being a pro choice voter does not mean that one personally
believes in a “pro abortion” position

Let’s face it there are both sides of the isle voting to fund abortions for the poor, etc.

I want no abortion and no war/s! Both lofty and good Catholic ideals to strive for, ok? tks
You are correct. Yet to be a pro-choice voter promotes abortions and places roadblocks in the protection of life.

Abortion is one of the nonnegotiables war is not. So we can vote for or against a war after we vote pro-life with our well formed conscience.

In fact being a pro-choice [in regards to abortion] does make one a promoter of abortion [and that affirmative position allows for abortion on demand]…

We as christins must work for justice … we must work for peace, we must promote morality …

Killing the child in the womb … the falilure to protect the most innocent of life … actually demeans all life … promoting abortion increases war and a war response … it is the root to the denigration of the human person

… if a mother can kill her unborn child, then she can equally kill the 2 year old child?

… if a father has no say in the life of his unborn child why should he feel responsibility for the 10 year old?

…If I can take the life of the unborn becuase it is inconvenient … then why not my 75 year old parent, equally inconvenient?

Or the inconvenient neighboring nation?

Abortion is always and intrinsically evil … yesterday, today and tomorrow …

A christian cannot life their baptismal promises in Christ and be “Pro-choice” … they cannot morally vote for laws that allow abortion, fund abortion or promote abortion …

If it has not already been mentioned on this thread, the Pope spoke eloquently on this very topic while he was here.

How then does one explain the position of the Massachusetts congressman Father Drinan, who has a 100% perfect pro-abortion record in Congress and was never excommunicated from the Catholic Church?

Because of the scandal of that Jesuit priest in congress, the Holy See has forbidden priests to run for congress.

Sadly, there are no Jesuit colleges in America that are on the approved list of Catholic colleges. I say “sadly” because I graduated from a Jesuit college back in the days when we were taught Catholicism.

I personally would not base my decisions about what is moral upon the voting record of Father Drinan but upon the teachiing of the chruch … Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, the catechism, all teach that abortion is always an intrinsic evil … do you doubt that? Do you believe that abortion is a moral good, if so how?

Even the Didache lists abortion [specifically] as a sinful action …

And by his voting record faterh Drinan excommunicated himself … something I hope he will rectify if he has not already …

Excommunication is not so much an action of the church as in permanently seperating a person … A formal sancton by the church is not necessary for a person to be out of fellowship with Christ and the Chruch …

It is a wake-up call for the individual to turn away from sin, seek Christ, seek reconcilliation and return to the baptismal promises …

Of course abortion is wrong. My question has to do with why the Catholic authorities and hierarchy saw fit to have a Catholic Jesuit priest as a US member of Congress voting so solidly and firmly in favor of abortion rights.

But that is the fa,acy of your thought … the Jesuit priest decided on his own to run for congress …

It is not the Church [authorities and/or hierarchy] who decided that the priest become a member of the US congress … the chruch has no influence on who does or does not hold a congressional position nor did they instruct Fr. Drinan’s votes as if he was representing the Church by his election… Fr. Drinan decided to run in a district and the voters of that disctrict elected him … Ffr. Drinan voted in a manner that was in violation of his Christian profession … it also violated the moral law that is universal as abortion is always evil no matter your faith, your race, your religion, your political affliation … abortion is an instrinsic evil …

As other posters have noted … the voting record of priests elected to office [Fr. Drinan and others] led the Church to place a prohibition upon priests … they cannot hold elected office and maintain their priesty faculties … if a priest chooses to run for political office they are laicized…

Kerry and Dodd were photographed receiving Holy Communion. Kennedy dutifully stayed in his seat at Communion.

There were no EMHCs used at any papal Masses, thank the Lord! The plan was to use them and the Holy Father got wind of it and said, ‘no way’.

“Kennedy dutifully stayed in his seat at Communion.”

Dutifully might not be the best choice of words. . .

CORRECTION: Ted Kennedy DID Receive Communion at the Papal Mass

Priest made special trip to give communion to the outspokenly pro-abortion Senator several minutes before everyone else began to receive

Hey man, whatever helps you sleep at night after voting for a Dem.

By the by…have you seen what abortion does to unborn babies?

Enjoy. kthxbai

I didn’t see where this happened in the case of the most pro-abortion congressman in U.S. history, the Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, Father Drinan.

Or in the case of Fr. Raymond Gravel, who is currently a member of Parliament in Canada.
Gravel also claimed that while he is pro-life, he believes “when a fetus is in its mother’s womb, they are one being,” and that it is not a child until it leaves the womb, a definition of human being he says the Supreme Court [of Canada] endorsed in 1969.

If the Pope beleives what he says about the reception of communion, what the church teaches, then why at least at his Mass can this not be enforced?!

Frankly the excuses are telling. The extraordinary ministers did it. Yes, the Pope could have had these handpicked. but didn’t.

Does he not beleive what he preaches? Is he just fearful of a schism in the West that would finacially cripple the church?

He’d be better to act even if in fear as peter did.

His visit is turning into a major disappointment IMO.
I hate to admit it, but I do share some of your frustrations. It is just so hard for me to reconcile what I know to be the Holy Father’s position (elucidated in his many writings) on pro-abort politicians and the events that transpired at this Mass.

