YAQUBOS:
Peace be with you!

Please, everyone, can I ask you something? Accept it as an advice from your little brother. Please, take the time to read previous replies before you reply. Because many things are being repeated again and again many times.

I think this topic has come to the end. We have arrived to the point where faith is needed. We can’t argue more than this in vain.
How convenient of you saying that this discussion has endedth with your OWN conclusion.

No, I do not think that faith ALONE (if this is what you’re implying) is needed… All the verses I have quoted give testament to that.
You need to be alive in order to have good fruits of Life. Having Life means being saved. A dead cannot do anything.
Do you think you have Life?
How did you receive that Life?
If you didn’t receive that Life yet, come to Jesus and have It for free.
Catholics is only the one who have life. Why? Because we “chew” (trogo) the body and blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 6:47-59
47 Amen, amen, I say unto you: He that believeth in me hath everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers did eat manna in the desert: and are dead. 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven: that if any man eat of it, he may not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. (6-52) If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world. 52 (6-53) The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 (6-54) Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. 54 (6-55) He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day. 55 (6-56) For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. 56 (6-57)* He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me: and I in him.** 57 (6-58) As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father: so** he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me**. 58 (6-59) This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this bread shall live for ever. 59 (6-60) These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.*
Don’t let anyone deceive you by telling you that you have to work hard until you get that life! You must have that Life BEFORE being able to work hard by His Grace.
Nobody is saying otherwise. Work and faith is performed under grace. Without grace none are possible.
All religions of this earth tell you that you have to work hard to get life. Only the True God tells you that you can have Life for free.
Life is given by God in the Name of Jesus Christ FOR FREE.
If you cooperate with that grace. There’s a very small effort on human part to make it all possible. Human free will. But the assent of the free will is also helped by the grace.

Continue below

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.” ( Revelation 22:17 )
This call is not to tell you come out of your church, but out of death to LIFE.
So the whole matter now consists in believing these words of God or not.
Arguing in vain will not save you and will not give you LIFE.
In Love,
Yaqubos†
Have you taken the body and blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord lately? If you never have than you have no life in you (John 6:53).

Oh, just in case anyone EVER handing me John 6:63 as refutation of the Real Presence, I shall killed his/her argument respectably.

James is not telling us that we are justified by works apart from faith. The context is still faith, only James give stress that faith has to be active, so that we are not deceived as having faith but has never shown in our conducts (works).
Again, I must tell you that your argument is very Protestant. Protstant tried to escape James 2:24 by saying that it has to be an active faith.

But what makes an active faith? “WORK”

Some will object and quote Romans 3:28 and said that Paul means faith without any work whatsoever. Now, this person is in error as I have shown. Paul understand two different meaning of the word “work” and he use it interchangebly:
  1. “work” as in employer and employee relation
  2. “Work” as in father and son relation.
Romans 3:28 used No:1 meaning. We can see that it is so in Romans 3:27

Romans 3:27
27 Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

This boasting, like someone who work and earn what he had done is a legal term that God do not want to have with human. God wants a father and son relationship. Why?
  1. Because you can not obligated God. Any work or even faith that you have is aided by Grace. Yes you have free will, it does play a small part. But even the assent of the free will is aided by Grace
  2. God loves human more than a mere employee (as in employeer and employee relation). And he wishes that human understand this and also enjoy to love Him as a father, not as employer.
So, there’s ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH WORK! As long as we know that it’s under grace and by faith. BUT NOT FAITH ALONE.

Anyone who believe in Faith Alone is an anathema to the Christian faith.
This understanding is confirmed by 1John 3 :
1John 3
7 Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.
8 Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.
9 No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he CANNOT sin because he is begotten by God.
From this passage we know that if we are still sinners we are not God’s children. In the contrary, if we are begotten of God, we will not fail to act righteous. This is the context of James 2:21-24.
Are you saying that everything you do currently are righteous and you can not do any sin?

Because if you do believe that Rom 6:15 shall judge you

Ro 6:15
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid!

quote]Bottom line of all this : Genesis 22 has never spoke about Abraham justification, because in that passage, Abraham was righteous because of his own obedience. When Abraham was obedient, he did not need any justification anymore. He was righteous because he has believed first and then justifed freely by God (Genesis 15), only then he could perform the act of obedience (Genesis 22) out of that faith.

God bless you Pax.
Justification is a process. The initial justification is all what’s needed to enter heaven. When a man is initially justified and then die at the very moment he will enter Heaven. HOWEVER if he continue to live he may continue to be justified. It’s like the process of making yourself cleaner and more equal to Jesus as a disciple.

And Abraham WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED if he did not DO (work) what the Lord tell him to do.

