A simple test of hearing the “news” - is the nature of the subject factual and shared through identified sources AND are slanted, hate descriptions, salacious gossip repeated? These are big “stay away from” sources that further nothing but money making subject matter. As you said, if it disgusts you, don’t watch it! May I add: don’t believe it and don’t repeat it!

I personally don’t believe any news station is fake news. Every time I hear somebody (including our president…) refer to a news station as “fake news”, they just don’t like that they have a different opinion. While I do consider every news station biased to some degree, I wouldn’t consider any of them to be “fake news”.

There are stories that are simply made up that get to the news.

This has been going on for a very long time. Look up Joey Skaggs, he has been pulling off what he calls “pranks” for a very long time.

Falling for a prank is still not the same thing as faking the news. I think the more common error (especially in internet media) is lack of journalistic effort. Bach when we only had two wire sources, errors were few. Now, a story can be passed around without those reporting it on their site ever calling or checking the original source. Even with the TV, major networks have been victimized by lazy reporters failing to confirm stories, NBC (Brian Williams), FOX (Bill O’Reilly), etc. The thing is, sometimes the anchor takes the heat for a report taking shortcuts. Also, this problem is simply a part of reporting the news, and will always exist. It does not make the news fake any more than an error on the part of the president makes him a fake president.

Adam, journalists have a code of ethics they are to follow in fairly presenting the news.

It’s not about differing opinions.

So, is Fox and Friends news or opinion. I know Hannity says he is an entertainer not a journalist.

The other stations admit they have opinion shows. Where does Fox fall in the mix?

Fox is the most commentary heavy of the cable newsertainment stations.

Aren’t the three primetime shows primarily commentary?

Sean Hannity is basically the Trump appreciation hour.

I’m not very comfortable with Laura Ingrahm featuring Raymond Arroyo so frequently.

Honestly, I’ve not watched either primetime NOR the major cable networks for a decade (except when they are forced on me by others watching).

Do you think CNN uses fake news to lead you astray? As intended to control ?
I think they pander to their leftist base, and only occasionally lean center, once in a very blue moon could they lean even slightly right.

They are trying to convince you of their view + report something that actually happened. Sometimes their view completely twists what actually happened so that you don’t have real knowledge any longer.

I’m just going to chime in and say that the 24-hour news cycle has been horrific for society in general. None of them get a pass, none are worse/better than any other.

No, of course not. “Fake news” is an oxymoron. If it’s fake, it’s not news; if it’s news, it’s not fake.

As @pnewton said, news can be biased, but I think CNN reports facts. They can be checked. If they report that someone tweeted something then contradicted himself, it can be checked.

I watch CNN because they present both sides. They have pro and con, and opinion pieces are called “opinion pieces” to distinguish them from facts.

Please give us an example.

Opinion shows are justifiably allowed greater flexibility, but the actual news shows on ALL networks do need to reacquaint themselves with their code of ethics. I think if the news programs practiced ethical behavior, that would bleed into opinion programs being more even handed in presenting their take on the issues.

Naturally where Hannity or any other opinion show blatantly misrepresent the facts, they should be ‘hauled over the carpet’ for their error.

Yet what president hasn’t lied…and multiple times?
Not like this… not in my living years
🤔 You must be very young. 😆
he’s accomplished more in his first 500 days than any of the other previous 44 presidents

Me thinks Steve is emulating Mr Trumps, eh hem, hyperbole.
As I said previously, I try and leave emotionalism out of the equation. I’m about Keeping things like this, clinical and objective. His actual accomplishments are not hyperbole.

Really?
I think ALL media has a bias. The news media has historically always had a bias. Some newspapers have a conservative bend to them, while others a liberal bend. This has existed for a long time.

Yes!!! A sane level of bias diversity is good. Our problem is that many news papers are not as well financed as they used to and TV news had gone from an FCC required service so non-stop talking heads on for profit news. Cable news is about drama, anger, and dumpster files to keep you watching. Most non-NPR talk radio is angry conservative men shouting into a microphone. We can isolate ourselves with people you only share our views.

News is mostly not “fake”. The problem is that journalistic quality has dropped. I’ve encountered people who think I am using “fake” as a source of my opinion of our President. The reality is mine is shaped by things he publicly says, stated policies, and tweets. These all his own unfiltered words. The stark reality is that he does things none of us would take from our children. Why someone would think that a negative reaction to this kind of behavior is fake is beyond me, especially from a President. The greatest irony is that Trump would not let go of the conclusively debunked Birther conspiracy theory for years after it was. Talk about real fake news.

The other thing cable news has contributed for the worse is that guests are brought in from both sides to have a debate. Fine enough, but sometimes, in the name of “balance”, one side might represent the opinion of a fringe belief. …and sorry denial of climate change is one of them.
