At the risk of appearing pedantic, the KJ bible was approved by… King James or rather, the British Crown who held the copyright. It was produced and published to reflect religious beliefs held by the British Crown and as such was possibly inspired more by political motivation than by God.

As an Englishman I find it very flattering to hear that our little book has had and continues to have such an enormous impact.

I am rather bemused by this whole thread. I like my life. It was given to me by God. It’s going to be short enough without wishing to be whisked away half way through it.

.
hey dog my brother, well, if you dont want to be whisked away, im here to guarantee that you wont be. so now you can rest easy. just between you and me, hebrew and greek scholars diligently translated the bible. i believe in a strong god that would give us his real word in a book. he will use whom he will to do it. my god wouldnt keep his people in the dark. well friend, good luck with your god.

Sure it’s much easier giving a response like this, but perhaps it would be more helpful to do some research and give a half way respectful answer rather than just remarking that your God is not someone else’s because you believe different things… This response has no intentions of creating an educating discussion.

that’s a very fanciful interpretation. What if the British Crown deliberately altered the text so as to seemingly validate their military and colonising aspirations? Let’s face it, the bible version you’re quoting from was copyrighted by the Crown.

If you do believe that the KJV is totally inspired by God then you must also believe that the British monarchy, Britain and the British people were similarly God inspired and remain so. I would like to go along with that but common sense and history tells me otherwise.

Incidentally, you quoted Queen Elizabeth 1 in an earlier post. As always context is everything…her father, King Henry 8, had just broken away from the Catholic Faith and set up his own church, all just to divorce his wife and marry his mistress. A few years down the line and they produce their own version of the Bible…the one you hold so dearly. Hardly an auspicious set of circumstances.
hey dog, you really put a lot of meaning behind 2 letters; RE…yeah, real big protestant conspiracy, or as you say, colonial aspirations. yep, that RE really did the trick

Right, that’s why huge swaths of it are word-for-word exactly the same as the Douay Rhiems translation - except for those parts that (strangely enough) support the Protestant Monarchy. 🤷
i believe in a strong god that would give us his real word in a book. he will use whom he will to do it.
God already did that a thousand years before King James was born - He used Pope Damasus, the Councils of Hippo, Carthage, and Rome, Pope Innocent I, and a priest named St. Jerome. 😃

Dear johnpaul there have been many translation error found in the KJV over the years. It with other translations were the reason why the Church did not give permission for every one to put out a bible and forbid Catholics from owning and read many translation. they contained translation errors. Now think about this in the creation story man was to replenish that contradicts the Creation
story If Adam and Eve were the first then how could there have been others here before the now they have to replenish?🤷
hey bro scot, that question seems hard to answer. but sit back and think. is god telling the truth about adam and eve? who were adam and eve? god said; let us make man in our image, in our likeness. adam and eve were the first humans and the first creations that were just like god. the angels, the arcangels, the beasts around the thrones, none of them are just like god. so whoever was on he earth befor us were not human. the bible say that we were created a little below the angels but are crowned with glory.no other creation under heaven is crowned with glory.anyway, you have to keep in mind that a day with god can be a thousand yrs. in the spirit world, a second with us is a million lifetimes with them. all of the drama that went on in the earth befor us could have happend in the blink of our eyes.if the KJ say replenish, its good enough for me. anyway, its just a historical oddity, not in anyway involved in our salvation.

It seems you have fallen into the trap that so many and yourself speek of… First you said the Bible is easy to understand and can be taken at face value… now we hear all these stories about people infuencing your decisions and understandings… You say the HS doesn’t confuse, and Catholics agree totally, but then you go on to basically say that all those that don’t see the Bible as you (are whoever taught you) must be confused… but guess what; other Protestant denominations would feel the exact same way about you, and they too would totaly believe they are being guided by the HS and would use the same arguements you use and believe with all their heart they are right and you are wrong… You must admit that the Bible actually isn’t always that easy to understand?

