Mandatory mask poll

That depends very much on where you are.

In the fairly socially and politically conservative small city where I live, nearly everyone wears a mask. 200 miles away, in rural blue collar Trump country where my wife’s extended family lives, most people aren’t wearing masks.

40 miles from here, in a very urban, low income city, people are wearing masks even when they’re out walking by themselves.
I have to correct myself. A map published by the New York Times showed percent of mask wearing people by zip code. The Trumpians in my wife’s hometown are more likely to wear masks than the people in the low income urban area.

I think Trump is willing to play along with asking people to mask in order to beat the Dems at their own game. If everyone masks and if it saves lives, then no reason why people can’t stand, masked and socially distanced, at the voting polls and vote in November. No need to push for massive mail-in voting.

There are a lot of people around here who don’t wear masks, even though it’s a mandate. I would categorize most of them as just regular Janes and regular Joes, just going about their business, refusing to be pushed around.

I simply think we’re being lied to. Our limits are being tested to see how far they can push us. That is what I firmly believe.
@Ruthanne: President Trump has been at loggerheads with the CDC and Dr. Anthony Fauci for quite some time.

Just days ago, the President ordered hospitals not to submit data to the CDC. Instead, he wants it sent directly to the White House task force.

He’s now had a change of heart about masks. Why you think Trump changed his views about the masks and the seriousness of the disease? Is he now part of the systematic scientific deception?

As a New Jersey resident, I am the first to admit that the restrictions are tedious. Per capita, we remain the hardest hit state. When the infection was running wild, we were ordered to shelter in place except for essential errands: eg trips to the doctor, grocery stores, liquor stores, and drug stores. I complied. But to be candid, I went stir crazy.

According to the New Jersey Health Department, new cases have fallen from 4K a day to a few hundred.

Are scientists lying to us? I don’t see the motivation. I am grateful that New Jersey is reopening. Now at least parks, golf courses, and outdoor restaurants are open. We still have to wear masks. But I no longer feel under house arrest.

Here’s a personal note. My late mother, who was born in 1930, told me about polio quarantines that happened every summer. Knowing this history, I’m less suspicious of public health measures.

I’d love to hear your response.

Be advised there is a rather unique troll here giving likes under a profane username with a rather nutty and rambling profile.

Seems like a totally stable individual.

“Thou shalt not kill, (by spreading your breath to your neighbor when you well know that your exhalations may contain the coronavirus in the midst of this deadly pandemic).”
We face danger every day. For example, we get in our car and drive down the highway. We have to worry about speeders, drunk drivers etc. So what do we do? We take precautions. We wear our seatbelts. We buy cars with airbags. We drive defensively. We look out for ourselves.

Other people should do the same. It’s every man and woman for themselves.

We look out for ourselves.
I don’t think you understand the concept of a society.

We have reciprocal obligations to each other. Me looking out for myself and myself only actually puts me at more risk, because presumably then everyone does likewise. I’m much safer as an individual with an ethic that says we try to mitigate risk to each other.
We have to worry about speeders, drunk drivers etc
Yes, and we prohibit those behaviors and punish people who engage in them. We don’t just shrug and tell everyone to wear a seatbelt.

I’m just trying to understand the logic of this internet conspiracy fever dream.
It is about the government having control over the people, and like sheep we are mindlessly obeying. Just today (07/22/20) Washington DC announced that anyone caught in public without a mask would be subject to a $1000. It has gone from asking people to comply to insisting people to comply and now threatening those who don’t comply.

Wake up, People! You’re being played like a fiddle! You’re subjecting yourselves to government control and you’re too naive to even realize you are being controlled.

Who do you think “the government” is? You know we elect our leaders, right? You’re assuming the mandatory mask rules are being imposed by some external force on an unwilling populace with no (name removed by moderator)ut.

I live in dc. Most people here support mandatory mask laws. The law is an expression of the people’s will. If a governor imposed a mask rule in a state where it’s not popular, I guess they can vote him/her out.

Let’s get some things clear here – the Government forces you to wear seatbelts, buy auto insurance and stop at red lights. And they have been forcing you to do these things for our safety for decades.
I’m not sure that I would lump all three of these issues together. The red light stop rule seems reasonable, to being forced to wear a seatbelt wear less reasonable as the decision not to seems to carry consequences for the person deciding, the auto insurance requirements also I think, are more debatable.
