And what if it turns out to be true? Then what?
We are talking about something that is old news, that has been thoroughly debunked, and that is being presented by someone who tried the exact same thing not long ago with another ossuary that was proven to be a forgery. I do not think we have to worry about it being true.

I don’t want to get to off topic, but the use of BCE and CE really, really annoys me. Why do people feel the need to do it? As far as I’m concerned, it is BC and AD. Shame on Professor Amos Kloner
They feel the need to do it because it is just another small part of the overall attack on Christianity. The world changed because of the life of Jesus Chirst. Our whole method of dating history changed in acknowledgement of that. Changing the term does not change that fact. When ever you talk to someone who insists on using the bogus term ask them why time became a “common era” at that exact point in history. It is fun to watch them try to wiggle out of that one.

You know, this is interesting stuff, and unfortunately, the current climate will EAT IT UP! Folks who don’t understand their faith to get beyond this mere argument that Jesus was never resurrected may have problems getting past that. I know that in reading that article myself for the first time, I sort of had a reaction like, woah… but, have thought more about it, AND thanks to the reaffirming comments in this forum have helped me.

I would like to note that James Cameron is a Freemason, and I understand he’s 33rd Degree Freemason - which would really explain quite a lot. The Church knew what she was doing when she condemned this group and other like secret societies.

The problem here is that it isn’t true. And the saddest thing is that James Cameron knows that this information isn’t new, but he wants so badly to discredit Christianity, and to be the herald of “rationality,” that he is willing to deceive in order to do it.

Dan Brown knows that his book drew a lot of tenuous links between things that aren’t related, and that he made up lots of information that he allowed to be taken as proven fact.

The truly sad thing about situations like this is that the people involved are so convinced that they have to prove that religion is wrong, that it must be discredited, that they will intentionally misrepresent facts and even outright lie to get the outcome that they wish.

I can understand (even if I don’t agree with) a scientist saying that he cannot find proof of God, nor of Christ’s return to life, and so is skeptical. What is a shame is that this is not the stance that is taken by the current “rational” community in popular culture. They begin with the “truth” that God cannot exist because they don’t believe, and then search for proof to confirm their belief. They violate the tenants of their own belief system (self professed to be rational science) in order to find a result that is acceptable to them.

And what if it turns out to be true? Then what?
Then all the eye witnesses in the New Testament, and the “over 500 people” that St. Paul refers to in 1 Corinthians 15were under mass halucination. There comes a time when the evidence is so overwhelming that we have to ignore the agnostics and heathen with their newly produced, or warmed over, fake discoveries.

Dr. Simon Greenleaf was one of the early professors of law at Harvard Law School. Dr. Greenleaf was an agnostic and in fact would often disparage those of Christian faith. Even today, he is considered one of the finest legal minds this country ever produced and his work on permissable evidence in a court of law is still considered to be the “bible” on the subject. One of Dr. Greenleaf’s Christian students challenged him to use his rules of evidence to investigate the claim of the resurrection. After a two or three year investigation he was converted to Christ and wrote a very large work on the results of his investigation.

It has all been documented and proven true to any person with a reasonable mind. But the diabolical brotherhood will never cease their relentless attack. Spiritual warfare will go on until Christ returns.

How many Christians will believe this film…that Jesus’, Mary’s and Mary Magdalene’s remains have been found?
Here is some history on this tomb…this discovery isn’t “new”.

It appears to me that satan and those who want to destroy Christianity are once again found a way to ‘mislead’ those of weak faith. Once The DiVinci Code film flopped, the movie industry has found another angle. Hopefully, this film will fail as well.

Get the printing presses started!
It looks like another ‘100 questions about…’ book is gonna have to be made about this film too, considering that the Proof has been documented by Dr. Greenleaf. Apparently the weak faith Christians would forget about the 500 witnesses who saw Jesus after his resurrection.

Another reason why this film is coming out…Easter is coming and it a ‘matter of timing’.

Oscar-winning film director James Cameron and credited Jewish archaeologist and documentarian Simcha Jacobovici have claimed one of histories’ greatest discoveries: the remains of the Jesus Christ

A new documentary called “The Lost Tomb of Jesus,” premiering on Sunday, Mar. 4, on the Discovery Channel, has asserted that it has credible evidence of the remains of Christ and his descendants, including a supposed son, Judah, who Jesus had with Mary Magdalene.

The film has already roused up debate among Christians, who base their faith on the resurrection of Jesus Christ; the existence of Jesus’ remains would negate his ascension.

I’m kind of skeptical on this one. I don’t think that I will follow the lemmings.

On another note… you married your best friend? Congratulations!

I look forward to Catholic Answers writing a really SMASHING rebuttal of this idiocy.

I’m sure the non-believers will make a huge stink of this.

This is not only not news (tomb was discovered in 1980), it is pretty obviously nonsense. Here are a couple of articles on the topic from the Jerusalem post and MSNBC. The second article in particular gives some of the history involved here and shows how unfounded the whole claim is.

