There’s a difference here: Omar has NOT been canceled. Criticized, yes, vociferously, yes. But she still has her job and paycheck. Last I heard, congresspersons make $174k per year. That’s not exactly Target cashier income.

As opposed to some out there who have been forced from their jobs for wrong think.

I don’t think Omar will be forced from her job anytime soon. I’m certainly not hearing about any credible opposition to her this November. Being criticized severely but still keeping her job is definitely not the same as losing one’s job for a single wrong statement or incident.

Yes, these are crazies (which we will never lack for till the end of time), but they in no way constitute a majority utilizing cancel culture as a means to curtail FREE SPEECH for ideas or individuals they DESPISE.

Why do you think people like J.K Rowling, Noam Chomsky, Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood . . . are writing an open letter denouncing the cancel culture that is rather MAINSTREAM and has been for awhile?

And I stand by my previous statement that the majority utilizing this method is the left because it is they who are in control of ACADEMIA, HOLLYWOOD, MEDIA, SOCIAL MEDIA, and therefore influencing the CULTURE/MORES of society.

Yeah, having your life threatened to the point where you must receive extra protection is much more effective than losing your job. The only reason she has her job is that a private person can’t just fire her at will.

The difference between you and I is I’m not making special rules to protect Right wing attacks on free speech (and that is exactly what it was: attempting to make sure NO ONE can safely criticize Israel or AIPAC, especially not a Muslim person.) I was in debates not too long ago, defending JKRowling being targeted for her comments on aspects of trans-rights activism she finds problematic, and even defending the word “woman” for labelling biological women. What irks me is trying to protect blatantly vile behavior because the person talking and being attacked now is one you’d consider your political enemy.

But she doesn’t have to pay for that protection as opposed to a private citizen.

Soooo . . . it’s not an attack on her free speech, because while Fox is touting her as a terrorist sleeper agent, people who want to kill her will find a police man.

She can keep on speaking because her protection is paid for and her risks do not include losing her job.

I, on the other hand, have no such luxury as a private citizen.

Omar may well be pushed out by Lacy Johnson:

Or Dalia, that’s how I remember her, Iraq refugee, Dalia al-Aqidi:

They both seem to be great people.

Let’s not forget, it’s said Omar is on record of saying some anti-semitic things as well.

You’ve got to love this tweet from Lacy Johnson:

Explain to me how you are oppressed

@IlhanMN
? You have paid your “new” husbands consulting firm $878,000 from your campaign. You are getting rich off of your own campaign. You also complain our political system is corrupt. Do you see the hypocrisy in your own statements? https://twitter.com/ilhanmn/status/1280679586980823042…

SHE IS NOT MY ENEMY and I despise the nasty words used to criticize Ilhan, so in that we are in agreement, but you need to stop JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS that I’m supportive of this type of conduct or that this invalidates my argument that it is the Left (as they have control of most every institution) that use cancel culture to curtail and shut down the free speech of others and their ideas.

I speak of individuals who use cancel culture to create safe spaces in schools, on forums thereby limiting free speech . . etc, to doxx individuals, have them FIRED if they don’t think the right way . . .etc.

Note: You implied that the criticism stemming from this one comment Ilhan made about Israel was the reason for their “hatred” rather than MANY comments and actions taken by her that many view as unsavory, immoral or anti-semitic.

It was your attempt to put ALL her critics in the WORST possible light even implying that they are racists for criticizing her so that got me to say what I said, that this is not anomalous to her actions/behaviour.

An article was posted that Mohammed owned slaves, 4 of them at least. When is this cancel culture going to take this to task??

You can “keep on speaking” too, if we are going to use that crazy standard. The idea that your life being on the line because an entire media wing is convincing people you’re some kind of terrorist helper doesn’t impede your “free speech” when it comes to those topics that ignited the umbrage is strange.

How often has she dared criticize Israel and AIPAC since? Pretty effective strategy, indeed. But if we don’t care about people actually being able to say what they think freely when those affected are on the other side, it makes sense.

To follow that kind of thinking, then private citizens who have the “luxury” of getting out of the public eye after a job-loss and a week or a few weeks on the cycle or when someone else is on the news, are still free to say what they want. Certainly not in as much (constant) danger as someone half the country has been convinced is in some kind of cahoots with their enemies.

