I agree with this. I grew up in the Ozarks, among Fundamentalists and deep woods kids who were pretty rough around the edges. The only interest I had in sports when I was in high school was that the girls attended the games and it presented an extrarodinarily good opportunity to pick one up. I never played a single sport. Never, ever was I accused of being homosexual.

Now, I do remember one guy who was pretty well considered a homosexual and one girl who was pretty well believed to be a lesbian, and for very very good reason. Never did anybody give either of them a rough time at all. But neither did either of them impose their sexuality on anybody else, by word or deed.

I think a lot of this “back in the bad old days” talk is entirely overblown if not fabricated.
Yes, I think so. In my high school, homosexuality was entirely off our radar. The word “gay” had not been invented. I only knew one boy in the school who struck me as effeminate enough to possibly be homosexual. But he wasn’t. By the time I met him again at a reunion he was on his third wife.

In fact, there was very little bullying whatsoever. Everybody pretty much went about their business. There were cliques, but that’s about it.

I agree. At least in my experience. I was in high school in the mid 90’s in the deep south and there were 2 out gay boys that I knew about. They didn’t hide it, sat with the girls at lunch, and were actually well liked. I don’t recall anyone being mean to them, and like i said, both were quite popular.

You know who got picked on? The poor obese girls or the very, very poor boy who wore second-hand clothes or the introvert. They were abused, but try to get Hollywood to care about those poor souls.

I think that’s what annoys me the most about the anti-homophobia campaign. They act as if only gay teens suffer from bullying. Kids get picked on for a million reasons.

Also, quit comparing homosexual rights to the plight of African Americans. Blacks in this country were enslaved for 400 years, denied basic human dignity and abused in unimaginable ways. Blacks were hanged and beaten to death for any reason during the Jim Crow era…which didn’t officially end until 1965!

Gays on the other hand could not be murdered by law. They could be fined or do minor jail time but gays were not lynched like Blacks. Gays, as long as they were white, could rise to the top of society. James Buchanan, Walt Whitman, Truman Capote etc…all became successful despite their homosexuality being an open secret. Andrew Jackson would call Buchanan and his live-in male companion “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy” both archaic terms for effeminate men.

Were some gays abused? Without a doubt. But, far, far less than Blacks, Native Americans, Chinese etc…I think, and this may anger some, but in some ways the gay rights movement is largely based on giving white Americans a way to feel like victims of oppression.

Yeah, the Leftists want to change history too. Well, it’s too late for that now. Way too late. We need everything they fought so hard to tear down: real relationships and real dating, lifelong marriage, divorce with cause, no abortion, strong communities with common ties even if we all don’t go to the same Church or come from the same ethnic background. It would wound them terribly if more people stopped contracepting.

In the 1960s, our government reminded us about our Judeo-Christian Heritage. We have In God We Trust on our coins. The Left hates all that with a passion.

Every time Dan Savage say, says something negative about a politician, can be very negative as he did about Sarah Palin about 3 weeks ago, I don’t all of a sudden associate such a vile statement with all gays.

Let’s remember too, what we are talking about is “redefining” marriage and that’s been done in parts of Europe and the Americas, the Russians interestingly voted unanimous with one abstention to uphold the concept of what we define marriage as.

The only part that would likely be unconstitutional is the ban on “gay” “pride” parades. We have lots of laws in the US that limit speech, solicitation and propaganda, especially when it comes to children. And as for “press” what is published in the US as “gay” rights publications, would have been banned as obscene just a few decades ago. It’s not that it suddenly got protected by the Constitution but that public morality standards fell.

I don’t know. It sounds like the article the original poster highlighted would run afowl of this law since it talks about the gay and lesbian community and is freely available to children on the Internet. You are for that kind of censorship?

“what we define marriage as” is common sense biology. It is deeply rooted in human communities as normative. Gay so-called marriage is not the same nor can it be properly compared to heterosexual marriage.

It is strange that what was once the greatest menace to the West, the Soviet Union, disintegrated, and while still a threat, is no longer called the “Evil Empire” as President Ronald Reagan said. It is also strange that the most billionaires in the world are found in Moscow, seat of the Anti-Capitalists.

Yes, the type of internet soliciation that is condoned by homosexual activists should be censored in the same way that heterosexual solicitation of children is censored.

Are you from Russia? Did you even look at the bolded statistics I just posted? See that 1 in 20 Russians believe homosexuals should be exterminated?
Well, to be “fair” I would imagine 1 in 20 Americans would desire that homosexuals be liquidated.

There is a lot of diversity in a group of 20 people.

I wonder about this quite a bit. It’s one thing to “talk big” about somebody who you find offensive, but quite another to actually kill someone. I very much doubt 1/20th of Americans or Russians, either one, would favor actually killing homosexuals.

Ironically, though, while from the posts so far it appears there really wasn’t a lot of aggressiveness toward homosexuals in the “bad old days” liberals love to hate, some people do become aggressive when they think someone is being aggressive toward them or particularly toward their children. It’s possible the homosexual movement is making a big mistake with all the “in your face” promotion of homosexuality, and especially among children.

Dan Savage may be America’s most prominent Gay activist, he has wished death on certain people of the population, so using the faulty logic of some, we should then imagine solid percentages from certain groups believe this as well.

.
This could very well be true.

I wish we had that kind of moral leadership in the USA. The USA and Russia seem to have traded places. Could this be a sign of the promise of Our Lady of Fatima?

“Our Lady fulfills her promise, asking ‘for the consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart, promising its conversion through this means and the hindering of the propagation of its errors.’” - Source

EXACTLY!! And this is one of many reasons I don’t buy into the homosexual activists’ claims. Any movement that relies on deceit is not one I will ever support.

What you describe is just what I experienced in high school and college throughout the 80s. The short fat boy with no friends made a public announcement in the school newspaper that he was bisexual. It was evident he thought he could raise his cool factor that way. I clearly remember even in high school in the early 80s, those who were gay were not being bullied. They were considered a little more cool. It was even more true in college in the late 80s.

Kids are not bullied for being gay. They’re bullied for being perceived as weak, easy targets.

Another major difference: ‘black’ is a physical characteristic that has nothing to do with character or behavior. ‘Gay’ generally has just about everything to do with behavior–a behavior which is addressed and condemned by every major world religion.

I like it. …This kind of of bills were passed in some counties of Africa as well.

While I commend the integrity of those in the Duma and the better qualities of the bill, from what the article says, it does some rather extreme and some of it downright nasty (e.g. forced medical procedures!).

I can definitely understand Russia’s fear of “Western liberalism” - it’s the same fear many Muslims have too - since such “liberalism” seems to equate to pornography, licentiousness, promotion of same-sex anything, drug-taking, breakdown of marriages…the list goes on. And again, I commend their stance against it, but we all need to be careful not to go to the opposite extreme and begin harassing people unjustly.

I think the word “fear” is misapplied here. The operative word would be “rejection.” As someone who has taught in schools with significant Muslim populations, I will tell you that they categorically reject what is apparent in the Western World, namely
pornography, licentiousness, promotion of same-sex anything, drug-taking, breakdown of marriages…the list goes on.
They see accurately, they don’t “fear,” the cultural factors which promote any and all of the above.

Fair point. I guess I meant fear of how it could affect their culture and people, which is certainly something to be afraid of (rather than any irrational fear).

Then why did you say this?
Because only crazy people would even state that they would desire the “liquidation” of a group of people.

Would they actually “follow through” if given the chance- hard to say.

Still to even hold that idea makes someone a bit unhinged and frightening in my book.
