If you think someone saying that you can’t say Merry Christmas infringes in your rights, then I can’t help you.
Perhaps you’ve never been any place where there is actual oppression?
I agree with you that it’s a little thing–but not really.
Here’s another example.
My daughter has been teaching as a visiting prof at a well-known and very old university in NYC. There are a lot of “rules” that the profs must follow so that the students’ rights are not “threatened” (causing them to sue the university). The rules are complex and it’s easy to unintentionally break them and cause a student to become distressed and file complaints, which can (and have) cost a prof or another university employee to lose their job.
This past Valentine’s Day, my daughter decided to give her grad students Valentines. She made them herself, wrote personal notes to each of her students, enclosed a little gift (some kind of doo-dad which all sexes like), and attached a little bag of Valentine’s candy to each one.
Then she realized–Oh, My God! What if one of the student’s feels “threatened” because I am promoting a CATHOLIC saint’s holiday!!! What if I am reported? What if a student files a lawsuit against the university!!! What if I am fired over these Valentines!!! What I am never able to work again because of giving out Valentines?!!
She called me in tears wondering what she should do. Losing a job in NYC is no joke, especially for an entertainment professional who relies on these “real” jobs to provide an income during a time when there isn’t a paying gig. (Although amazingly, my daughter has never been without a gig in NYC except during the pandemic.)
She finally decided to give her students the Valentines and take the consequences if she was fired.
What happened?
The students LOVED the Valentines. They were so touched and thrilled to have their prof give them a little gift and card on this holiday of love.
But my daughter should not have had to worry about losing her job and reputation over Valentine’s cards. People should not be able to file a lawsuit and get decent people fired because they are “offended” or “traumatized” over Valentines.
THAT’s what this country has come to thanks to the climate of restriction of religion and speech. It’s a disgrace.
It’s no wonder many of us actually ADMIRE Pres. Trump for speaking his mind, even if he does say things that are weird and off the wall and sometimes just stupid. We’re tired of being worried that saying Merry Christmas could get us sued or fired.
By the way, at the end of the semester, my daughter quit that job and took another job at a university in a Midwestern city where there are no ridiculous rules that attempt to bring every thought and action under control of the Political Correctness Secret Police. It’s NYC’s loss.
