Trump's incompetence makes Andrew Cuomo's performance look better than it is

You should have paid attention to what was happening in New York. I am not sure where you live, but to ignore what was happening in New York was not wise on your part. Maybe if you had paid attention you would understand the criticism
better.

We all have been in uncharted territory.

Six or seven months from now, they willball look back and see where they could
have done things differently.

Why do I need to know whether or not Cuomo deserves criticism? I’ll never have to decide whether or not to vote for him or for an opponent (and if I did, you wouldn’t tell me to back him if he had handled this brilliantly, would you?)

Everyone complains about the high number of deaths in our country and what happened in New
York must be taken into consideration.

Assessing blame isn’t usually among the most urgent aspects of crisis management…and don’t think I don’t want to jump in, too. It just seems a bit early to know for sure what decisions made a difference and which ones could have been better but wouldn’t have changed much. I’m trying really hard to reserve judgment where I can (for a change).

People are criticizing Trump because deaths occurred in the US from the virus while he was president.

If he is criticized for those deaths, as some here do, then governors should be criticized for the virus deaths which occur in their states while they are governor.

Most especially if their administrations made rules which it was already known would result in a greater spread of fatal cases.

I’m willing to let the voters of New York decide that. That’s their (your) civic duty.

I think I agree? I believe both deserve criticism, though not judgment. I think it quite reasonable to examine what was done right, wrong, competent, or careless. Judgment though should be tempered by how hard this decision was. I guess my only disagreement would be with either receiving accolades when there is so little evidence that accolades are in order.

I know in an election year that the way the handling of the epidemic is spun will throw voters one way or another. Personally, I do not think many would have done well with this crisis, and it is a toss up who would have been best. I will not factor this, or the economy, into my assessment, though I think I am in the minority. I would hope though that other voters here might consider this and take the actions of our leaders with a grain of salt. It was a sore trial.

A) He’s my President and this is a democratic republic, so keeping track of whether he’s doing his job is my civic duty. He’s been poor at his duty as a communicator. He spends a lot of time downplaying the seriousness of the situation (although I understand he also had consumer confidence to think about and the situation did evolve very quickly) or shifting blame, he spends too much time flattering himself in rather silly ways, and he talks about things as if he understands the medical issues when he very clearly has no idea what he’s talking about and hasn’t done his homework. Much of the duty and authority to take public health measures lies with state governors in our country, though. The decisions with regards to national borders were very difficult; I don’t think he’s done worse than other leaders of other liberal democracies. (It seemed very silly to make it seem like the Mexican border posed some great threat to us when we had a far worse situation than they had, though.)
B) I’m fine with chipping in on what our governor in my state is doing. So far, so good, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t make some decisions I’d take serious issue with as time goes on. (And dealing with this crisis isn’t a governor’s only job.) Let New York worry about Cuomo.
C) As time goes by, we’ll have a better idea of what the big picture was. We won’t get it from the President, however, because he has been so bad at sticking to the facts that he has put himself somewhere below the level of the most biased news outlets. (I don’t know of a news outlet that says things as preposterous as he regularly has or that is as allergic to retractions as he is. I include both the far right and the far left. There are probably worse–I don’t spend a lot of time on an outlet I can see is extremely biased–but it is hard to imagine how. The President just doesn’t bother with facts at all a lot of the time.)

Adjusting 80+k down, up, sideways.
Is there a significance to this effort?

Trump had a plan and resources available and ignored it because the Obama administration created it.

I couldn’t say why he ignored it, but from what I understand the first iteration of our pandemic planning was already complete during the Bush Administration. This has not been made into a partisan matter in the past.

The only thing partisan is the cover-up of the fact that plans and resources were in place and not utilized when it mattered. So much effort to conceal the truth.

It makes me angry people are so quick to condemn and vilify President Trump.
He was going by what people were telling him. He is not a doctor. He is not a
scientist.
He decreased our preparedness to fight the pandemic.
He erred in relying, early on, on a poorly-conceived strategy of of containment, with insufficient attention to preparation - stockpiling equipment and supplies - for the fall-back position that we eventually needed. His administration failed to assist states in the emergency management of supplies. He has been consistent in overly optimistic, and, at times, downright dismissive statements on the expected progress of the virus in the US. He has taken action about scientists in the administration whose messages he did not like. He has made the jobs of governors enormously harder by his support of action against state regulations.

There were good models of what to do. Some other nations executed the good models and have had much, much better outcomes.
However, it is doubtful the rest of the country will experience the number of deaths like New
York and New Jersey.
I think that this is probably right. For this reason:
Next time, we will probably shut down more quickly and totally, rather than gradually and hesitating to disrupt people’s lives.
We were slow to appreciate the gravity of the situation. Until we began to saw just how hard this virus could hit, we fiddled. The states who were hit later had the advantage of seeing what happened in the North East and were able to act at an earlier stage of progression. I hope that as mitigation measures are relaxed, people remember the lessons. Otherwise we will repeat that terrible experience in other regions.

Is there a significance to this effort?
The significance includes the advancement the epistemological chaos that some types of rulers favor: don’t believe anything that they say, believe only me.
It includes outreach to any members of the base who admire people with no training who know better and eschew elite expertise.
It may be part of an effort to be le the marketing of a claim of success if some count or another of the number of dead is not more than 100,000.
It is an attempt to con the pandemic by gaslight the those who suffer, and those who are working like mad to help reduce the risks to our people.

Thank you, dvdjs. I will have to read it on a different device as the writing is too small for my old eyes to read on a phone!

Point being across the board numerous cases of Covid19 have been listed as cause of death, when other issues were the actual cause. Therefore the actual death rate from this virus is significantly lower than what’s being reported.
