Is everyone here saying that all creationist proposals are incorrect?

I also have a UCC on my list that’s not a creationist church.
Why wouldn’t you just go read what the researchers say? Why are you looking for the incredibly rare contrarian? And believe it or not some researchers have put some effort in to debunking the nonsense on AIG.

Effectively all scientific proposals by Young Earth Creationists are incorrect. Some of their theological proposals are correct: that God created the earth and life on earth. It is just that He did not us the methods that YECs allow.

A Christian can say, “I believe that God created all species and used evolution to do it.” AIUI, that approach is allowed (though not mandatory) in the Catholic Church.

They must all be lying. The question is why? What do they gain? They are obviously perceived as threats.

I’m saying that any proposal according to which the universe is just a few thousand years old is incorrect.
Then why would this pastor, who isn’t trying to deceive me, become a pastor of the LCMS? Why would he adhere to a young earth?
Why do you think that the fact that he’s nice and he’s honest means he’s right about science? This is a complete non-sequitur.

One doesn’t have to have to have the intent to deceive to be spreading nonsense. Sadly, the best purveyors are junk science are people that are sincere. Sincerity doesn’t guarantee correctness, and this pastor, whatever his motives, and whatever his sincerity, is spreading nonsense.

Oh come on. The history of Creationism in the United States is no secret. They lie in part because they reject the science, and in part because speaking tours in church basements and town halls is profitable enough. Heck, Kent Hovind made quite a career out of a diploma mill he ran out of his house, and if it wasn’t for the fact that he didn’t report the money he was making to the IRS, he probably would still be getting away with it.

Ok. So why, if you don’t understand the math and say that you’ll never be able to, would you defer to a fringe argument instead of the argument of almost the entire body of learned physicists of the last century?
Because I like the church and the people I’ve met there. Of course, I’d probably feel the same about other churches if I’d give them a try.
I find this answer very bizarre. I ask why you’d accept a fringe position on physics, and you say it’s because you like the people in a particular church.

I’m sure you could find some very nice physicists who aren’t young-earthers. Would that convince you of the scientific consensus?
Newton, by all accounts, was a horrible human being. And yet he stands as one of the greatest minds in the history of the world. In the immortal words of Clint Eastwood “nice ain’t got nothin’ to do with it”.

Yes. And as far as me accepting a fringe position, I’d been spending time on CARM and I wanted some scientists who weren’t on the fringe and one poster was very insulted. I thought maybe they’re right after all.

Please don’t make the mistake of associating someone’s personal niceness with his rectitude on questions of science.

Let’s do a thought experiment.

I’m a structural engineer. I went to more than six years of college to study structural engineering, and I have a few years of work experience. I’ve helped design about eighty buildings. But I’m frequently not a very nice guy.

Jimmy is an organist. Jimmy is a just fantastic guy. He plays for his church, he gives free organ lessons in the community, he volunteers at a soup kitchen, he’s literally the best, nicest person currently alive.

If you want to build a house, who are you going to turn to?

You.

OK. So there are different types of con-men. What does this have to do with anything?

Why is that? Jimmy’s really nice, and I’m kind of a jerk. Why would this not mean that Jimmy’s opinions on houses are correct?

I get what you’re saying. And I still haven’t ruled out the ND church I’ve also been going to. But that pastor really is kind of a jerk.

Ok. So, again, why would the niceness of the Lutheran pastor factor into your decision regarding whether to accept or reject the scientific consensus on the age of the universe?

I thought that he (and another guy on staff) might be right and that maybe I’ve been wrong all along.
