FRIEND< look for the WORD “Bible” in the bible, its right next to it.

May God soften your heart

Have a grace filled Christmas

Patrick

That’s not what I asked. I asked where does it explicitly say it is a mortal sin. Nothing you posted even has the words “mortal” or “sin” in it. The rest is typical holier-than-thou doublespeak. Why can’t you just say what you mean instead of parroting documents? I’m asking for YOUR logic, not to have stuff quoted to me. I certainly am not going to be convinced by anyone who isn’t showing me he can think for himself.
If you want, you could start a thread on this. You might get more perspectives thatvway. Or look up old threads. I’m sure many have asked this before you. It’s a question a lot of people wrestle with before fully commuting. Don’t lose heart! The answer you need is out there.

Catholicism isn’t “sola scriptua”. Scripture is clear that there are sins that “kill” and other sins.

The Catholic Church has provided a coherent and unitive interpretation of this topic, elaborating the criteria for each, using the authority that Jesus gave His Church to “bind and loose.”

For Catholics, end of story.

For the Protestant and Protestant minded, I’d ask to see the Scripture verse substantiating their “if it’s not in the Bible” criterion. Because it’s not in Scripture, self-under-cutting 500 years of rebellion.

Show me in the Bible where the term “moral sin” is used. And please stop being so patronizing. It is not appreciated.

I get we are not Sola Scriptura, or any of the other solas for that matter. But I still don’t see where Jesus authorized the Church to take His teaching places He did not take it. The Apostles did not do that. They seemed to preach Jesus’ message pretty faithfully. They did not “riff” on it or expand it. That all came much later.

Jesus gave Peter the keys, authority, the power to donand ecide. See Isisiah (keys). He also said what you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and He face them power to forgive sins.

There are numerous “decisions” and interpretations made by St. Peter in the NT.

All those key passages are metaphorical and vague. There are no physical keys, at least not that we know of for sure. Those passages don’t even allude to a “catechism,” or a “magisterium,” or “bishops” or a “pope.” Those are all concepts that came along way after Jesus. Who came up with those concepts? The very people that those concepts confer power on.
  • “We declare that we are infallible!”
  • “How do we know?”
  • Because we said so and we are infallible!"
Can you see how that is a circular argument? Are we actually accusing Jesus, the God made man, of not being prescient enough, or not being capable of being specific enough, to spell out that authority that is so central and key to everything that would come after Him?

I will not sell Jesus short on that score. I think He said exactly what he meant to say and held nothing back. I worship Jesus and no false gods before Him. I see the Church and the clergy as being here to help me worship Him. I don’t tolerate Him being used as a rationale for me worshipping the Church and the clergy.

Show me where the Bible says what books are to make up the Bible.

Show me where the Bible says that everything we are to believe is contained therein.

Show me the Trinity in the Bible

"Show me where the Bible says what books are to make up the Bible." Good point! We’ve even discovered Biblical writings since the Canon was set, books the Church fathers didn’t even know existed when they made their choices.

"Show me where the Bible says that everything we are to believe is contained therein." Another good point. The Church has added stuff that we are to believe that is not in Bible.

"Show me the Trinity in the Bible" I’m not so concerned about that one. Believing the in the Trinity is like believing in the Immaculate Conception. It really doesn’t change any I have to do differently, except the wording of some prayers I say.

All I am trying to do is keep Christ, and what he said in the middle of all this and not let Him or His words become a sidelight. He is supposedly Who we are here for.

You might want to type less and read more…read the early Church documents.

Do some actual legwork here. Didache

It’s too easy to “sit and dismiss”. Catholicism is for hardier students.

My FRIEND,

My intention is ONLY to share the fullness of God’s Truths, which you seem [to ME at least] either resist or insist MUST be on your terms; which is typical of Protestants.

John 20: [30] Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book.

[31] But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name."

John 21:24-25
[24] This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. [25] But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written.

If my FRIEND you only want to argue; I’m 73 & and too old to do so.

If your expectations are that everything HAS TO BE spelled out in the bible; that was never GOD’s intent; as no one book could contain it; which is precisely WHY He prudently gave US His One True Church who he guides and protects as evidenced by just One Set of RCC Faith beliefs for 2,000 years.

I Do hope & pray that you have a Blessed Christmas.

And NO the bible does not specifically say [it does however teach it] that Missing
Mass on Sunday intentionally IS a Mortal sin.

Patrick

I’m a male in my early 30s and I’m also catholic. I’ve noticed that over the years, I’ve found myself going to church only when I’ve had problems in my life and then I’ll stop going when all of my problems are solved and my life get better.
You do realize, to deliberately miss mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation, puts you in mortal sin…right? You do realize what happens to one who dies in mortal sin…right?

I’ve also noticed that I’m not the only man that’s been doing this and the reason why I feel like men are doing this is because the modern church has become very feminized throughout the years. If you read the Bible, it’s really a book that contains stories about men and the things that those men went through and how God helped those men get through their adversity. …[snip for space] you never hear about them in church.
How about this explanation

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church

CCC 2181 “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation (Sundays), unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor . Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.”

Grave sin = mortal sin

Where would the CCC get that from?
All emphasis mine

Heb 10:
24 and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. 26 For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the man who has spurned the Son of God, and profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace?

That is talking about
  1. the Mass on Sunday “the Day” the Lord’s Day, the Day He resurrected.
  2. Sacrifice for sin & Blood of the covenant = words Jesus used instituting the Eucharist. Matthew 26:28 , Mt 26:28 RSVCE - for this is my blood of the covenant, - Bible Gateway, Mark 14:24 , Mark 14:24 RSVCE - And he said to them, “This is my - Bible Gateway
  3. violate this is to spurned the Son of God, and outrage the Spirit of grace?

My question to all of you is that if you think that political correctness has had anything to do with the disconnect that you’ve seen with the church and young men today. [snip for space]
We’re not in mass to be entertained. We are there to worship the one who saved us, and gave us Himself to consume…

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but the Bible is read from EVERY DAY in the Catholics Church, as our services are not JUST on Sunday, but daily - as Jesus is our DAILY Bread of Life. (John 6:48-58; Matthew 28:18-20)

And if you attend the Mass every day for (I believe it is) three years, you WILL have heard the entire Bible read from.

My question to all of you is that if you think that political correctness has had anything to do with the disconnect that you’ve seen with the church and young men today.
Yes. I think the apologetic (as in asking for forgiveness) way of talking about the faith has had an enormously negative effect on the world. People say they are willing to evangelize, but they would never put their beliefs out there and make people uncomfortable.

It will be a lot more uncomfortable in hell.

That attitude is bad for evangelization—but what does it do to the kids watching? …Mom believes it is important for every soul to know Jesus, but she doesn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable by talking about it. She either doesn’t care about anyone else, or it isn’t true. But I know she cares about people. IT MUST NOT BE TRUE.

It’s true for me, but I can’t tell you what to believe.

Everyone is a child of God. They just express it differently.

That isn’t what Jesus said. It isn’t helping people feel better about the faith. More people turn away.

It is a failed experiment.

The Church predates the completed Christian Holy Book, and is that through which God gave His completed Book to man…

However, the Church and the authentic Bible it contains serve God…not the Book. The Church is not about the Book or the pastor…it is about God FIRST.

I don’t have a real answer to your question, but I do have an observation ;
I regularly attend Spanish Mass because I am a Spanish Music Director. I’ve noticed that there are plenty of Spanish Men of all ages attending, and very involved with Parish life. The Hispanic Church is thriving, whilst the English Masses are kinda palid…
I wonder if it’s a reflection of American culture as much as anything else.