If it is true that nothing could have been done to prevent this, then my question would be what authority do our Shepards have? If the Bishops won’t do it, and the priests won’t do it, and our Pope CAN’T do it, where does that leave us? How do we evangelize the truth to those who would claim they are entitled to receive Communion, no matter what Church teaching they have publicly dissented from, when we have very public examples like this that make us all look like zealous, fanatical, narrow-minded, Midieval fools?

The scandal that may have been created by turning these folks away would be a scandal only to those who perhaps NEED to be shaken up. Would any one of us who faithfully refrain from the Eucharist at the smallest infraction have been scandalized or would we have FINALLY felt the longed for support of our leaders?

Divorce is not a sin, remarriage without annulment is the sin. Divorced people may receive all the Sacraments.
It is my “impression” that divorced Catholics must obtain the permission of the Chruch (somehow) to be divorced and allowed to receive the Sacraments.

The replies that I get are preaching to the choir

I urge you to examine the fact that I am for eradicating
abortion and making it illegal will not achieve that end.

I believe that a divine solution is necessary.

In the meantime we must as Christ put it, “Render under Caesar what is … and render unto God what is God’s”!

I am trapped with the realities of one party promoting War, Big Business, and Big Tobbacco(all not “ProLife” views) and the other allowing one the ability to do as Jesus did and keep the government out of deciding for a woman whether or not she should have an abortion. I do believe that we need to continue to educate women and all about the choice that they may make with regard to even considering an abortion. I don’t think the solution is a legal one as it did not prevent women from getting them throughout history.
Even catholic women got abortions when it was illegal and when it was immoral in their own faith. Women will make wrong choices no matter what the circumstance no different than us men. I agree that we all need to keep forming our consciences to be compatible with what Jesus wants for us and all. I too will defend the unborn, but I will not force my view on others. Why? Well, my role model, Jesus, was that way and that is good enough for me. He said, “Come follow me” and he turned and walked. He never forced anyone to do things His way. I like people to do things my way, much like most people, but I really admire one who operates like Jesus and just puts it out there and walks. If this sounds simplistic, well so be it, but I trust in Jesus for the answers and not our egos or our interpretations of our faith/Church for the automatic answers. There are no answers without God’s divine intervention on this subject. In the meantime
I will continue to pray for some better human ways of dealing with the matter of the unborn being unprotected.
It is a tough issue for me, as it is for you too, but how we go about effecting change is quite different.

Amen and peace be to you and yours,

I’m a little confused here. A man marries a woman and has a family and then decides to divorce his wife and abandon his family after 15 years of marriage, since he prefers the single life. You tell me that it is not a sin to refuse to live up to your family and marriage committments? Where did you hear this teaching?
I think the post referred to whether one could accept the sacrament of Communion. I don’t think anyone would say that the husband abandoning his family did not sin. But consider the divorced wife then, is she to be barred from receiving communion? As long as she does not marry again, it is my understanding that she is not barred. And as for the husband, as long as he does not marry again, and confesses his sin, I believe the Church allows him to accept communion as well.

The argument you use to oppose laws that make abortion illegal could be applied to all laws. All laws either require or forbid certain actions, that is, they disallow choice in specific areas, something you claim that Jesus never did. Do you then oppose all laws because Jesus never forced his opinions on others?

I didn’t see where this happened in the case of the most pro-abortion congressman in U.S. history, the Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, Father Drinan.
Well, Fr… Drinan ran before Rome said that priests could not hold public office … and laicization may not be the only option … a priest can only function in his priestly role under the authoization of the local ordinary … the bishop …

A priest cannot offer Mass in another diocese without the permission of the local ordinary … and inside his diocese the bishop can suspend the faculties [if permanent by laization - temporarily - I don;t know what they call it] …

And a pro abortion priest is not following the dictates of the church or the universal moral law … can you illustrate otherwise in any official church document … even Pope JPII said that the right to life is foundational to all other social justice aspects … after ll … you don’t have to figure out how to feed the dead child, educate them, or provide other basic necessities …

As for one party being for abortion and the other party being for war, etc … that is just so wrong …

One party has a plank that states that abortion is a right, the other party has a statemet that reflects the dignity of the human person and against abortion … neither party has planks supporting war …

One party believes that it is government’s job to provide all services [health care, welfare, etc] through rules, regulations and governemnt programs in an effort to reduce poverty … the other party believes that governement should not create huge agencies to oversee health care and welfare as these programs keep people in poverty …

the truth lies somewhere … but neither party wants to create poverty … and poeple of good will can disagree on how best to assit the single mother on welfare improve her state in life … one might say she needs $500 per month in food stamps the other only $350 … one might say that she should receive this benefit until her children graduate for high school, the other limit it for a period of time with an expectation that the woman return to work … both positions have plusses and minuses … both positions have room for negotiation and compromise …

With abortion … the child is alive or dead … there is no negotiation or compromise … you cannot abort half a baby…

That is why parties matter on one level … how can you support a party whose plank is the killing of the unborn? …

But you must also ultimately look to the indivdual … some members of both parties are pro-abortion and some are pro-life … they other issues you can find common ground and let your positions be known …

and businesses [big and small] are necessary and are a good for society … they are not de facto evil …