New film claims Jesus buried in Talpiot

and

Raiders of the Lost Tomb

A few money quotes from the articles…

From Jerusalem post article:*
'But Bar-Ilan University Prof. Amos Kloner, the **Jerusalem District archeologist who officially oversaw the work at the tomb in 1980 **and has published detailed findings on its contents, on Saturday night dismissed the claims. “It makes a great story for a TV film,” he told The Jerusalem Post. "But it’s impossible. It’s nonsense."

Kloner, who said he was interviewed for the new film but has not seen it, said the names found on the ossuaries were common, and the fact that such apparently resonant names had been found together was of no significance. He added that “Jesus son of Joseph” inscriptions had been found on several other ossuaries over the years."

“**There is no likelihood that Jesus and his relatives had a family tomb,” Kloner said. “They were a Galilee family with no ties in Jerusalem. The Talpiot tomb belonged to a middle-class family from the 1st century CE.”

*** From the MSNBC article***:
*"Simcha has no credibility whatsoever," says Joe Zias, who was the curator for anthropology and archeology at the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem from 1972 to 1997 and personally numbered the Talpiot ossuaries. "He’s pimping off the Bible … He got this guy Cameron, who made ‘Titanic’ or something like that—what does this guy know about archeology? I am an archeologist, but if I were to write a book about brain surgery, you would say, ‘Who is this guy?’ People want signs and wonders. Projects like these make a mockery of the archeological profession." Cameron’s reply: “I don’t profess to be an archeologist or a Biblical scholar. I’m a film producer. I found it compelling. I think we’re on firm ground to say that much.”

Hope these help.

I think skepticism is warranted here.

It has been pretty clear for a couple of hundred years that the entire edifice of Christianity is nothing but ancient mythology, based on and/or extrapolated from even more ancient mythologies, with no basis in reality whatsoever. This new documentary is wrong not because there was a Jesus who was the Christ, but because there never was - no more than there was a Hercules, a Horus, a Mithra or any other of the deities invented in the mind of man all through the eons of time and promoted by the priesthoods of the time. That’s not to say that the ethics and morality of christianity are not good, but they aren’t exclusively christian either, since they were adopted almost entirely from the Roman philosophy/playwright Seneca, who himself took them from the Stoic philosophy.

The world will be a much better place for all once mankind finally grows up and grows out of the need to believe in fairy tales dieties, and can then find a way to live based on respect for humankind itself.

The carbon dating test results should be intersting to say the least, which ever way they go…

I get so tired of these claims but I guess when they claim to have (good) science on their side we might as well take a listen.

There was a live interview with the director today on Toronto radio (cfrb.com) and his response to the fact that Jesus/Mary/Joseph, etc were common names was that he took the information to statisticians and while they are common for the time period, it is statisically unusual that they would all be lumped together as a family. He defended himself in the radio interview by saying he brought the information to professionals, archeologists, DNA experts and statisticians. He said that the facts from the findings of these professionals are out there for other professionals to test and see if they come up with the same conclusions. He believes they will because he didn’t go to crack-pot professionals - apparently highly respected people in their field (I have no way of knowing if that’s true or not as it’s out of my league).

What made me laugh is that if Jesus did marry Mary and they were buried together, what does that do to the other claims that Mary had to escape to France and is buried there? Or if Jesus did marry Mary and have a child, well then, what about the claims that he was homosexual (as per the second “Gospel” of Mark?).

I hope we hear in the media the replies from really well established and reputable people who take the information and do their own analysis. I don’t think it’s wise for Christians to just label it as all tom-foolery and not seriously review the “hard evidence”.

Your failure to grasp even the most basic elements of historical study is truly amazing.

Is Socrates a myth as well?

What’s the qualitative difference between the historical evidence for Socrates and the historical evidence for Jesus?

Silly. Just plain silly. Now go on - try and substantiate your silliness with historical evidence. Why would you believe that Socrates existed and that Jesus did not?

God Bless,
RyanL

P.S.,
The world will be a much better place for all once mankind finally grows up and grows out of the need to believe in fairy tales dieties, and can then find a way to live based on respect for humankind itself.
Without God, there is no reason to respect humankind.

Hey Folks!

The Discovery Channel will be airing a program (March 4, 9pm ET/PT) regarding a new archeological find in which the ossuaries of Jesus “and His family” were allegedly discovered.

Here’s the link to the article: dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/02/25/tomb_arc.html?category=archaeology&guid=20070225073000.

Then visit this site and listen to a press conference about it.
dsc.discovery.com/convergence/tomb/tomb.html?dcitc=w99-502-ah-1024.

What do you think? If the tombs of Jesus and the Holy Family were actually found, how would that affect your faith?

How would it affect our ability to defend the faith to those who are already weak in faith?

What defense of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension and Mary’s Assumption could be made in light of such a finding?

Joseph
