Wow, just jumping in at the end here…Homers, it is not guilt, defensiveness, self degradation, low self esteem, lack of self worth, no self respect, or any other label you can come up with that has caused me to go to a male gyno. I have been to both male and female doctors for all my healthcare needs. I do not care about the sex of the doctor any more than I care about the sex of my mechanic. If the person is professional and competent, then I will continue to seek his/her services. If not, I will look elsewhere. My current male doctor is by far the most sensitive, efficient, effective, caring, professional, personable, responsible, and competent gyno I have ever been to. My husband is concerned only for my health and couldn’t give a rip about the sex of my doctor.

You say you aren’t judging others, but by saying something to the effect of a female who goes to a male doctor is not self-respecting, you are giving that impression. In electronic communication, much is lost by not being able to read each other’s body language or being able to hear the tone and inflection of the other person’s views. Perhaps a rewording of your position is what is needed.

A chance of a woman exposing herself to a male doctor to possibly be violated.

Rhetorical, perhaps…
Well, there is really no ‘chance’ about it. When you have an annual exam, a woman ***is *** ‘exposing’ herself. Doctors, 99.9% of the time, are not alone, and are examining women with nurses alongside them…I’m not seeing where all these violations are occuring. Maybe 30 years ago, but no longer. Largely, nurses being required to be in the room with female or male doctors, is for that very reason.

I think it would be better if you just admitted that you have issues with this, because you just don’t want male doctors to see your wife naked, because you believe that her body is yours alone to see. That is fine. But, dancing around the real issue, makes for a bad defense of things. You’re not insecure if you feel this way, by the way…many men feel the exact same way.

What have YOU done for your marriage today?

Whatevergirl, I hope you don’t mind me using your prompt, “what have you done for your marriage today.”

-Wouldn’t all of you ladies like to be able to say to all of your husbands, because I love you so much, and value our honor and intimacy of the marriage, I chose to protect our intimacy as much as possible.

Do you realize how powerful, and how much love, devotion, and honor this shows. Just a thought…
Yeah not powerful at all when you husband thinks views like this are absurd and a risk to his wife’s health.

To each their own. It sounds like your marriage is paying the price…

How can you possibly make a JUDGEMENT about my marriage from my post? Anyone? Anyone?

Whatevergirl…It seems that you perhaps need to go back and review this entire thread. I would say the percentage you quoted about doctors having an assistant present is greatly over exherted. It’s probably more like 75/25. Plus, there’s the exposure issue, of a woman having to expose herself to another male (other than her husband). Additionally, the med assistant usually is not viewing the exam from the footend of the table, and isn’t usually timing the exam.

I’m glad you said this, Homers. We are getting somewhere with you, now. We’re getting to the heart of the matter.

Homers…there’s NOTHING wrong with you coming out and asking your wife to NOT see a male ob/gyn. It doesn’t mean you are insecure, etc…(it’s not intimacy though, to go to the doctor, but we’re getting there lol)

So that being said…if this is what you and your wife agree on, that is great. It doesn’t mean other women don’t love their spouses, if they see a male ob/gyn. Now, that’s just silly to even think something like that. My dh never minded me seeing a male doctor, he viewed it as a professional thing. Your view of your wife seeing a male doctor is somehow a break in the intimacy bond between the two of you. That is the difference between your thoughts, and others thoughts about it here. I really don’t think any woman would see a male ob/gyn because they disrespect the intimate bond with their husbands. They just don’t view it as intimate–because it isn’t.:o

We are not trying to convince you to change your mind about your wife seeing male doctors…but we are hopeful that you’ll see that your view of doctors’ visits needs to be tweaked…it’s not about intimacy. And women who see male physicians are not trying to tempt other men, or fate, or ‘create’ intimacy with them.

“How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye?”

Hows that beam doing in your marriage?

Homers, I replied below…

Pretty HIGH I would think!
Real numbers, its really time for you to put up or shut up on the actual number of assaults that happen. Your opinion on what you think the number is based on your own distorted view of what is sexual holds no water.

Edit: Dr. McSteamy’s distorted view on whats sexual doens’t count either.

Homers–I noticed that you are Baptist. I only know a little on the surface about your religion. Is it unacceptable in your faith, for a woman to see a male ob/gyn? I’m wondering if that has something to do with it all, too.

I know that Baptists disapprove of gambling and drinking, etc…so there are some significant differences in how we view every day life occurences, between Catholics and Baptists. Just wondering if this could be one of them.(and thus, your strong aversion to your wife ‘exposing’ herself, to another male doctor)

Thank you for this kind and articulate response. And for the record, I do not associate intimacy with doctor visits, which is to say that I don’t expect for something to occur, while my wife is at the doctors office, but that I prefer to try to avoid the “chance” of something occuring. I realize that yearly check-ups are important for women, and that the perception of intimacy for the marriage is also important. Hopefully, there is a common-ground between both of these desires.

Whatevergirl–not all Baptists believe the same things (whether dancing, drinking, etc are acceptable). I’m not familiar with the particulars, but know there are numerous Baptist denominations. Without knowing which denomination Homers is a part of, it is not possible to guess his religious guidance.

Homers–you infer here something different though:

You seem to view that if your wife were to go see a male ob/gyn, that she would be dishonoring the intimacy between the two of you, and I ask…how so? How does not seeing a male physician edify one’s marriage?

Yes, I’m just guessing. lol

Didn’t mean to be condescending, I just didn’t want you to be accused of stereotyping or anything else!
