I work with special needs clients. They catch every illness I swear smh :woman_facepalming:t2:

The same is true in nursing homes 😧

I have been through much at CAF over the many years…
With God’s Grace …always with HIs Grace we can do His Will in all things.

I think people are concerned because it is an unknown. We have had outbreaks of different emerging diseases every two years ( more or less) for some time. COVID-19, MERS, SARS, H1N1 (avian influenza), Ebola, measles.

God has given us the intellect and desire to help that allows us to battle these with different degrees of success.

Comparisons to the flu are not applicable because of a few reasons, including as said, it is unknown, we have no immunity to it, wheras we have some to flu…the death rate is double at this point in China.
We cannot compare to world wide stats for this virus for a couple of reasons, one being Corona virus is just now becoming a global virus wheras influenza has been global for some time,

In 2 years we might have a stable established pattern we can use for comparison.

it is unknown
Not really. It’s part of a known group of viruses.
we have no immunity to it,
I’m sure some people do. It’s been documented that some folks are completely asymptomatic!
wheras we have some to flu…
Then why do we need a yearly flu shot? Uh, because it changes. Getting the flu once will not likely spare you from future flu strains.
the death rate is double at this point in China.
Maybe that’s because of the pollution, poor hygiene, unsanitary conditions, and atrocious healthcare. China is a mess on a dozen levels.

Correct, No it is not.

Just for the record, although I am not a spring chicken, I consider myself healthy and am ‘script free. I am not in a high risk category for death from this virus. I do feel for the many aged and compromised that have died and will die…

The flu has been around in one form or another for so long that many people have a certain amount of native immunity. The death rate for covid 19 is 46 times higher than the death rate for the flu. There are more flu deaths because it is more widespread.

I suggest that if anyone is looking for perspective, they limit their looking to the CDC and the WHO who are in a much better position to advise on how serious we should take this.

But when numbers that are easily misinterpreted are presented as a means of gaining “perspective” on a crisis, they can become an obfuscation of the more authoritative analyses.

And the sky has fallen for a great number of people…loss of life and disrupted lives.
And many are concerned about aged loved ones. I worry about our Pope Francis and the very many aged religious.

of course the press needs to shut up. Otherwise people might know they need to take precautions against a current threat

According to the CDC, the last season (2018-2019) the most recent season for which we have complete data, there were 34200 deaths out of 35.5 million people getting sick from the flu. That is a death rate of 0.09%. Not 6%. Please check my CDC reference right here. Even if you considered only those 16.5 million who went to their health care provider for the flu, that still gives a death rate of only 0.2% for the flu. If you consider only hospitalizations, then the number rises to around your 6% figure. But that is unfair because only the sicked people with the flu even bother to go to the hospital, so of course the death rate is going to be higher.

Depending on how you count, the WHO estimates that covid 19 is ten times more deadly than the seasonal flu.

Talking about the spread of the corona virus is not worrying about it, or panicking , in any way. Not discussing this virus or attempting to draw parallels to other illnesses is not productive and infact attempts to cancel or negate this virus.

If people are dying, it is certainly not a mild illness for everyone.
We do not know enough about how this virus is going to play out yet.

There is a reason countries are taking the measures for this virus that they dont with the flu. Have countries in the Southern Hemisphere stopped travel to and from those in the Northern Hemisphere due to winter influenza? Nope they havent. There is a reason why some countries have chosen to with Corona virus. Has any cruise ship had its entire community quarantined due to flu? Nope. But again yes to Corona virus.
Certainly cruise ships have had troubles with norovirus.

Noone said the sky is falling in, please dont read such emotion into this thread.

Corono virus is new , its novel, for a reason. I have two cuts of meat, one is Venison, the other chuck steak. If I cook one like the other, neither is edible, yet they are both flesh.

May I suggest again the spirit of this thread is to track what this virus is doing and its effects.
This virus is going to be a great big learning experience around the globe for various sectors.

It was also so amazing and good that 2 hospitals could be built so fast in Wuhan.

It is not a thread about comparisons with other illnesses, politics, panic, sensationalized news reports,
etc.

I am beginning to wonder if such a thread is possible. Maybe a new thread with how has the corona virus affected you so far … because CAF itself is a global community nowdays.

This thread was also alerting people of the prayer thread.

I’m extremely worried. I have a genetic disease and I have a high risk of complications from any virus in general.

Please pray for the world and all those who are suffering.