If Abraham only believe in the lord but did not:
  1. Left Ur
  2. Offered Isaac
Would he still be justified? NO. His believe means NOTHING!

The works of love is different because it is done out of love. If it is done to follow rules, it is nothing. Therefore, rules can become a stumble stone, especially if these rules condemn the faithful, so that the faithful becomes fearful, then fall from grace because of those condemnations.

God bless.
Why are you so afraid of being fearful?

Is it not John Paul II who said that “fear of God” is a virtue?
  1. Dear workers, our meeting is illumined by the figure of Joseph of Nazareth and by his spiritual and moral stature, as lofty as it is humble and discreet. The promise of the Psalm is fulfilled in him: “Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways. You shall eat the fruit of the labour of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you… Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord” (127:1-2, 4). The Guardian of the Redeemer taught Jesus the carpenter’s trade, but above all he set him the most valuable example of what Scripture calls the “fear of God”, the very beginning of wisdom, which consists in religious submission to him and in the deep desire to seek and always carry out his will. This, dear friends, is the true source of blessing for every person, for every family and for every nation.
You are suppose to be fear to break the rules. Because the rules are from God. If you have no fear and keep breaking the rules then you’re not obedience to God.

God in his mercy, has provided us with the Sacrament of Penance. So if we do break rules we can ask for forgiveness, whcih Christ provides abundantly.

If you do not even try to confess then it will noit be the rule that condemn you, but your sin which has made you break the rule.

The epistle of James

James is not telling us that we are justified by works apart from faith. The context is still faith, only James give stress that faith has to be active, so that we are not deceived as having faith but has never shown in our conducts (works).

God bless you Pax.
Francisca,

I do not believe that we are justified by works apart from faith. As Catholics we realize that we are not justified by works apart from faith. No one has even suggested such a thing on this thread. The Catholic Church has condemned such thinking as early as the fourth century in stamping out Pelagianism.

If this misconception is what is causing the difficulty for you, then please rest assured that we in no way believe that we can be justified by works without faith.

The Church’s true teaching is that which comes from Jesus and the apostles. We are saved by grace alone, through the merits of Jesus Christ, by faith and works, but not by faith alone. This is the only statement for justification that embraces all of scripture and properly integrates the message of Paul and James. By the way, the message of Paul and James is the same. They are expressed differently to complement one another in such a way as to remove any doubt about God’s divine message to us.

My biggest objection to everything posted in this thread and in my general discussions with non-Catholics on the subject of justification is this:

Under no circumstances are those who teach that we are saved by “faith alone” willing or able to accept the plain words of the apostle James. They always deny that he is saying what he is saying by attempting to nuance the verses or they simply reject them as not having the same level of validity as their tradition’s doctrinal premise of “faith alone.”

In 2 Peter 2:20-22 we read " For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog turns back to his own vomit, and the sow is washed only to wallow in the mire." Please notice that Peter warns of returning to sinfulness “the defilements of the world” and that the person that does so is worse off then before having known the way of righteousness. Their deeds count! Their deeds mean something! They are people of faith, but their returning to the defilements of the world will put them in a state that is no better than before they had faith. They will be condemned!

Now Peter makes it clear that we are not saved by faith alone. But that’s not all. At the end of this same letter Peter points out a couple of other very significant things. In Chapter 3 verses 14-18, Peter says, "Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of **lawless men ** and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Peter is telling us that we can lose our stability which is our faith and salvation. Notice how the unstable twist scripture to their own “destruction.” He relates these things to being found “without spot or blemish.” Once in Christ our works mean something! And finally take note: Peter says that there are “many things in Paul’s letters that are hard to understand.” He never says this about the writings of James or the other apostles.

The Catholic Church has had it right from the day of Pentecost and has never wavered on its teachings on justification. It was not until the Reformation that a man made tradition of “faith alone” emerged from Luther and Calvin. Your view of “faith alone” cannot be found in scripture, cannot be properly supported even peripherally, goes against the constant teaching of the Church, and has no historical heritage prior to the early 16th century.

YAQUBOS:
Peace be with you!

Friends, why don’t you want to talk about the Life that Jesus gave you,

We do brother. We joyfully shout Holy, Holy, Holy and sing Glory to God in the Highest and the Angels and Church Triumphant worships with us, because we have a unity with the Christians of all ages that is rooted in an Apostolic Church that actually followed the Saviour.

