Because someone has to actually work outside - shepherd the camels and sheep for example. These people live in arid conditions, it would be silly to blindfold the men and have the women tend to children and the house. The female attire is actually useful in a hot desert scenario, except for the fact that the fabric is black and not white, which heats up more than the white material the men wear.

Note that in the privacy of their homes, the Saudi women wear very risque lingerie for their husbands, but obviously ONLY for their husbands.
Good answer.

Sorry, I’ve taken the thread off topic enough with my remarks. :o

I just wanted to point out that Obama could not possibly be Muslim.
He is not a Muslim. His church for twenty years was of the Black Liberation theology type, which was a perfect environment for someone who was trying to establish himself as a community organizer—not so great a place for an aspiring president to associate with though, of course!

Such as church was politically/theologically affiliated with Farakhan’s Nation of Islam, which also was of the Black liberation theology gender, but that is arguably not Islam either.
I am not sure how much of a role that modesty plays in Black Liberation theology actually, but eye covering is likely not a requirement at this moment in time.

So, in order to shepherd the camels - something the men are only capable of doing when not in danger of erotic fantasy - gangs of thugs have to be employed in enforcing the total covering up of women.

That’s supposed to show the liberated nature of women’s lives in Wahabi Islam?

She’s got Barney Rubble eyes…

(that’s actually what I sing to my wife, since here brown eyes are so dark that you can’t distinguish the retina from the pupil unless you are really up close 🙂 )
Wow.
I imagine that has gotta lead to some hot and lurid loving afterwards, you sweet talker ;)you.

Someone, possibly you, suggested the men should be blindfolded. But do note that this tradition originates from a time when KSA was not a rich oil producer, but a country of nomadic desert people. Yes, under those harsh conditions it made sense to not blindfold the men. Even now the men have to function, and while Pakistanis and Bangladeshis do the most menial and labour intensive of tasks in KSA, the Saudis also work for a living. I should also add that there are Saudis who still live in a nomadic fashion and in pretty primitive conditions. These people have to function somehow, blindfolding them would be pretty silly wouldn’t it? Now I know the blindfold thing is a joke, but I wanted to interject that life in KSA before the oil was pretty tough.

The gangs of thugs you mention are usually reasonably mannered cops. I don’t think they’re gangs of thugs in the sense many of us understand gangs of thugs. I know people, including women who worked in KSA and they had no issues with this, they just had to cover their head and hair with a scarf like Abaya and only go outside their compound with a male escort.

Did it? Did I suggest it or are you putting words in my mouth? Hmmm?

Oh, life’s been tough all around but some societies do manage to grow up.

Somehow, I think you rather approve.

Not quite.
In Saudi Arabia its very much both, the Saudi kingdom is a theocracy, and secular and religious law is the same there.

Islam has many different denominations just like Christianity does.
Yes, but the Saudis are interpreting what the Qur’an means when talking of modesty their own way, hence why its culture rather than religion when they decide how far women should cover up. My friends are still religious, still Muslim, still read the same holy book, yet have different ideas of modesty.

That is a point I often also hear made about the low rate of rape in Japan. However, I’m not sure if it’s really correct. One sometimes hears of honour killings and such but they’re usually reported by organisations with an agenda to push with single cases being highlighted of for example a Muslim girl falling for a Hindu man to be later captured by her family and slain. Muslim fathers and brothers also love their daughters/sisters and as they live with them, they know what they’re like. I doubt most would be fooled into thinking their good Muslim daughter was being promiscuous and un-Islamic in character very easily. It would be great to get some information about this from genuinely neutral organisations and not advocacy groups with biases to push.
Yes, they have an agenda, to tell the world about the horror of honour killings at the risk of their lives at times. Go to some parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan and see for yourself the attitudes towards women and how women are still perceived as property.

I’ve never understood why the obvious answer isn’t for men to be blindfolded outside the house and led around by their mothers.
we need a +1 button around here!

…but i bet women would then be flogged for wearing sexy perfume. …or perhaps they would have to speak through voice modulator’s because the tone of their voices could be considered too arousing. maybe the women can rebel by wearing optimus prime helmets!

clearly the best solution:

I see no need to be careful in this regard. I don’t necessarily judge what a religion is based on the practices of its most peaceful and civilized followers. I judge it from its doctrines and holy books (the supposedly perfect words of the Creator of the Universe). Compulsory veiling and ownership of women are both explicit in Islamic doctrine. That’s why I prefer calling them “fundamentalist Muslims” rather than “extremist Muslims.” Muslims are only ‘extreme’ when their actions and beliefs depart from the fundamentals of Islam.

If you’re a Muslim man who believes that his wife is a true equal to him, then I’m thrilled. I’m also wondering (to myself), what others explicit tenants of the faith they disavow, and to what extent do they consider themselves Muslim.
i couldn’t have said this better myself.

Alcohol actually leads to disinhibition. But rape/sexual assault is much less common in Muslim countries than in the West.
Ha…

No:mad:

No that’s not in any shape, manner, or form, true.
Rape, and other forms of sexual assault are almost never reported in Muslim countries because even when its proved in court that the woman was assaulted (which is very hard since a woman’s testimony counts for only half a man’s under Islamic law), the victim may still be punished.

And a common form of punishment in those situations for the woman is stoning.

Why are you acting as an apologist for the brutal and misogynistic Saudi regime?

I believe the proper term is keeper.

Only 2.7% of reported rapes end in a conviction here in the UK. Does that mean that 97.3% of women are lying? Find out whether these statistics you’re looking at are based on successful convictions or charity statistics/police reports.

Are you aware what the legal standards are for man to be convicted of rape in Saudi Arabia? The woman must have 4 male witnesses to the crime. No less. That is, if it even gets to court before she’s charged with adultery. Most women who claim to be raped are sentenced to corporal punishment for adultery.

So, the statistics may be less because either convictions are low, or because the crimes happen yet the woman is blamed for the crime and gets convicted of adultery. In a male-dominated society, where rape is essentially a male-caused crime, you are going to find low statistics. Don’t forget also that to claim rape a woman has to admit to having sexual intercourse, ruining her chance for marriage (only virgins will do).

I used to get into some real harsh debates when my Protestant friends would demand an apology for the crusades and I returned with “I am sorry we didn’t go far enough.”

I don’t have to make that stand so much anymore now that harsh lights are being shined upon the Muslim faith.
