For those who still remain unaware of the role Wall Street played in bringing about the financial mess we are in right now, I recommend reading…
The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report
Here is a summary of the findings by Wikipedia: The Commission reported its findings in January 2011. It concluded that "the crisis was avoidable and was caused by: Widespread failures in financial regulation, including the Federal Reserve’s failure to stem the tide of toxic mortgages ** [which had been Very Strongly Encouraged to make those mortgages]; ** Dramatic breakdowns in corporate governance including too many financial firms acting recklessly and taking on too much risk; An explosive mix of excessive borrowing and risk
by households and Wall Street that put the financial system on a collision course with crisis; Key policy makers ill prepared for the crisis,
lacking a full understanding of the financial system they oversaw; and systemic breaches in accountability and ethics
at all levels.“[4][5]
They don’t mention the fact that the “toxic mortgages” were taken out by individuals, some of whom committed fraud to get them. they don’t mention Fannie and Freddie, two quasi-governmental operations set up to facilitate the mortgage-selling business and thus increase the amount of money available for mortgages.
So, yeah, greedy people on Wall Street were sucked into this whole thing, bit that would not have happened without the greed of a lot of other people, people who were just as greedy, who overextended themselves on credit cards and mortgages.
So why focus the protests on Wall Street? Who’s protesting Main Street, Fannie, and Freddi?
And where the heck were all the brilliant economists who should have seen that the housing bubble was just a function of demographics and would come to an end as soon as the Boomers started retiring and moving to the second homes they bought for their retirement?