** You on the other hand have only song, some prayer and a lecture. Your relationship to scripture is a matter of convenience. You cite it only when you think it supports your view and discount any content that contradicts it. Your approach to us as fellow lovers of the Christ is without kindness, humility or genuine curiousity for our views.**

You elevate a particular and we think narrowly twisted man interpretation of the views of Paul to effectively abolish and overthrow the words of the Saviour Himself. You make the Scripture the enemy of the Church, the Paul the enemy of the Gospel of Matthew and you have esteemed yourself Elect in Christ because of a superiority based on the dubious soundness of an interior opinion and call us fodder for Massa Damnata because our Faith actually calls us to obey Jesus Christ the King.

if He really gave you Life?
**Better, He kept His promise in John 6:52-62 and He gives us spirit and life in the Form of His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in an awesome mystery of His generocity. **

You on the other hand have reduced the Sacred and Sacrificial Meal He instituted to a celebration of man worshiping himself and making interior opinion his God. You have a form of Godly piety, but deny its power.

Don’t you know that the whole matter is a matter of DEATH and LIFE???

Yes, that is why we expect to be raised with Him. But we are mindful that Judgement begins with the house of God and He promised in Matt 25 to ask us if we had obeyed His mercy commands.

It will not be enough to say, ‘We obeyed them in our heart only Lord’.

How does a person LIVE?

**We live to Christ and for Him, as Paul teaches us and as his Apostolic Church teaches us and love is crucial. **

And what is it to LIVE?

To live is Christ, to Die is gain. And EXCEPT YE EAT MY FLESH YOU HAVE NO LIFE IN YOU.

This is not philosophy.
Exactly, God wants all of you. To make an artificial distinction between belief and action is to make John 3:16 the enemy of the Sermon on the Mount. Sounds like a Gospel of Demons to me.

This is what the whole Bible talks about, from the first page till the last page.

**Yes, and you seem to miss it. Maybe you are not liable for your blindness. **

Please, tell everyone coming to this site about the Life Jesus has given you, if in fact you have received LIFE.

***I am touched that you care for our souls and are concerned for our Election. ***

***Revelations warns of having your name blotted out from the book of Life and candlestand removed. ***

***If you think having correct opinion exempts you from the actual demands of the gospel, your faith is not faith. It is sloth masquerading as self righteosnes. ***

The choice is easy; who actually followed the Christ, St Francis of Assissi, or John Calvin? Ask Michael Servetus.

Who followed Christ in Modern Times; Ian Paisley or Mother Teresa? Ask any Irish Catholic.

In Love,

**Q: **As a Catholic, I have great difficulty in understanding Protestants who speak of salvation by faith alone. Does this come from differences between the King James Bible and Catholic translations of the Bible? Don’t other Bible passages explain salvation differently?

**A: **This, of course, was the subject of much misunderstanding at the time of the Reformation in the 16th century. The expression “faith alone” is not found anywhere in the Bible’s original Hebrew or Greek texts. Some people have mentally inserted this expression into Romans 1:17b (“As it is written, ‘The one who is righteous by faith will live’”) and in related biblical passages. The problem here is that “faith alone” could be understood as merely an activity of the mind. Someone could say: “I have faith; I am saved. My future decisions do not matter.”

It might have been to counteract such an interpretation of faith that Jesus clearly explains that saying, “Lord, Lord,” is not enough to be saved because people must do “the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Matthew 25:31-46 and James 2:14-17 make for sober reading about the importance of a person’s daily decisions. A living faith already includes a response to God’s grace.

bless you all:)

It’s naive to conclude from Rev 20:13-14 that the wicked are judged according to their work while the righteous are not. If you believe that the satndard is faith, then even the wicked should be judge by their faith. If they had no faith than hell be upon them. Yet they are judged according to their work. Why is that.

Your verse twisting doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

You should look in the mirror before quoting Mark 4:23.
The wicked are JUDGED according to their works, and the emphasis is on “judged”.
They are not judged by their faith, because they have no faith! They have chosen to be justified by their works, according to what is written in those books! So they are JUDGED by those works, because no flesh will be JUSTIFIED by works.

As for the righteous who have Life by faith:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” ( John 5:24 )

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” ( Romans 8:1 )

“Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts?
Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?” ( 1 Corinthians 6:2-3 )

We will judge the world and the angels… And you talk about the judgment of believers…

I didn’t even explain these verses, because they are VERY clear! And you say I am twisting… But when you create vain human philosophies around the verses, that is not twisting…

Have you taken the body and blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord lately? If you never have than you have no life in you (John 6:53).
“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.” ( Revelation 22:17 )

This call is not for you IF you think you are righteous, if you think you have Life just because you are taking the body and the blood of Jesus Christ. Don’t you know that “whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.” ( 1 Corinthians 11:27 )??

“I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” ( Matthew 9:13 )

Our Master didn’t come to call those who think they are righteous and they are alive, while they are DEAD! We, His disciples, we also don’t call those who think they are righteous.

