I, for one, completely agree with her and found myself feeling somewhat embittered by the vitriolic claims that she was exploiting the Nativity story and the festive holiday in the interests of narrow political opportunism and just couldn’t give it a break to honour the sacred day.

The fact is that in fleeing Judea for Egypt - with nursing mother and child in toe - to escape the despotism and paranoia of King Herod in Judea, as he set about murdering baby boys, the Holy Family did become prototypes for families the world over and throughout history, who are forced by war, famine, discrimination or desperation to uproot themselves and seek shelter in an alien land for their personal safety.

There is undeniable social commentary at the heart of the Christmas story and of Christianity more generally. This is is evident to everyone who studies the texts in detail.
Thank you for this, thank you. I refuse as a Catholic to change traditional lines of thinking to conform to the narrative of D. Trump, whether it’s morality in business dealings, honoring ones vows as husband or wife, or our long standing Christmas Tradition regarding our understanding of the travel of Mary and Joseph.

So. She still won the primary. And she won the general election getting 78.2% of the vote.
And what does this has to do with " Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez compares refugees to baby Jesus"
You have to follow the thread of posts sometimes, not everything is 100% on target for the OP, there are tangential sub threads.

Besides moving from province of a political entity to another part of that same political entity, another difference between the Holy Family and the illegal aliens at the border is this. Joseph had a useful skillset and the Holy Family went home after a few years.

On the other hand, once we pay the illegalgeld, we will never be rid of the illegals
Most illegal immigrants would thankfully not be illegal immigrants. They would willingly go home after a few years if the opportunity presented itself. And most do have useful skills. Many are carpenters just like St. Joseph was. Others farm workers. Others seamstresses. Others masons. Others nannies. Others maids. Name a skill and I’m sure there are many that can and would do a fine job filling it. Many would love a chance to contribute safely and legally while in the US, and then return to their homes and families once circumstances allow it.

I do not believe in open borders. I believe border security is a top issue and believe our laws should be followed. I also believe our laws should be amended and adjusted to reality, not based on racial discrimination and assumptions made by scary and inaccurate, made up statistics. I am not opposed to “building a wall,” but i find it a really misguided belief that it would improve border security. I think it is a waste of time and money better spent elsewhere. I believe that Border Patrol Agents are unfairly hated upon. The money for the wall would be better spent on improving their numbers, training, and public image. I am not opposed to having our military guarding the border. However, none of those things are solutions. True solutions will only be found by depoliticizing immigration, rewriting laws in a way that favors our neighboring countries (similar to laws favoring Canada), and accepting that maybe “unskilled workers” have an awful lot to contribute to our society.

Edited to add:

Many immigrants would love to obtain education and training for “higher skilled” jobs, and then return to their homes in order to give back to their own communities. I know a lady who came to the US, became a midwife, and has returned to her town to work there. Many other people have done similar with other jobs.

I think that proposals grounded in this reality would enjoy wide bipartisan support in Congress.

Ocasio Cortez is pro-homosexuality and pro-abortion. When she distorts the story of the Holy Family she has no credibility with me.

The significance of the Nativity is eternal and in no way subject to political opinion.

Yet another problem with mass legal and illegal immigration. They bring our wages down. Our blue collar workers do not need a metaphorical kick in the teeth.

The reality is that most illegal aliens are coming from the south since that is the easiest way to access the country. The reality is that 3rd world nations are using us as a way to export their problems. “They’re sending people that have a lot of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” (President Donald Trump)

Walls work. Just ask the Israelis.

Immigration will only be depoliticized when Democrats stop using it as way to gain voters. I see no reason why Mexico or Canada should be favored over other countries. Importing the 3rd world does not solve our problems or the 3rd world’s problems. They were incapable of maintaining civilization in their homelands, they are unable to help it here. The only viable solution is to bring the 1st world to them.

Brain drain is a real problem that keeps 3rd world countries down. They get the skills but stay here instead of making their countries great for the first time. This hurts our high skilled people

Very true. And all the pandering by all the pro-abortion, nominal Catholic politicians in the world can’t change these facts.

I guess baby is only a refugee after he is born. Until then he just a blob of tissue that can be expelled.

Yes. So much concern for illegal aliens in our country on the part of those who advocate or condone the slaughter of unborn human beings.

I doubt we would need any immigration if we were not aborting and contracepting our future.

Walls work.
The places most of the illegal immigrants are crossing are over the wall we already have. It is a very high wall that is regularly climbed. It is not working because we don’t have enough Border Patrol to do anything about the ones hopping the wall. It is not working and expanding it won’t work either. Only increasing agents will help and that isn’t happening.

The wall is a false sense of security. Our border is nothing at all like the Israeli border. They have their military to guard their wall. What will we have? We will have tons of unguarded wall being crossed just like we do now.

How do I know people are crossing? Google pictures and you will see tons of them. A pregnant woman in labor just recently climbed the wall and entered. She gave birth in the US soon afterwards. It isn’t a wall only olympians can climb regardless of what some people may say or believe.

Even though the OP is a bit of a stretch, nevertheless you make a valid point, namely do we care enough about people in peril to be willing to do something to try and help them, which I would suggest is a major teaching within the gospels as well as Torah?

I tend to agree, and Trump’s statement as to why we are not seeing more people like “Norwegians” here and also his calling a judge “Mexican” who was born and raised in Indiana are just a couple of other examples of Trump’s racist statements and actions. And the fact that he has the support of so many white supremacists is quite telling as well, along with his hesitation in denouncing David Duke plus his support for Arpaio and Moore that are known racists.

No, if they are banking good money, they stay and keep earning the good money. They keep saving and probably buy more real estate back home as retirement investment.

It doesn’t matter that many have useful skills and are hard working. They are taking opportunity away from our most vulnerable citizens, the ones who really really need these lower skilled jobs.

The judge in question was a member of La Raza. By pointing out the bias of the judge, Trump was concurring with the self-professed wise Latina who admits that her race and gender affect her decisions.

No racist statements, no racist actions, just a man who wants to make America great again and that means not being constantly passive-aggressive against white Americans like 44 was.

Judge Curiel (I assume that’s who you’re talking about) was a member of the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, a professional association of Latino lawyers. It’s a pretty non-controversial organization, typical of ethnically-based lawyers’ organizations around the country, much like, say, the Irish-American Bar Association of New York.

There are many organizations with the phrase “La Raza” in their names. Some of them may advocate for positions with which you disagree. The organization of which Judge Curiel was a member is not related to other associations with those words in their names. It’s really no big deal. Trump was not “pointing out the bias of the judge,” he was assuming it with no evidence whatsoever. I would say it’s more demonstrative of bias on then-candidate Trump’s part.

As to Trump “concurring with the self-professed wise Latina who admits that her race and gender affect her decisions,” he was in no way “concurring” with Justice Sotomayor, because she admits no such thing.

Huh? How was Barack Obama “constantly passive-aggressive against white Americans?” How was he against white Americans at all?

It doesn’t work that way at all. I am all for helping the poor, but no one is lining up to take the jobs that illegal immigrants are taking. Farmers will advertise state and sometimes nation wide for workers. If they have any show up, they don’t stay for the length of the job. I am positive it is the same for other industries. I have seen first hand people claiming to need a job, any job, and when they finally get one, they work for a few days max and them quit. People complain about low wages, but no one wants prices to go up to cover higher wages either. Illegal immigrants are not getting rich. Most live below the poverty line and still manage to send money home to support family back home. And yes, most would love to be able to return home. My parents were legally here and would have loved to go back to Bolivia. Even with dementia, mom remembered home
