics made almost extinct (they had to go underground for nearly 1500 years), so Catholics took over… then there was that resurgence of the true Christians or was it Lutherans or Calvinist, or…(over 40K denomenations now) but Catholics don’t even believe in Christ–how can they be Christians?

Those who are against Catholics will find any way possible to mis-quote anything they read or hear.
A few years ago I painted a Bible verse on plaster for a friend who was sick and in the hospital. It was her favorite verse (unfortunately, I don’t remember the verse now). Anyway, another woman, also a friend of both of us, saw what I was doing and said the woman in the hospital wouldn’t like it because the verse was from the Catholic Bible. The verse was the same in both the Catholic and non-Catholic Bible’s, so I don’t know why she made such a fuss!!! … It just goes to show the ‘mentality’ of some non-Catholics.
Hi, CAJ!

…did you forget to put “KJ” or “NKJ” or “NIV?”

…you see, that’s the true Word of God! 😛

With regard to the Protestant mantra against the Catholic Church–“that’s not biblical”, I have found that Protestants don’t even know what the Bible says. One lady was telling me she doesn’t need a priest to confess her sins. She goes directly to God. I said, if that is so, why did Jesus breathe on the Apostles and give them the power to forgive or retain sins? She insisted that that was not in the Bible. When I emailed her the verse, John 20, 23 I believe, I never heard another word about it. I can’t think of a single Catholic doctrine that does not have some provision in the Bible. Protestants just disregard or overlook any verse that conflicts with their theology.
Hi, Olivermax!

…what I truly find confounding is their ability to determine that what the Holy Scriptures state is not really what it means–on that issue of Confession, you can tell them that St. John in his Epistle tells us that we are all sinners and that whoever claims not to be a sinner is a liar and makes God a liar… and that if we confess our sins Jesus is our Mediator and will grant us forginess… nope that’s not what it means…

Sounds like a good idea! I am a proud homophobic anti-choice mary loving papist.

I work in a Catholic Bookstore and from time to time we have Protestants come in and browse around. One couple came in, and it was apparent that they were Protestant. The gentleman told me he was “looking for a Bible verse.” I had to coax the verse out of him, and I finally located the verse in Hebrews for him. He insisted it was supposed to be in Isaiah. I showed him the verse, he read it and said “yes, that’s it.” I showed him it was in Hebrews, and he again insisted it was in Isaiah. At that point his wife nudged him and said softly “Honey, they’re Catholic. They have a different Bible.” and they left the store.
Hi, Andy Corder!

…could it have been that the passage in Hebrews was quoting Isaiah?

…but you know that lady was right… we Catholics have a different Bible–ours contains all 73 books, theirs (with the exception of the original KJ) only 66!

I’ve got a couple for y’all.

S-i-L’s sister:
Did you know that the Pope has a tunnel from the Vatican to Africa so he can escape if he needs to” … in a tone of ‘see what those no-good, scheming Catholics are doing’
I didn’t mean to laugh, but come oooonnn.

Quote from S-i-L:
Did you know that Catholics and Muslims have a lot of rituals in common?

I think she doesn’t realize how anti-Catholic her church is with quotes like these just thrown out there and believed with no proof or details.

My response: “Like what?”
S-i-L: “There are many.”
My response: “Like what?”
S-i-L: “There are lots of them.”
My response: “Like what?”

I was having trouble getting anything from her.
S-i-L: “Like incense
My response: “Oh? Well we can read about incense in the old testament and the new”
I talked about both then asked…
“Well how do muslims use incense?”
S-i-L: “I don’t know
I asked: “How do Catholics use incense?”
S-i-L: “I don’t know

Thankfully, the conversation was not combative.
This was actually the first time she and I have talked about ‘things’ in over ten years, so I am grateful to God for it.
This conversation will hopefully open more dialog and has already, I think, started a long overdue healing between us.

After I got home, I sent her Karl’s “Catholicism and Fundamentalism” and Scott Hahn’s conversion CD … and a three page letter.

Pray for us!!

michel
Hi, Michel!

…but at least we know that she doesn’t know much about what she claims!

…many are not as quick to accept that their belief-system is flawed!
