For better or worse, rapidly developed Covid vaccines are on the way. If your bishop were to shortly decree that due to public health concerns....."

If Cvid is ‘just a flu’ (albeit an unusually severe nd infectious one) then these are in essence “just” flu vaccines.
Covid19 is not the Influenza. These comparisons are inaccurate and confusing.

Coronaviruses are notoriously hard to make effective vaccines for. As far as I know, this will be the first of its kind.

Not true for several reasons:
  1. Flu is caused by an influenza virus, for which a multitude of vaccines have been created, very safely and very effectively, whereas Covid 19 is a coronavirus, for which a vaccine has never been created, and not for want of trying.
  2. Many of the Covid vaccines in production are RNA vaccines. An RNA vaccine has never been produced before for public use.
  3. Hasty vaccines in times of pandemics have a history of imperfection and unsafety. Look at the swine flu vaccine from several years ago.
So I think I’ll be forgiven for passing on this one.

Personally I don’t know… but I honestly struggle trying to imagine a planet of humans willing to live in quarantine for five years, over a virus with such a low death rate for most.
A very contagious virus like COVID can have a low death rate and kill a whole lot of people — as it has already. There are viruses like Ebola that are much more deadly in and of themselves that don’t kill nearly as many people because they aren’t nearly as contagious. So the danger of the virus is not the % of infected people that die alone — it is also how easily it is spread. And COVID spreads very easily, and is deadly enough to rack up an awful body count.

COVID can be pretty nasty stuff, and it is extremely contagious — hence why we have to be so careful.

How long do people think it takes to develop tge average flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine in general took a long time to develop, a long time ago. The seasonal variants that come out every year are just that: variants. The basic vaccine is “tweaked” for the specific strain that is expected to hit the country that it is being developed for to get more time for development and manufacture/distribution. Sometimes they misread the patterns and a different strain than the one prepared for is predominant.
If Cvid is ‘just a flu’
But it really isn’t “just a flu” notwithstanding that pronouncement made (by someone not qualified to make it) early on. It is actually a variant of SARS, so the fact that we get a “new” flu vaccine pretty much annually has no bearing on the development of the Covid (aka SARS-CoV-2) vaccine.

A Bishop has already spoken out against potential vaccines. https://dioceseoffresno.org/ “the use of fetal stem cell material at any stage a vaccine’s development means it would be off limits to Catholics” The three current potential vaccines Moderns, Pfizer (used in testing), and AstraZenica-Oxford all use HEK 293 (Human Embryonic Kidney Cells) so they are unethical. https://cogforlife.org/ see Covid-19 document.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Life and Family considers both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines as ethical according to this analysis:

The supposed connection to aborted fetal cell lines in patents does not cite the correct Moderna patent related to its vaccines, and the cites in the incorrect patent are to research concept examples unrelated to the actual vaccine production. Some Moderna collaborators (NIAID/UT) did use abortion-derived HEK293 cells to produce viral spike protein to test its shape and antibody binding, but their test did not determine the design or production of the nucleic acid sequence, and in fact was done only after Moderna had already determined the genetic sequence needed, developed their mRNA sequence vaccine, and begun production of the mRNA vaccine. Moderna is not producing a spike protein for its vaccine, nor does it use cell lines (aborted fetal cell or otherwise) in the production of this mRNA vaccine. Moderna’s vaccine is mRNA (instructions) that tells the body how to produce its own spike protein. Bottom line, Moderna vaccine production does not utilize aborted fetal cells and its design did not rely upon aborted fetal cells.

Ethical
: Novavax ($1.6B); Moderna ($954.9M); Merck ($38M); Sanofi ($2.07B); Pfizer-BioNTech ($1.95B) for a total of $6.5B .

Unethical : J&J ($456M); AstraZenca ($1.2B); Vaxart ($0) for a total of $1.65B .

There are also 99 different rhinoviruses that can make you sick. No vaccine for those either.

I heard yesterday on the news that soon airlines may require you to show you have been immunized before you can fly…that my dear friends is the beginning…

Also, some of us who have preexisting conditions are not good candidates for the vaccine…a vaccine we have NO idea of what the repercussions will be down the line…

There is no “one size fits all” answer to this…my guess?

Just as mysteriously and as devastating in the past with plagues like for instance in more recent history the Spanish Flu, this one will too just suddenly disappear.

That’s nature folks…or more worrisome…”that’s man fiddling in the lab with things they ought not"

It seems to have mutated and be weakening already. Making this push up a vaccine even more unnecessary and suspicious.

That’s fatalistic. Why does it seem like this kind of fatalism is so big in the church. God have us hearts and minds not only to worship him
But help each other. I guess then this life must not matter to some.

I agree…and we know it has already mutated numerous times from the original Wuh-an strain…

To edit: If we are being told the truth it has already jumped species.

The Spanish Flu infected around 1/3 of the people on earth. People debate the death toll, but it is probably at least 17 million, while some estimates put it at over 50 million. It lasted around 2 years.

Lets hope COVID is not like the Spanish Flu.

I wouldn’t be going to Mass.

No bishop has the right to tell me I must inject chemicals into my body, especially ones rushed through without having any idea what the long-term impacts of those chemicals might be.

Why do you ask such a question? What is your point?
But aren’t all medicines ‘chemicals’? If not what’s the difference between vaccines and other medications that makes vaccines ‘chemicals’ and other medicines not chemicals?

I say let’s not hope but pray it doesn’t meet up with another devastating virus and mutate again…say TB or hepatitis, or I hate to even think, as it is airborne, some form of ebola.
That is my greatest fear with this virus.

The truth is…nobody really knows what will happen…and if they tell you they do they are being deceitful, as has been the case with this stuff from the beginning…we just do not know.
And we in no way have enough data and time from any new vaccine to know what it may or may not do.
Reference the Cutter Laboratories incident with polio as an example of rushed vaccines…

If the medical profession offers me a vaccine for Covid-19 I will take it. I’m not going to demand that they first spend years proving it works. The need is now.
How did that work out in the case of the thalidomide babies.

Their mothers also had an immediate need.
Do you think any Covid vaccine is going to be like thalidomide?
Do you think this of all new vaccines or just the covid vaccine?

I say let’s not hope but pray
For an end to the spread of COVID and the recovery of the sick, as well as God’s mercy on those who have died is a regular part of my daily prayers.
Well said, I too have found myself also praying this at mass when we pray for specific intentions…
