I sure don’t know where this evangelical/fundementalist Catholicity is coming from…LOL…I love Halloween! It’s alive and well in our house. So is the “santa lie” as I’m hearing it so sadly called on CAF lately. Apparently the hardcore folks who are trying to de-cafeteriacize themselves no feel it necessary to bash Halloween and Santa Claus. I’m sure the evil Tooth Fairy and leprachauns are next![]()
In a neighborhood ninety something percent Catholic…as a child…we all hit the streets on Halloween night.
Visits to the store (before malls) to sit on Santa’s lap and a picture too…were the norm. As kids…our neighbors…and in school…“public school”…we wrote letters to Santa Claus…and the teacher mailed them for us. In Catechism class we learned about Saint Nicholas…we knew they were one in the same…only the “American” version of Santa Claus dressed a bit different than the European Santa Claus.
The Easter Bunny always left us a basket of treats and small toys on Easter morning. Only we could not eat one piece of a chocolate bunny until after Mass. My Italian aunts made Easter pizza and bread with hard boiled eggs, shell and all baked in it.
Fast Forward…Charleston SC…on St. Patricks Day…the Hibernian Society members would march down King Street for the St. Pat’s parade drinking green beer. All of them members of a Catholic Parish in Charleston.
Tooth Fairy…yes, she visited me…I got a quarter for a tooth. Flash forward to my kids…inflation brought it to $1.00.
I don’t get where some of these people are coming from…
