I’m sorry but I have to respectfully disagree with that. And I say that with the greatest regret.
I guarantee you Trump will not win. Same for Cain. The first one has even less experince than Obama and is known primarily for being a philandering spouse to his first wife, head of a bad reality tv show and overall a controversial, egomaniacal, filthy rich jerk.
Cain is just an unknown businessman with no charisma and a midly insteresting name. Other of the candidates are like that.
Bachmann MAY have a chance------if she plays her cards right. But forget about some of the others. I don’t care how bad Barry has been and is. Trump and others (including Cain) are unelectable,. 👍
Trump is looking for publicity-he wont run-if he did hed get stopmed. The last NY RINO who ran didnt win one primary(Gulliani). I beleive that any Republican who is strong enough to win the primaries should beat Obama handily. I dont hink that will be Cain or Bachman or Palin.

The field is looking to be between Romney, Pawlenty, Gingrich, Huckabee, and Ron Paul, unless some dark horse emerges and runs with it. I don’t think Christy will get in, nor Haley Barbour.

I’d personally like to see either Ron Paul. I think Gingrich is a smart, effective leader, but apparently you cannot be a repentent sinner and a Republican. You can have all the adulterous or gay affairs you want as a Democrat and everyone will still love you.

Gingrich didn’t just have a woman on the side. His treatment of his first wife, his draft dodging, and some financial scandal contributes to the low estimate many have of him, I think.

Republicans can only wish that they had the same teflon coating that Democratic politicians often have. 👍

Gingrich is the most qualified person in the US to be President-but I agree he has too much baggage to get elected. And there is a lesson in there for all of us. Even when we repent and are forgiven our sins still effect us.

I dnt recall him raping anyone, however.

I don’t think Paul is a credible candidate, and I would add Daniels (if he decides to run). Beyond that I think your list is probably about right. I think Gingrich and Huckabee have mirror-image problems - Gingrich will not appeal to the evangelical base and Huckabee’s support is thin outside of that same group. The longer it goes without someone else stepping up, the better Romney’s chances. I know a lot of the base is wary of Romney, but the GOP has a history of holding its nose and voting for the guy whose ‘turn’ it is. That failed with Dole, but worked with Bush. Personally, I don’t think Romney can beat Obama, but Daniels or Pawlenty might.

Are you saying that the temporal effect of sin remains, even when the eternal effect of sin is removed? How do we get rid of this temporal effect of sin? How is it purged from us?

Purgatory, I think.
I think that repentence and seeking the forgiveness of others also helps in this life. But the problem is that forgiveness is hard, but restoring lost trust is even harder. Newt tried to justify his past indiscretions by saying his passion for American made him work too hard, which led him into sin. He should have just owned up to the sin and left out the attempt to justify it. After all, won’t being President cause him to work equally hard? I think a lot of people in the so-called “religous right” are willing to forgive him, but are not sure they can trust him.

The damage that was done to his reputation will take years to heal and will never heal for those who disagree with his politics.

Republicans do not wish that their candidates have the same Teflon coating that Democratic politicians do, that is because Republicans believe that moral character counts and do not so quickly dismiss the moral shortcomings of politicians just because they agree with them on the other issues.

I find Gingrich’s serial adultery to be quite troubling. To his credit he has publicly repented and my Church has not only forgiven him but has publicly declared that ,contrary to what many say in this thread ,he has not been married three times, he has only been married once- at least from a sacramental standpoint. I don’t expect non-Catholics too much put much stock in this but am very surprised and disappointed that many Catholics do not acknowledge this. It is even more troubling that the Catholis who do not acknowledge this appear to do so for base political reasons.

I give great credence to the fact that he has done this public repentance and that the Church has annulled his two previous marriages and thus would be more likely to vote for him than I would a candidate in a similar situation who had not acknowledge the wrong they did and not attempted to rectify it.

I agree -his blaming his past sins on his passion for America does disappoint me. But I think we all have to acknowledge that he is on the right path. There was no political advantage for him to become a Catholic and seek annulment of his previous two marriages. He has come a long way but he needs to realize that his past sins, as with all of us, were the result of his shortcomings and not the fault of any zeal for his country or any other excuse he might come up with.

I like the way the Chris Wallace confronted him on this last Sunday. He looked at im rich and said that “you had years to think about this and this is the best you can come up with?”

Perfect example … and just ONE example … of how the House of Representatives can cut spending in a meaningful way AND at the same time satisfy the demands of the voters … cut that $105 Billion, RIGHT NOW. IMMEDIATELY.

NO JOBS LOST.

NO WELFARE RECIPIENTS DEMANDING THEIR ENTITLEMENTS.

Get rid of two things at one time … the $105 BILLION in spending and stick a fork in Socialized onesizefitsall government takeover of the health care and medical sectors of the country.

Sooooo easy. Nice find, Michele.

AND … cut the $105 BILLION today … not in September.

I’ll bite. Bachmann is a prodigious fund raiser and good at whipping up the base. She is also completely unelectable - in part because of her insistence on touting mythical problems like the “105 billion secret dollars” garbage. The GOP is trying to use her for the first two qualities, without having to actually put her in any kind of real leadership position. They hope to cash in on the celebrity without getting tarred with the crazy. That will be increasingly difficult to accomplish.

Interesting. So how do those three interact, her fund raising ability, her appeal to the base and her penchant for myths? Are they three separate aspects of her public persona or do they work together?

IMO, they work together. The GOP leadership understands this and wants to use Bachmann and others like her as useful tools to raising cash and turning out the vote. But most of the so-called leadership do not buy into the mythology so they have to walk a fine line that takes advantage of the myths without either adopting them or denying them. See, for example, Huck’s bizarre triangulation on birther issues. I think the better course is the one laid out by Pawlenty and a few others - simply come out and say you don’t buy into the crazy. That will make him a better candidate in Nov, assuming he can get there.

In other words, it’s easier to exploit gullibility than to promote rational debate, but ultimately the aim is to get a candidate who doesn’t believe the spin that’s got many of his supporters in a tizzy?!
