I mean, there is certainly a sense in which our European ancestors were worse than any immigrants today, but in what sense do they not count as immigrants? There were people already here. They had societies and laws and territorial claims. We mostly just didn’t care.

I thought that most of the Native tribes didn’t have territorial claims. Most of them didn’t have a concept of land ownership.

Where were the chaperones that the kid mentions multiple times? Why did one of them not step up when he saw several total strangers approaching his group of students? I suspect they just weren’t around.
From Sandman’s statement:
Because we were being loudly attacked and taunted in public, a student in our group asked one of our teacher chaperones for permission to begin our school spirit chants to counter the hateful things that were being shouted at our group.
I think they were chaperoned, but the chaperones were as powerless as everyone else. The ratio may have been too low, but I don’t know that an adult could have stopped this any more than a teenager.
How is the Diocese of Covington going to back off its story that its students acted badly? They had an apology out within hours of the first story breaking. If the kids really aren’t guilty then why did they apologize?
This is on the Diocese. I do think it acted prematurely. A more cautious statement about condemning racism and having the matter “under serious investigation” may have been a wiser move while waiting for all of the facts to come in.

A lot of posts in this thread presume to know a lot, but none of us have all of the facts.
This kid and his fam likely lawyered up because they’re afraid of him getting penalized and his college entrance chances ruined and they also might be planning to sue the school or diocese. Naturally his statement is designed to make himself and the other kids look totally innocent.
A damaged reputation is no small matter. It could haunt him for the rest of his adulthood and is especially unjust if his statement is truthful. Even if he and his buddies were in the wrong, expulsion will suffice. Internet shaming and mob “justice” can even drive people to suicide. Online critics make a terrible jury.

Again, outside of the protesters hurling threats and homophobic insults, I don’t know either way who was at fault. Maybe neither of them were, and they misunderstood each other.

This thread is full of a lot of opinions and not enough information on which to base them. Healthy skepticism is our best friend.

They may not have had the same notion of property ownership as Europeans, but I’m sure they knew which territory was “ours” and which belonged to “those other guys.” And certainly 99% of it did not belong to “these new guys we’ve never seen before.”

Sarcasm aside, from all I’ve heard, it was an extremely crowded and chaotic scene. They were told to wait in that exact spot.

The deleted Morrissey image mirrors the level of hatred I’ve been seeing on Covington CHS’ temporary FB page.

It’s shocking how many people want to harm these students and everyone/everything associated with them. The amount of HATRED is disgusting

It’s a modern Lynch mob and frankly there should be charged brought

I would hope that all physical threats would be investigated and criminal charges filed. We are long past the time when we allow threats of violence on social media to be allowed under free speech.

While I agree, it remains extremely rare for Internet harassment and even death threats to be taken seriously by law enforcement.

I hope that remains the case with this. There is a protest scheduled tomorrow at the school. I hope nothing goes down there, either.

They are ignored like the Broward County Sheriff’s Office did, leaving 17 dead kids. Threats of violence must not be ignored.

I think what really needs to be pursued is all of the “doxing” going on. People are trying to find and post as much personal information as possible on these kids so that others can threaten and physically confront them and their families. And this goes for all “doxing” that goes on. It is basically an incitement to violence.

No disrespect intended to Prince William.

Some of the Covington fans are shown yelling at the black opponent. News flash! In such environments, home fans yell at all the opponents, whatever their skin color. Shame on NY Post and others for trying to sell this subsequent smear.
