The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the Obama administration’s denial of asylum granted to the Romeike family, who fled Germany over its strict anti-homeschooling laws.

In a press release Tuesday, Michael Farris, founder and chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), said, “We believe the Sixth Circuit is wrong and we will appeal their decision. America has room for this family and we will do everything we can to help them.”

I expect the point is that it wouldn’t have served the same kind of 'making a big fuss about German policy’ purpose to have just quietly flown to the UK or caught a bus to Denmark.

That right there is exactly what this family was trying to do. They were not trying to get asylum to be able to homeschool their children in the US. They were trying to get attention by requesting asylum to homeschool in the US. Just another reason that the US should not grant them asylum and be a party to this.

I disagree. I think there is a free speech right to say that the Earth is flat. However, there is a difference, at least in my mind, between a parent saying that this is what we believe in this household, and actually teaching a child as an educator that the world is flat and there is no other viewpoint.

This has been the law in Germany for quite sometime, and it has shown no evidence of spreading.

I am not the biggest fan of homeschooling, as you can probably tell. That being said, I do not think that it should be banned. I do think though that it should not be a right, because we need to be able to put limits on it.

all constitutional rights have limits.

homeschooling can’t be banned, not in the US, for many reasons, not least of which is because there’s a right to be stupid. people who aren’t fit to train a dog can homeschool their children.

Not if they were Obama voters. And if illegals were removed, we wouldn’t have 1000s of undocumented aliens in this country.

Now this family will lose their children if they are deported back to Germany.

If this was 1933 and this was a JEWISH FAMILY who was escaping Germany, would you be for deporting them as well? Or would they actually have REASON for asylum?

This anti home schooling law goes back to the Nazis who used it so they could use their propoganda on the Germans in the state run schools. It should have been removed a LONG TIME AGO…I don’t think this family is teaching their children anything that Nazis would have!

And this is one of the biggest problems that I have with the idea of homeschooling.

There are also people that just deny facts and want their children to do the same, and so they are going to use homeschooling as a means to limit the knowledge of their children so that they fit the mold the parents want. This is a disservice to the children that will not have the basic knowledge needed to function and contribute in society.

A couple of problems, Jews fleeing Nazis would have been in danger of having their lives and/or basic human rights violated, not because they would have to send their kids to a public school. Big difference, the two cannot be compared.

Secondly, this law was implemented in response to neo-naziism in Germany to prevent parents from indoctrinating their children. If there is one place that I am positive, the values of the Nazis are not being taught it is the German public schools.

Nonsense. Their children will be confiscated and they will be fined and/or imprisoned.

Nonsense. Every home school child I have ever met was well adjusted and excelled more academically than their public school counterparts. It is better for the parents to school a child centered around Christian values than to be indoctrinated into a culture of birth control, gay “marriage” and socialist concepts.