“During election years, there may be many handouts and voter guides that are produced and distributed. We encourage Catholics to seek those resources authorized by their own bishops, their state Catholic conferences, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops”
Source? And who is worth listening to more, your local bishop, or the sum of church tradition and teaching over 2000 years?

I think there’s plenty of evidence to show that most private citizens put their career on the line when speaking in public. I’m thinking of people like the co-founder of Mozilla who was forced out of the company he helped create because people didn’t like what he said (before he was hired). About the only people who are protected are democrats in office and liberal college professors with tenure.

Here’s what the bishops say about handouts from Catholic laypeople on voting from Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
More so, the author of the voting guide is a theologian, with oversight from a priest. So tell me again, why should we just blatently ignore it?

I did not jump to conclusions. I pointed out the Right’s vicious treatment of Omar as an example of the Right’s attack on free speech and you responded thusly:
I’m sorry but Ilhan has made herself despised for more reasons than can be detailed here.
So, basically, “She deserved it,” or “She brought it on herself.” It’s hardly a leap to read that as support for the treatment she received.
I speak of individuals who use cancel culture to create safe spaces in schools, on forums thereby limiting free speech . . etc, to doxx individuals, have them FIRED if they don’t think the right way . . .etc.
It boggles my mind how you don’t see that this whole Ilhan thing was the Right making the entire country a HUUUGE safe-space for zionism, Israel, and AIPAC. 🙂

Note: You implied that the criticism stemming from this one comment Ilhan made about Israel was the reason for their “hatred” rather than MANY comments and actions taken by her that many view as unsavory, immoral or anti-semitic.
Why is “hatred” in quotes? 🙂 Do you consider numerous credible death threats to fall below the threshold of hate? Not to mention the DISGUSTING ocean of abuse she received?

I am well aware of not just the hellish bruhaha Ilhan Omar received FOR MONTHS over the contrived/made-up anti-semitism before new bruhahas were invented over new lies, from comments blatantly taken out of context. Like her attempt to distinguish Muslims like herself from the 911 terrorists being twisted by the Right into some kind of disrespect for 911.

In addition, I referred to them directly in my comments to you, so it’s not true, even in this thread, and even my conversation with you that I’ve kept it solely to the anti-semitism. For sure that was the first storm, then the Right, never satisfied, manufactured others months after the already vile storm was still not completely over.
It was your attempt to put ALL her critics in the WORST possible light even implying that they are racists for criticizing her so that got me to say what I said, that this is not anomalous to her actions/behaviour.
That is simply untrue. Please demonstrate where I have “put ALL her critics in worst possible light”: 🙂

(1) I have spoken of the vile treatment she got as proof of the Right’s own version of “cancel culture” and vile intolerance. You decided to justify the treatment I pointed out, and I challenged that attempt.

(2) You claimed she has a history of anti-semitism; I challenged you on it; I asked for examples, you said you did not want to discuss it. And I pointed out that you wouldn’t find anything factual, because I followed this story and know none of those comments were anti-semitic. They were criticisms of Israel, AIPAC, anti-BDS legislation.

I’d love to see anything you can find anywhere that she has said or done that would remotely justify the frenzy the Right have over this woman.

And you will never catch me supporting it. What you will catch me doing is refusing to let conservatives do special-pleading for the Right’s own authoritarianism. My statement that you quoted is attempting to show that poster that if we do what they’re doing, a similarly glib response could be given regarding the individuals who’ve been cancelled by the Left.

Did you even read the document? More so, are you ignoring the points that st. pope John Paul the 2nd made, or Benedict, or the other clergy? More so, did you even read my response earlier describing non negotiable verses negotiable? More so, how is the protection of innocent life “a political axe to grind” or the protection of basic moral values preventing intrinsic evils “a political axe to grind”. It sounds to me like your the one with the political agenda in ignoring these guidelines. Almost sounds like that is an excuse to justify voting for immoral candidates. You also ignored that this was done with oversight from a member of the clergy, and a theologian who teaches at a Catholic university.

Generally speaking, we shouldn’t just ignore things because we disagree or don’t like them

I put hatred in quotations because not everyone who criticizes her hates her. Those who made reference to death threats and/or used abusive language do though.

Moreover, stop acting like there isn’t a legitimate reason to critique her stance and/or commentaries vis a vis Israel. There is enough out there to condemn her.