The other thing… please could we have an honest answer… Are you really Catholic? I have yet to see any reference to your life at any point, that would resemble that of a Catholic… And for as long as you talk about believing things the Catholic Church does not, I would find it very very strange that you would still be a Catholic if you ever were one in the first place.

hey SD, i was raised protestant but always liked going with my catholic friends to their church. it seemed more real. yep SD, the bible isnt always easy. let me tell you a secret about me. i skip the tough stuff in the bible, like judges and deuteronomy and numbers, and i just skim over acts and kings.

That explains why you can’t find the Catholic Church in the Bible. (It’s in the Book of Acts, in case you didn’t know that.)

Thanks for your honest answer:thumbsup:

But being Catholic means much more than going to a Church building with friends… To most of us here at CAF it’s a way of life… It’s about living out the Catholic faith. I won’t tell you that you will see that faith in all “Catholics”, but I can tell you that it should be there.

Do I sense sarcasm in your Bible comments? just wondering.

SD

ps Do you ever wonder what seemed more real about that Catholic Church?

So was Jim Jones - so was everyone in the whole world who claims to be Christian. What makes you right and him (and the rest of them) wrong? Are you special in some way? 🤷
hey JM , are you suggesting that jim jones was a christian, born again? jesus said ; ye must be born again to enter into the kingdom of heaven. so, someone somewhere must be born again, dont you think? second, im not right about anything. i profess christ and him crucified. ive always said; if you want to know something, look it up in the bible( KJV)

well SD, at that time, i was a teen. i thought all the pagentry and smoke and bells and whistles were godly. the protestant services were boring to tears.

He said that he was.
jesus said ; ye must be born again to enter into the kingdom of heaven. so, someone somewhere must be born again, dont you think?
Of course! And if you look at the whole context of the passage, you see that Jesus was referring to the Sacrament of Baptism.

I suspect that I’ve been a student of the Scriptures for longer than you’ve been alive. 😉

hey JM, dont get me wrong, i really like you. we have a good dialouge. so dont get mad at this. its great to claim you study the bible. its better than reading harry potter. but there is one who knows the bible better than anyone. one who can quote it from top to bottom. you guess it…Satan. so, does knowing the bible get you anywhere? its not getting the devil anywhere.jesus always said; the devils believe, and tremble

Of course! :yup:

Which is why we need to be of the same mind as the Apostles, (Philippians 2:2) which is the mind of the Catholic Church (Acts 15). 👍

We can’t just read the Bible by ourselves and expect to understand it all on our own, because what we think is the Holy Spirit could in fact, as you rightly point out, be Satan.

hey JM, i was directed to catholic.org to learn about catholicism. cause i didnt know much but what i saw my friends go thru, catchism, confimation. plus i hear things from people. i get directed to websites. some things i find out are ridiculous.the vatican has these canons. they have all sorts of beliefs in these different treaties and what have you. just millions of pages of stuff. the average joe in the pews kows nothing of these things. ill bet you dont know whats in them either. its all there for anyone to read, but no one really does. the average catholic goes to church, prays to his god, drops a dime in the basket and goes home, completely unaware of all the canons and what not. then i heard of this infalabiliy of the pope and infalabiliy of the writings of bishops and popes and what have you. so, the average catholic church goer believes that. ok, go to church, stand, sit, drop the dime and go home. but they arent aware of how falable the popes are and how absurd some of the writings are. just like i was taught george washington can not tell a lie. it was in college that i learned he was a falable human like me. does this make my position clearer?

hey wanner, the litmus test is ; is the holy ghost dwelling in you? are you saved? if your saved you know the spirit. if youre not saved, you arent sure of your salvation. lots of people are sure of going to heaven. but the saved are sure and you cant shake them.if you arent saved, you still ask questions.
Hi johnpaul,

I am saved. I claim the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that he shed his blood to forgive me of my sins. I have been born again of water and spirit, and I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling, just like the St. Paul.

That being said, if you and I differ on a matter of theology, how will we know who is right?

I’m sure if you ask the head of Protestant denomination, they will all say that they are saved and born again. Yet, many denominations differ on many key points.

Again, what’s your litmus test? Many people who are saved also have differing theology, so how else can you tell who truly hears the Holy Spirit?