They always deny that he is saying what he is saying by attempting to nuance the verses or they simply reject them as not having the same level of validity as their tradition’s doctrinal premise of “faith alone.”
Do you accept the following “PLAIN” words of James:

“Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?
Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called?
” ( James 2:5-7 )

Some “PLAIN” conclusions from these verses:
  1. God only chose the poor of this world to be saved.
  2. It is the rich who oppress.
  3. The rich blaspheme the fair name of the Lord.
So why don’t you accept these “PLAIN” words of James?

You did a big mistake by judging me about the Body and Blood of our Lord, because I respect that very much. But I don’t have to prove this to you.

YAQUBOS,

I’m very curious about something. You stated earlier that you are not a protestant. Yet your doctrinal views do not seem Catholic (at least not in the way most readers here understand what you are saying).

If you’re not protestant, and not Catholic, to what Christian denomination do you most closely align yourself? If you claim to be Catholic, what particular sect or community do you belong to?

I’m not trying to pigeonhole you, or label you, just trying to know where else I might find someone with your doctrinal views.

YAQUBOS:
Peace be with you!

“THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” ( Romans 1:17 )
Did you notice the verb? Live by faith, as opposed to just having faith and living however you want.
“For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.” ( Romans 3:28 )
Works of the law! Not all works. What Paul is saying is that eating meat without milk, killing animals in the proper way or avoiding certain foods like pork, crustaceons etc., does not get you to heaven.
And one of the examples of works of the Law:
“you shall love your neighbor as yourself” ( Leviticus 19:18 )
This is technically a commandment, like “thou shalt not kill,” or “keep holy the Sabbath day.”
And we know that “For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”” ( Galatians 5:14 )
Notice how the law is fulfilled. It is now greater than the laws of the Old Testament because it is the fulfillment of them.
So we are saved from sin to have LIFE ( to live by Faith ). And thus we fulfill the Law by faith AFTER having life by faith NOT BEFOR having Life.

“Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.” ( Romans 3:31 )

Sin is: 1. Doing the bad we must not do. 2. Not doing all the good we must do.

So how can you do the good you must do without first being saved from sin and without having Life FIRST. Without Life, you are dead in sin, and you can’t do good deeds. When you are saved from sin, you have Life, and you do His Will IN CHRIST.

Jesus said:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” ( John 5:25 )

Now is that time! Believe in Jesus and have LIFE! Those who believe, have Life, and their name is written in the Book of Life.
Jesus said:

“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” ( Luke 10:20 )
But they’re names can be taken off the book of life by bad works as St. John says:

Rev:22:19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

YAQUBOS:

But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?
Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called?
” ( James 2:5-7 )

Some “PLAIN” conclusions from these verses:
  1. God only chose the poor of this world to be saved.
  2. It is the rich who oppress.
  3. The rich blaspheme the fair name of the Lord.
Your conclusions here, though “plain” to you, are logically faulty.

#1) James says “did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom…”. He did **NOT **say “did not God choose ONLY the poor of this world…”. Saying that God chose the poor does not by logical necessity mean that He did not also choose others to be heirs; it does not mean He chose ONLY the poor. This is the same faulty logic that people use to say “Paul said we must have faith to be justified, therefore we only need faith to be justified.” Simply not logically true.

Here’s a simple analogy. I invite ten people to dinner at my home, 4 of whom are men, 6 of whom are women. The statement “Javelin invited men to dinner” is true, but to say “Javelin invited only men to dinner” is not true. You could truthfully say “Javelin invited men to dinner” and “Javelin invited women to dinner”, and both statements would be true.

So, logically: “God chose the poor…” – YES, TRUE
“God chose only the poor…” – NO, FALSE

#2 and #3 are also flawed – they should be taken into context together. It would be more accurate to say:
“It is rich who oppress the poor that blaspheme the name of the Lord”. But again, that doesn’t mean that only oppressive, rich people blaspheme the name of the Lord. Quite a different statement.

Does Paul say that we must have faith to be saved? YES
Does James say that faith without works is dead? YES
Did Jesus say that if you have faith enough to move mountains, but have no love, it profits you nothing? YES

ALL
of these must be true because they are Sacred Scripture! The Catholic Church upholds all the scriptures with its doctrine; there is no contradiction. “Faith alone” directly contradicts scripture, therefore it must be false.

Islam says the same thing as you say… Jehovah’s Witnesses too… And all other deceiving religions of this corrupted world…
But apparently so does the only religion that is completely true:

**James:2:14: What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? . . .

17. So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. . . .

19. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe – and shudder. 20. Do you want to be shown, you foolish fellow, that faith apart from works is barren? . . .

24. You see that man is justified by works and not by faith alone. . . .

26. For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead.**

This is not some idle comment from St. James, nor is it an obscure passage. St. James repeats the same message 5 times!
